Radar/laser detector?
03/06/09 9:01 PM

Can anyone recommend a good radar/laser detector that can mount fairly easily on a ZX-14?

Not saying that I ever exceed the speed limit, but...

Thanks! -bg

BG I ordered this RAM motorcycle for stem base mount from Mountguys.com for my GPS. They have several options for bikes. I liked the ability to plug my fork stem with something useful. It is a dual ball mount to allow infinite adjustment. They also have mounts for radar detectors.

Powerletproducts.com (they were mentioned in the Cycle World wrap up) have some great universal power options for such an install.

I haven't bought a detector yet, but Adaptive (radarforbikes.com) has a nice wireless headset option with for helmet mount.

Adaptive is made specifically for motorcycles. Wayne Chen (the founder) is nice to deal with. I would give him a try.

As a guy that is "experienced" with radar and laser, I would not recomend any laser or radar detector.... waste of money... you are better off having an idea of where Coppers like to hang out.... Lets just say I have "heard" people say well my radar/laser detector never went off or my gps sez that i was travelling at this amount.... To be honest a laser speed detector can even get you from 700 meters away, which is a long ways away!!! The laser is pointed at a flat object on your vehicle ie; the front licence plate area, or on a bike the riders chest or what ever you can hit with the laser, so a detector wouldn't detect it unless the operator has the trigger pulled constantly or happens to point the laser at the detectors sensor, and is trying to find a sureface so you can get the reading.... radar is old technology so radar detectors do work to some extent and are used by sheriff and traffic member, either rolling (in car) or the old hand held cancer machine!! Their signal is so broad that it can be picked up easier by a radar detector..... around these parts laser is mostly used unless on the highway rolling..... save the money and just learn where you need to slow down and where u can go fast!!! Laser tickets are hard to defend cause they are so accurate, radar much easier cause it only picks up the fastest object, so there is more descrepancies as to what the operator observed as well as what the readings were.... Laser there is a scope and the laser is pointed at a specific vehicle... neways....

I call bullshit, dude.
The radar/laser jamming gear available now is capable of making your bike near totally stealth.
The top end stuff can prevent punch threw from amazing short distances, long range, fuggedaboutit.
Taking your chances on "having an idea" is a sure fire way to get nailed. There is no possible way for anyone to "know/guess" where the donut-slurpers will be hangin' or just happen to be rollin by when you come bombing along.
Electronic counter-measures are the only real chance you have.

"Donut Slurper" If you are refering to police men I happen to be one and take offence to disrepectfull remarks like that. I was trying to inform people about the difference between laser and radar, and how laser and radar detectors respond to them... I didn't think this was about laser or radar jammers. FYI laser and radar are totally different. If you have a JAMMER the person using the laser will know because you get a "jam" signal, then your fucked anyway because it is illegal to have jammers, and will get a bone neways. From my experience LASER DETECTORS are useless, RADAR DETECTORS on the other hand do work to an extent..... it only takes a quick pull of the trigger on the LASER to get a reading and by that time you are fucked, cause your detector may go off but you have already been hit with the laser and the operator has already got a reading, unless the operator is too slow on the trigger. Radar operates on a broader band and can be pickup easier. And also your bike might be stealth (highly unlikely unless you have designed it like a stealth jet) but you are riding it and there are lots of flat surface to hit with a laser. If it makes you feel safer from getting a ticket then waste your money on those devices. Toecutter we can test this out if you like maybe on the number 2 as you get into Calgary.... but if I catch you you have to pay the ticket!!!

And the only real chance you have to not getting nailed is to not speed, and perhaps take it to the track...

Guys of Lidar

Radarbusters

copradar

stealthbike

radar roy

Speeding on the #2 into Cowtown would be silly of anyone, I see the rozzers out there pretty much every night I roll in and out of there.

FYI laser and radar are totally different.

I'm aware of THAT, constable.

Perhaps you could bring your laser gun down to my little burg and test how fast the drug-dealer across the street peddles his "product" to the teeny-boppers around here.

I would like you to site specifically where it says that laser jammers are illegal in Alberta tho.
If yer ever down in the beeeutiful Southern Alberta, we can meet up at Timmies, a cream-filled and double-double on me....just no slurpin'...ok?

I also have a little experience but not on the cop end. Radar detectors work but not always in time. If a vehicle in front of you gets tagged you may have a chance but if it is instant on and you are the only one on the road you get the ticket. When traveling you cannot know where the Dudley's are sitting so you have to depend on electronic warfare. There is good and bad and not worth having words about. When we start playing we know what the end result can be so don't blame the "donut slurper" for doing their joband always remember trying to outrun the cop for a speeding ticket is not worth you life. If you get pulled over and have a radar detector you probably will not talk them out of a ticket on the roadside.
I worry about passing an unmarked than I do radar.

I was gonna get that adaptiv one-you know, after reading the "lowdown"on the "radarroy"site.I figure,if I'm bustin the limit,on a curve, and the hp are comin the other way, that's it-I'm popped. On the highway straights-I keep a good look ahead-and if there's a car or truck ahead-then I stay back-let them run point. Most drivers here are goin 80,90 on the open roads. So stayin back(2 second rule) is really not too bad.90's a nice pace.Couldn't justify the purchase. The hp and sheriff's here are cool anyway-when I did get tickets, they always wrote it for LESS than what we both knew was the REAL speed;)Besides,it's quite possible they know who I am by now-only zx in this part of the state-all respect and props to em'.

I have a Whistler Pro 3450 (www.whistlergroup.com) and can attest that it does work. It has a separate display, radar antenna, and laser sensor. It has saved me and my group more than once. The display is small enough to fit on top of the ZX's "dash" and can be heard at lower speeds. I added an ultra bright led to the output so that I can see it going off.

