header to engine gasket

Which way do you put this in, Hub, flat side to motor or beveled side to motor?

SM says

??Install the gaskets so that their chamfer sides [C] face the
front.

Sounded to me like they were suggesting the bevel to face the header and the flat to face the outlet on the motor.

When I removed the old gaskets, it seemed as though some had originally been installed flat to motor and some bevel to motor.

^^That's what I thought -- after I had already tightened down the nuts. Oh weel, there's always next time. i suppose they will seal okay.

Thanks

Thanks, Hub. That would have been my next question - How to detect a leak? Thought i might feel it with my hand but didn't know I would hear it.

Another case of getting the copper header (exhaust) gaskets mixed up with the muffler gaskets.
My factory manual says nothing about the copper (header to motor) header gaskets. It does mention the chamfered muffler gaskets (underneath) needing to go in a particular direction.

P 5-36 in the SM is not written clearly where header installation is described. It appears that they may have just copied the nstuctions from muffler body installation and this is not the same part. I don't know what they were trying to say. Japanese to English translation problems.

OK. I'm not trying to police anyone. See smiley?
Only time I see the word chamfered is when they talk about the muffler gaskets. Sometimes terminology gets mixed up and mistakes are made when discussing parts that are "related".
Like at my other thread about the manifold gaskets, torque specs are given for the wrong part. Muffler bracket to frame bolts are 25 ft/lb, not the manifold holder nuts (13 ft/lb). Maybe the so called "safety factor" is enough to get you off the hook but if you tighten the manifold holder nuts to 25 you may snap something or at least over stress the part.
I know some people do a search and may go with the first thing they read (not smart) so I feel I should help if I know the answer.

Well, I just had another thought to add to what you just said. I didn't go look on the 14 but like my older bike some bolts have a number on their head that refers to strength and torquing. It's not just bolt head/thread size. Some smaller bolts can have a higher torque rating than a larger bolt 'cuz they're a "stronger" bolt. I have several of these kinds of bolts on my GS. Like the shifter, bar clamps, fork clamps, etc. Some have a 4, 7, or 8 on them. 8 being a bolt that takes a higher torque than many other bolts the same size or even larger.

The SM gives "Basic Torque for General Fasteners" on p 2-11. I wouldn't consider header nuts to be general fasteners. I'm not able to find any specific torque spec for header nuts in the SM except p 5-36. They seem to be using incorrect terms for the part involved so who knows if the torque specs are correct in that passage.
