RE: Thinkin' about painting my engine covers

I guess so! We have a good amount of gold happening on the bike too though (hey, I just noticed that preload reservoir is situated at the same angle as the forks--cool!). Just missed a set of gold Vortex rearsets for 175 bucks. Will do the fork bottoms gold and the axle adjusters. I think about getting gold levers and grips but everything else blue stays blue. And the orange stays orange. Decisions, decisions...

LOL "going Hub!" I wish! No, I just plan to run the bike for a few weeks with the fairings off to hopefully cure the paint. The first engine covers were done two years ago and I think they might be still collecting road debris. I know it happens even on the OEM engine paint but orange really shows it much more. Might end up being an ongoing maintenance job. I plan to remove the fairing pads too. That should help.

BTW, that grey on the clutch cover--that was a custom mix using a can of grey VHT Flame Proof in one hand and Duplicolor met black in the other with a few flashes of VHT anodized blue. I don't think it needed the blue at all. Pretty close though. I can live with it until the next time I paint the cover.
Also, if you're at all handy with a brush, a nice soft squirrel or an artist quality nylon filament bristle brush would be the way to go on this. Tape can be a problem and the edges painted on three dimensional surfaces would be smoother and placed better with a brush too.

Good job on painting, Rook, looks professional. Do you think the plasti-dip will hold up on the hot rubber hoses? Is there a medical term for those of us, me included, that can't keep hands off their bike? I'm in process of redoing my front fairing, now with a single round l.e.d headlight.

Thanks, Nova. The dip treatment on the hoses is a cheap way to get the Samco look but it's not permanent. The color has not changed much and the dip has held up well everywhere except where the large V shaped pipe runs close to the header. Looks like the top coat has either melted away or lost it's color because I am seeing the white undercoat of dip showing through in that area. The dipped hoses accumulate some debris and they fuse together where they touch one another on the LH side. They also stick to the fairing pads and accumulate debris in those areas. I think a piece of color matched vinyl applied in those areas would alleviate these problems. I plan to get a set of Samcos someday but PlastiDpip is an ok temporary option. I wouldn't take the hoses off just to dip them but if you're doing a coolant flush, might as well try Dipping if you don't want to drop $300 on Samcos. I think a set of new OEM water pipes would be at least as much as Samcos.
