Sproket change
10/02/11 9:04 PM

What is the big difference when people change the sprokets on the front and back? i understand it offers something different but what does it offer? i've heard more torque or a higher top end speed. What is the best set up?

Stock is pretty darn good. Some here have changes they like and may post.

I went down one tooth to a 16 on the front recently, and I may go back to stock. Not sure. My average mpg went down, of course.

What you want is 2 down on the back, leave the front alone.
Front gives you grunt. Speeds away faster. You want to find 7th gear seeing you are in 6th, right, Priv?
If you went 2 down on the back, 6th is now too high a gear. 5th is now running all day long around town. 6th is for packing up and heading out on route 80 up north or route 10, down south. Coast to coast you pass more gas stations in route.

agree------17 front/42 rear

You go up in back and down in front for more accelleration. It is like "lowereing" all your gears a notch. Going down a few teeth in back and/or up a tooth in front will make your gears higher---less acelleration but potentially faster top speed.

I switched to a lightweight front but did not stray from 17 T. Many people complain that anything smaller than 17 T will cause a whine noise. My rear is 45 T. Packs more of a wallop but still very controllable even cornering high rpm. I ride about 500 rpm higher on the highway to maintain the same speed I would with stock gearing. Personally, I think it is worth while to experiment with gearing but to go with shorter gearing like I have, all you really need to do is downshift a gear with the stock gearing. Same effect. Of course, you will never get the kind of power in first gear that shorter gearing offers.

It is cheap. No hp increase. change is due to leverage change between the sprockets. Not really necessary ASFAIC but fun to experiment with.

That will always depend on the rider. Touring stay stock or go down in ratio #s, Drag Racer, 16/43 or 17/45 will get you there much quicker. Eats back tires and wheelies at will. Lots of fun. Play with it. Lots here on the Forum to read on that one.

Thank you to everyone for info. I'll have to play with it in the next couple of months. then after i've done all that then i might just keep it at whatever i've got it at or i'll just go back to stock. But thanks again for the help fellas.

Just about any aftermarket will save you some rotating mass compared to Stock engine sprocket. They are all steel but they are a lot less bulky than OEM. no big chunky hockey puck vibe dampener.

An aluminum rear will save you some rotating weight even if you go up in teeth but that will ware out way faster than steel.

Supersprocks has steel teeth w aluminum sprocket. Supposed to be nice.

I like after market sprockets. Super sprocks front. Vortex rear. About as light as can be and looks sharp too.

Personally I would be afraid of knocking a window in the back of my motor with the 520. I did that back in the 80's on my FJ1100 (with the regular chain no less). Are there any 520's with 11K tensile strength out there? EK's 520 does 8,500 and they are usually the leaders in tensile strength or close to it.

+1 seno 14 has too much torque for a 520 id be suprised if they even make a 520 for the 14

I stayed with stock pitch for resons the others are mentioning. Thought about going to 525 pitch (I think that was it, matybe it was 520?) Some people felt it was safe because liter bikes had that pitch and they are now making more hp than a 14. They don't make the kind of torque we have though. The lighter pitch will save a significant weight on the chain and the sprockets but if you sport ride or drag/road race, not safe IMHO. Maybe a worth while mod for someone who does LSR and does not require max acceleration.

You will save weight by going to aluminum rear and chrom/moly engine sprocket. EK ZZZ 530 pitch chain is a beffy lookin' thing but still slightly lighter than stock. I would be very curious to know what a lighter DID chain weighs.
