200/55 with a Stock 14R Chain??
01/05/18 12:03 PM

Getting close to a new set of tires on the '14 14R BBW. Thinking about the 200/55 instead of the 190/55 this time. The 200/55 will be ~0.21 inch in radius larger than the 190/55. Sure seems like I should be able to add some slack to the stock chain adjusters and stuff that sucker in there. I know a few of the forum members run them and I don't recall the need to brake the chain and add a link or two (which I don't want to do until I need a new chain).

Does anyone know for certain if I can run a 200/55 Pirelli Bada Bing Super Pooper V2 on a 14R with the stock chain?

Thanks Grn! Now I just have to find the best deal. I keep checking Rocky Mountain RTV, they seem to have about the best price, no tax and free shipping. Cant do much better than that. Seems like no one covers tires with their 10% discount deals.

Have you tried Riders Discount? www.ridersdiscount.com Got really good deal on my recent set of Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2s and Bell Race Star Helmet. Also no tax and free shipping.

I think however, you'll get a somewhat better turn-in performance with a 190.Hell,may not even notice it really....200's are okay. They won't last any longer though than a 190.I got just as good mileage, maybe a bit more(psi 42)than the 200 I tried. All in the compound really, and your riding style. For the extra money for a 200,190 seemed the winner.

I imagine the Gen2 swingarm is different than the Gen1 but the 200/55 Pirelli I used was as close as I would care to get. My chain is 118 pins. Stock on the Gen1 is 116 pins. I added one link for my 45T sprocket. What I remember is that the stock chain adjusters should be between the second and third mark. Mine was just about to the third mark when it was worn out. The brand new 118 pin chain with 45T sprocket was on the third mark when adjusted properly which gave me a bit longer than stock wheelbase. The 118 pin has stretched a bit since new. The 200/55 Pirelli I put in there with slightly longer than stock WB fit about as close as I care to go. If the swingarm tire space on a Gen2 is close to that of a Gen1, I would be careful about trying a 200/55 or 190/60 unless you have a reasonable amount of chain stretch. It might rub at high speed if it fits too close.

For the Super Pooper V2 I think the 200 series is ~$25 more than the 190 series, still the tire is as expensive as it gets for this bike. I was thinking the turn in wound be quicker than the 190/55 I have now, really the only reason I was considering it. The 2 or so track days I will do this yr dont really necessitate it but I was thinking I wanted to give it a try. I thought wtf, get the best tire and see if its really worth it, but not if I need a longer chain.

david

Just took a look at riders discount, I think they must not sell many or stock the 200/55 series tires. They at $200 a set move than Rocky mountain ATV

I thought wtf, get the best tire and see if its really worth it, but not if I need a longer chain.

I've never compared a 90/55 to a 200/55 in the same model of tire but I have compared both sizes in Supercorsa to Superbike Pro. I doubt there is much difference between these tires except the Pro is a slick. The 200/55 seemed to turn in even more eagerly than the 190/55. Of course, a whole year had lapsed from the time I had the 190/55 installed brand new and any new tire is bound to feel better than a worn out one. I am still pretty certain the 200 is best of the two. It did not have that ugly flattened off center nearly as much as any other tire I have used to a worn out state. The composition wore through on the 200/55 and it was just starting to look flat on the center so I'm sure I was wearing the sides much more than the 190/55s I've used. I also put a fresh 190/55 on the busa just a few months after the fresh 200/55 was put on the 14 and the busa which normally has the better handling of the two (IMO) did not feel as good as the 14 now does. I would buy a 200/55 over a 190/55 again even for the extra $40 or whatever it costs.

It would sure suck to buy a tire, install and put it back on to find it did not fit the swing arm. I don't use the swing arm marks to reference axle alignment with my Gilles Tooling axle adjusters but I can still eyeball where the axle is compared to the marks. I'll check that for you later today. Bear in mind the Gen2 swing arm might have a little different length than my Gen1 but I doubt the Gen2's would be shorter. I will mark off the length and measure my max swing arm depth to axle center today, too.

rudy,
Guess I will be going to Rocky Mountain ATV for my next set of tires. The ones I just got were 190/55s and they were on sale, I didn't look at or for 200/55s

I guess I should say..on my Gen 1..the 200 fit fine.I don't think Kawi made any changes to the swingarm between the the two models. My gen 1 came with a 200 on there. Then they switched to 190's.IDK why, maybe price point or something?

I guess I had a false memory. My axle is right about where it would normally be with a stock chain and sprocket on my Gen2. It's on the second mark, maybe a tad past it toward the third. The tape might look crooked but that is the camera angle. It is right above the center of the axle and the front one is as near to flush with the axial surface of the swing arm as I could get it. The corners on the swing arm are very round and its tricky to get the tape to line up perfectly to the surface below but I believe I got it pretty close. 13 and one eighth inch is what I have on my 08. At least you can measure after you get the tire on there. Sounds like you should have no problem though.

I just looked at the 190/55 Mich PP 2CT tire on BBW, there is at least an inch of clearance between the wall of the swingarm and the tire. Thanks for all of the info guys, 200/55 BadaBing Sooper Pooper V2 it will be (a pair of course), I'm sure my lap time will be greatly improved!

WOW--I would think a 200/60 would fit if that's the case. Do you have a stock length chain?

Rook, you have a gen 2 zx14r?

LOL you've seen a lot of it but never with fairings. No, mine is an 08.
