Thunderhill Raceway 7/25
06/30/15 8:40 PM

Finally going to attend my 1st track day. Thunderhill 3 mile East track. Heard the east side is great for big bikes. I can't wait, should be a blast.

Woo,

Just an offer if you're interested, PM me and I'll send you my track suspension settings and tire pressures - TS stuff but you have a need to know.

Your going to love the bike on the track, just run the first few session in T1 before you unleash the beast!

Geez Woo, you really know how to annoy a guy. I've been wanting to track my 14 there for a couple of years now. I used to race there before I retired.
Tips: Like Cruderudy said, get used to turn 1 before you blast the straight. You do NOT want to go off there.
Turn 3 ,a right hander, goes a bit off camber, be aware.
Do not turn in early for the Cyclone, you will end up running off the track.
Have fun doing wheelies over the back side hill!!!! Wheeeee!
It's going to be hot so bring shade and liquids.

HAVE FUN YA BASTARD!!!!

I'm definitely not going to unleash her on the straight away. I been got my need for high speed out of me. I really wanted to do the west side. It's much tighter. Want to get faster in tighter turns.
I am intimidated by that up hill turn that drops down to the right.
I never turn traction control off on the street. I plan on riding with it off later in the day though. Really want to learn and trust in my bike. Plus get some good teaching so I can gain some confidence.

Wheelies...wtf I never have got the front off 1 inch. I'm such a wuss.

The Cyclone on a ZX-14R... that'll make for some pucker.

Have fun out there, brother!

The turn you're worried about is the Cyclone. Just give yourself a couple of laps to look it over. You need to learn where to turn in because it's a blind entry. The only corner I had problems with was turn 3, which is a right hander. it has a bit of off camber and I never felt comfy through there. But plenty if guys railed by me so I know it was a mental thing. As you exit the left leading up over the back hill just keep the gas on and I bet you'll float the front without even trying. I was getting wheelies there on my TZR250 back in the day.
Anyhoo, the main thing is to have fun. Ride only as fast as you want, it ain't a race.

Whoo hoo!

My buddy almost high sided twice this weekend on turn 3. I will definitely be watching for that turn. The cyclone looks insane. Watched so many videos. I will be the one Damn near at a stop when cresting the peak.

But I plan on riding slow and smooth. Just want to have a fun day.

So this Saturday Track Day was the best time ever on 2 wheels. Started off in C group. First 2 sessions were frustrating. 3 red flags and a black flag. The guys were running off at every corner. So i spent my time learning my turn in points and getting my suspension dialed in. By the 3rd session I was comfortable with the bike and track. That's when my peg feelers kept grinding on turns 2 and 3. Kept working on my body position to minimize this. Session 4 I turned it up. Decided to play chase with my coaches. Apparently I was leaving black marks exiting all the corners. Thank goodness for traction control 1. Allowed my rear to step out just enough but not to break loose. Then by session 5 I got bumped to B group. That's when the true fun began. So much faster and way more predictable. Wasn't being cut off. I was doing the passing before now I'm getting passed. Lol took a second to get used to that. Fatigue caught me on the last session. Cut back to early on turn 5 and ended up cutting the corner through the dirt downhill. Kept her up right. Did 1 more lap and called it a day.

Got known around the track for the guy holding his own on the big bike. Guess it's rare to see any at the track. There was a busa in A group and this guy was backing it in the corners. Mind blowing.

So here is a video of my 2nd session. Was still timid with passing and predicting what riders where going to do. Enjoy!

Maddevill I hate right handers but turn 3 was fun to pass on the outside. Bike felt glued. Coming out of 5 is where I had no confidence. Only part on the track I couldn't get the suspension dialed it. Didn't want to give it to much gas until the suspension settled heading into 6.

Good job, man. These bikes are hard to ride at track pace, but with a little set up and a very firm hand, they will hang pretty well. Keep it up!

Trailboss, the bike wasn't to hard to ride at speed, but tires/body position and balls kept my speed in check. Bt016 were a little slippery when hot.

Dude... BT016s suck for a bike with that much power and weight. They'll work, but as you progress they may end up costing you some plastics.

Pirelli Supercorsa SP if you're going to keep street/track riding.

mrwoo, i remember my first track day.
I was initially put into the slowest group and cleaned them all up. Thought I was some kind of natural racing legend.
Got quickly moved up to the next level and saw nothing but bikes going past me and leaving me in their dust.
And there was still 3 levels above that.
A very large serving of humble pie.

Been a lot of water under the bridge since then but its fun to remember back.

I do have to get back out to the track though...

Sounds like you had a blast Woo. Keep me posted if you are going to do another. Maybe, assuming I have decent tires, and assuming my kids don't continue to take all my money, I could join you.

Mr woo....Watched the videos and got teh urge again :) I never was anything but a slow B rider but sure did have a lot of fun.. The local kids keep trying to talk me into going back out. We are only 55 minutes from the track..Looked like you were about 5 seconds faster than me riding my 636..
Was Dave Moss there at PTT? ( suspension guy)

No it was JPL Suspension. Dave Moss is at our local CyclevGear bike nights so he has worked on my bikes. Amazing man. You should get back on the track. I was never fast but the bike bike was so much fun on the track . i miss her.
