12v Power outlet
06/06/12 8:30 PM

I was searching for a good place to mount a bracket to hold the 12v power outlet for my GPS or phone charger. Its a water proof marine outlet and has a bright green LED inside of it to show it has power. I found it on Ebay less than 10 bucks. I have seen a few place`s where members added theirs. I finally decided to make a bracket to fit under the handle bars left or right side. I made both brackets but only used the left one so far and it works great. Very strong and out of the way but very easy access to it. I made it from 1/4" 7075 aluminum, painted it black, and purchased 4 longer metric SS bolts to replace the stock handle bar bolts. It is wired to the horn as "HUB" suggested to another member to find power easily without splicing into a harness. Thanks Hub! Nice clean install, incredibly strong, and looks great. And as we all know....

Classy-looking bracket fab. I have a dual-outlet plug with 2 USB charging ports attached to the underside of the upper fairing where the windscreen attaches. It's a little big to locate where yours is, but I ran 2 wires (one fused) all the way to the battery with an LED-lighted switch on the right Foremans. One side powers the radar detector and the other contains a small re3chargeable flashlight. I can charge the cell and/or the Ipod off the USBs.

It took a little bit of thinking I`m should you know everything is so tight. I only needed one power plug for now but who knows whats next... and I have the right side ready to install. The curve in the bracket follows the radius of the fork tube, and not that I would but you could pick the bike off the ground with these brackets, they are that strong! I was thinking install the right side one and put a USB outlet in that one with a micro on/off switch maybe this winter.

I did mine on the front fairing stay with a little velcro and some zip ties and ran new power wires from the battery all the way up front (PITA though). From the top you can't even see it. That looks awesome though, really great job. Did you just run a longer bolt through the clip on spot?

Here is mine

I did use longer bolts and had to raidius the bracket around the fork tube. The whole set-up ran about $35.00
if anyone wants or needs 12V power shoot me an email.

Always nice to see a quality bracket BLACKZX14
Nice installation BEARSZX72. Great location choice.

Has anyone seen the custom power sockets that BMW uses? They are much smaller than conventional cigarette type sockets and way better in terms of an electrical connection. You can buy the socket and ends separately if you want to make a custom harness. You can even buy cords made up to support the socket to your device.

For a sense of scale and to see various mounting arrangements and types check out This Link

One consideration when mounting any socket is water. When they are not in use the lid/flap does a reasonable job keeping water out. But when in use with something plugged in they offer poor water resistance. Make sure your socket has a drain hole to let out any water that may find its way in. Another trick is to create a small boot on the end that plugs into the socket, creating a hood. Horizontal is always the safest bet.

Cut out the middle man.

I have the BMW style plug on my ZZR12 and consider it a pain in the ass.
Yes it's a fail proof connection and for heated gear it's the only way to go.
Everything else requires an adapter cord, extra expense, stuff to keep track of riding.
After that,I installed the plain old cigar style socket on my 14R,most stuff has the same style charger meant for a car.
Works great, fits tight, doesn't rattle loose and kill the connection like the cheap stuff and no hassles with adapters.
Yes the clearance is close at full lock but it doesn't touch and that's all you need, just enough, lol.

Sorry to revive an old thread... but this is a sweet accessory setup! I want one bracket on the left for usb outlets and one on the right for Powerpole outlets.

Chrly, would your friend be willing to cut out a couple more brackets? If you think they might be interested in the work, can you pm me their contact info?

Awesome! Thanks, chrly! I'm not worried about the delay, hope your friend gets better soon, and can handle sourcing the replacement bolts. I already have the outlets from my earlier post; per their product descriptions, they both fit a "standard 1-1/8" diameter hole." Feel free to pm me with a total for the brackets and shipping; I can mail a check or send the funds through Paypal, whatever you or your friend prefer.

Thanks again!

It`s Ok chrly I been real busy. If your friend has the time by all means have him do it. I havent been on here in a while and barely rode my bike last year. If for some reason your friend ends up not making them let me know and I will make the time to get them done. MCycleRider I got your email and failed to respond I was working 7days 12hrs with 1hr plus each way driving. Finished that job and back to almost normal. Let me know.

Mike
