dry injectors - ok?

I remember you telling me that the fuel pump blade can go bad from sitting without being immersed in gas. I'm sure I also heard that it is not too good to let your injectors sit without fuel in them. Well, I ran the tank dry warming the bike up for it's last oil change of the season. The oil is changed and now I plan to get a jug of gas to fill the tank for storage. Do I need to start the 14 up to wet the injectors or will it be sufficient to just turn the motor on the starter a few times without letting it fire? Any gas that is left in the bike had fuel stabilizer added. I would not be concerned about untreated gas in the system as much as no gas in the injectors since what was left of the last tank (which I had added Seafoam to) ran dry.

Thanks, Hub.

I was trying to avoid having to start the engine with the fresh oil in there. I don't think running it a few minutes is going to hurt much though.

6. If you want to add protection to the cylinder wall, coat the rings with oil as a sealer from any atmospheric air crystallizing the metal parts....Once the fuel/mix runs through the injectors, you then shoot oil down the intake ports, crank the engine a few revolutions for each intake stroke to follow through and stop.

What do you think about just dropping a spoonful of oil into each spark plug hole and cranking instead of the intake ports?

With key off, you can hand ratchet open the flies, zip-tie the throttle grip open; take an oil can with a long straight tube out of the can's squirt head, go down that port with the tip and oil that valve up, you can be as sloppy as you like.

I admired the elegance of your approach as soon as I read it. You will have a teaspoon of oil to squeeze through your injector holes on each cylinder though. That kind of freaks me out because it's supposed to be air and gas going through there. On the other hand, I definitely saw oil on the underside of my flies when I removed them and the primaries had a gloss of oil on them too.

I suppose dropping a spoonful of oil down there would be about the same thing and the tank is off anyway (I was doing some wire routing under the tank and that's why I let the tank run so low that it went dry).

I'll be removing plugs soon so I may go with the direct into the cylinder method this time. I'll keep the intake idea in mind for the future though. I'm glad this all came up. I hadn't considered the fact that our spark plugs are way down in the bottom of a well. The hose squirt is a good tip for this go-around.

Me:

Wait a minute-- The valves under the fly flappers go directly into the cylinders just as the spark plug holes do? The valves do not feed air to the injectors, only fuel sprays from the injectors?

If so, no need to worry about oil squirting through injectors. Pouring oil in through the intake ports is the same thing as the spark plug holes -- except you need to turn the engine by hand to get the valves to open and suck the oil in.

Am I right or wrong here, Hub?

Oh-- Well, GREAT! What am i all worried about - oil oozing through my injectors. Now I will have to get my handy, dandy siphon bulb out and empty the fuel tank again so I can go in there and oil up the cylinders. I won't be dashing through the snow but OH what fun it is to oil the cylinders in you fourtee-EEEEEEEN!

So, Hub, you think I can turn the rear wheel by hand while the bike is in 6th gear and up on the rear stand or will i have to roll it across the garage to turn the motor?

^Thanks Hub. Counting on an early Spring this year. I may just try to oil those babies up for fun though.