Fuzz4141, razzin' the rozz that's all. I thank all the Officers for their service to our country.
However when it comes to speeding, fugeddaboutit. 32yrs I've had a motorcycle license, and I'm usin' every bit of it.
I have no respect for the "law".
There is very little justice in our "law".
The "judges" in our country blow dead dogs. THEY are the problem, not the cops.
Unfortunantly everyone see's the cops, they are the ones we deal with on the front line.
Therefore they are the ones who catch the shit from the citizens.
Believe you me if judges had to drive around in marked cars signifyin' who they were...ooohhhh, i'd like that
"judges" here are either corrupt or total morons, either case is unacceptable. Remember judges are just drug-takin',child-diddlin',leftist lawyers who managed to suck enough dick to get their cushy for life jobs.
They are the one's who foster disrespect for the law.
Look at the gang activity just here in our province, gangsters shooting other gangsters in restaurants, drive-bys, the drug problem is totally out of control.
Judges can't let these slime-balls out fast enough.

I served 4yrs in our military, I respect the uniform and what it represents, and the person who earned it.
But f**k the judges, f**k the law, f**k the lawyers, grip it and twist it, have a nice day.

Rant over, please return to your regularly scheduled boring life.

I like your rant TC!!!! I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YA!!! Thats why personally I don't like to break peoples balls over speeding or cheesy traffic tickets, leave that up to the traffic nazis!!! With respect to the jammers,I will actually have to look up the TSA to see if they are illegal, have never come across it to tell you the truth, I'll check and let ya know.... I was just giving my opinion on laser/radar detectors and my experiences with stopping people with them, now I may ask them which ones they are using and will report back which ones failed!!! TC if the weather keeps up here I might have to jump on the 14 and head down south and take ya up on the Timmys, then we can go speed around see if the sheriffs can catch us!!!! ha!!

Yer on constable, I've already had my "encounter" with the Sheriff's...there's $351, plus $200 for the shyster to get it knocked down to that...I coulda used for a radar detector.

Hello Everyone

I have been using radar detectors in my vehicles since the 80's and back then you definitley had the edge above the highway patrol but since around 1998 when the NYPD started using the laser gun your odds of getting a ticket went up greatly. The radar is easy to detect and usually gives you a fair amount of warning before you even see the police car and then when you round the bend there he is hiding on the grass, but by then you have already slowed to a reasonable speed. The laser works with a line of sight and the gun has a scope or view finder built into it, the officer lines up the vehicle that he thinks is speeding gets you in his sight and pulls the trigger and your as good as got done deal see you in court. The detector will sound the alarm (LASER<LASER<LASER) and when you look ahead he is already coming of the grass and matching speed to pull you over. I was stopped by a cop with a laser in his car and when he walked up to my car and saw my radar detector he made the comment "NICE RADAR DETECTOR DIDN'T HELP YOU MUCH". These days it seems to be 50/50 half the patrols are using laser and the other half radar. I would rather have the radar/laser detector and have that 50/50 chance on getting nailed with the laser cop than to be totally unarmed against the police. My wife and I both run with detectors and they have saved me hundreds of times. I currently have thePassport Escort 9500XI blue and this thing even tells you where the traffic red light cameras are its great. Be Safe out there.

Thanks And Happy Speeding

RE: Radar/laser detector?

All this brings back my detector days, I had the CB's before detectors, the CB's were good to start with, then the friction between the Truckers and Cagers, then the police figured they could say, "10-4 good-buddy, it's clear to the so-and-so mile marker", when you got there, nabbed!

Then the "Fuzzbuster" came out, I thought I was invincible! I sped all the time! It was the best, made by "Cincinnati Microwave", then the police got the new radar's to beat the "Fuzzbuster", then the next detector came out to detect the latest radar, then the radar came out that the latest detector couldn't detect. Yep, what a game it was, guess who made the radar units, yep, Cincinnati Microwave, same one that made the detectors!

I had the detectors, kept getting tickets, had racked up 34 points on a 12 point system once before my letter came to send in my license! I begged them to let me keep them, they give me 1 point to drive on, I kept using the detectors, got two more tickets, a 4 pointer and a 2 pointer, they sent for the license again and again, I begged to keep them, and won another point to drive on!

I was finally proven by the law to be an addictive speeder. I made it through the next year without a ticket and got all my points back.

I remember when I learned that who made the radar units, was the same ones that made the detectors, the speed limit was 55 nationwide then, I traveled 134 miles to work, I was running the brand new, beat all radar, whatever units made, so they advertized. The instant-on had just came out, even though you got a signal on the detector and you could hit the brakes before the unit could lock-in on you, it did set it off if you were above the speed the officer had his unit set at.

Busted, I was, I got pulled, thought I'd be smart and put the detector in the glove box before he got to me. He walks up to the window and says, "where's your bird-dog?", I sat quietly thinking he was just testing me, he said you either have an Escort or XX (another brand that I don't remember), because of how it set off my unit. I laughed and said "it's in the box."

He took me back to his cruiser and showed me the different tones that the unit omitted from cars that had no detectors, lesser quality ones and then the upper end ones of the day. It was, the better the unit the longer the beep from his unit stayed on.

The story is long but to be short about it, he basically told me, it’s a losing battle, the same company makes mine and yours and if I threw away my "bird-dog" he, or any other officer, would not give me a ticket for going over 55 as long as it wasn't over 70 mph. If I kept the "dog", I was going to get them for anything over 55!

Well, the story got too long here, even though I tried to keep it short, I apologize.

In the end, I have not had a detector since and have had great luck of doing my speeding in certain “picked” areas and like the guy that give me another point to drive on said, “I’ll tell you what I told Richard Petty, take it to the track”!
