Air/Buzz/Rattle sound.
10/28/17 6:13 AM

Have a slight concern. Started about a week ago. When I crank it up, and if I'm riding below 5k-ish rpm there is a massive air/fuzzy sound. I can hear this no matter what gear I'm in. So I thought maybe I was too close to the issue, so I had a friend take a peek and he couldn't hear anything. I let him do some flybys and when he came by I could hear a slight rattle/buzz sound. He may not have heard anything but I know what it normally sounds like. Other than this issue, she runs perfectly fine. Now I finally got baffles for it and put them in, so I took my earplugs out. Maybe this is what's it normally sounds like, but my earplugs drowned it out? I know people run straight pipes for extended periods, but never heard any severe consequences doing it. The bike came without baffles and that was not a major concern for me at the time.Got caught in a downpour of rain one day will I was at work. Got ready to leave and cranked it up and it spat out some water. Maybe some residual water left over? Though with how hot the exhaust gets, I feel it would have evaporated. Need a oil change, maybe I should replace the filter this go round as well. Throttle grip had a lot of slack, so I tightened it. Doubt that has anything to do with the issue, but I'm just grabbing at straws here. 09-14. Any thoughts?

If the baffles quiet the bike down as much as the stock exhaust, you might here a wining noise from the water pump which is normal. If the front sprocket has been changed to one with -1 teeth, that might also make a whine.

Got ready to leave and cranked it up and it spat out some water. Maybe some residual water left over? Though with how hot the exhaust gets, I feel it would have evaporated.

There should be drain holes under the the pipe before the muffler. I don't know if all aftermarket pipes have them but they're there to release condensation or rain. If your baffles are trapping water, that could cause a rust problem. It's normal to see a few droplets collect on the tip of the stock mufflers right after you start up especially in cooler weather.

This doesn't seem like it could be a loud noise if your friend doesn't hear it. You could check for exhaust leaks at the joints in the pipe and headers. That probably would sound like an intermittent ticking noise if it was at leaking header.

Other than that, a slight ticking noise is normal.

Need a oil change, maybe I should replace the filter this go round as well.

I always do every time unless I put very few miles on the oil and dumped it for one reason or another. I doubt it will have any effect on the amount of engine noise but always a good thing to do.

Throttle grip had a lot of slack, so I tightened it.

I think that's safest. Get as much slack out as possible. Again, it's not going to quiet the bike down but it's easier to ride.

Thanks for the reply Rook! I haven't changed my sprockets yet, that is on my to do list, could be a possibility though but I spent the day trying figure it out, still no luck. Checked all my screws and bolts on my exhaust. Everything is just dandy. Not a loose piece anywhere. I rode it with baffles in and then I took the baffles out to see if they had anything to do with it. Of course it's louder with no baffles but the fuzzy/air sound got louder as well. I tried recording but on video it doesn't pick up the sound good enough. I even used a handful of pipe cleaners, and probed the exhaust to see if there was anything stuck in there or see if there was any rust going on. Still no luck. Im tired and frustrated even. Maybe the oil and filter change will be the magic solution. It also getting colder, but I'd think after it warming up things would be fine. In the end this all may be normal and just my imagination, BUT I rode without earplugs when I bought it and I do not remember it sounding like it does now. Of course straight pipes are loud and obnoxious, but now it sounds loud and obnoxious....with a stuffy nose. I will keep you posted.

Could it be your flasher relays buzzing?

A long shot but could it be your cam chain tensioner starting to fail. When they go you get a buzzy, clicky type of sound. Mainly at idle though..

Changed the cam chain tensioner. Did a valve adjustment on it as well. Changed the thermostat as well. Rattling still comes in from time to time. Mainly between 2k-3k rpm. Tried getting a video but you can’t really make any rattle sound out from it. Don’t really know what to do now except wait.

Did you inspect the vehicle down sensor. This was a fairly common issue on earlier 14's.At particular revs,it would buzz.I tightened mine up,though it wasn't making any noise. But some guys did correct that sound by tightening the bolts on there. It's amplified by the windscreen. If when sitting on the bike you're hearing this at a particular rpm,and it sounds like it's more towards the front of the bike, this could be your issue.

I put a plastic washer on each of the bolts with dampeners. It fit very loose before that. I'm sure that was intentional like the slight amount of play in the meter unit mounts. It's to soften up the really hard bumps. They might have been concerned a hard bump would simulate a tip over.

The washers have kept mine mine tight for years and I've never had the bike shut down when I hit a pot hole.

I agree, Grn. Initially RTR10 reported 5kish so I discounted the VDS rattle. I used to get a seat cowl rattle around 25k-3000 rpm too. Also the windscreen vibes a bit. There must be a resonance at that rpm.
