Newbie From PA
02/19/10 5:10 AM

Like many others, I've been a forum reader in the shadows for some time. I'm a lifelong rider, a HD and custom chopper convert, a past Hayabusa owner and have finally landed on the best of the best - ZX14. Some modifications and hopefully more to come.

Welcome to the fold! I think you'll find this place is chock full of excellent 14-specific info and extremely knowledgeable folks. Just curious - why ceramic bearings?

Ceramic bearings were a real luxury. I didn't expect HP or MPG gains, only convenience. It is so incredibly easy to move the bike around manually, especically backing up in parking lots or on unstable surfaces. I had them on a 9 foot long custom chopper and it made such a difference that I was willing to spring for the $300+ on the ZX14.

Most of the modifications were done over the winter, so the tire has 1 mile on it.

PAZX14,

Real sweet bike you have it set up nice. Do you have the info on the custom Foreman Grills I'm looking to get mine done?

I went to a sport bike shop called Triple Plate Customs (TPC) in Newark, Delaware to get the work done. I didn't want the completely smooth foreman grills that you can purchase from places like Tricked Out Custom Cycles, or other places (I would not do any business with H2OCycles.com) that offer them online. I wanted something different from what everyone else had or could get online as an easy bolt on. I had Diego at TPC fill in the recessed areas of the foreman grills and leave just the small section of raised fins and paint the grills to match my bike. Then I asked him to pin stripe the top edge of the grills with the Kawasaki green, as I wanted to retain a little green color. This way the fins don't quite stand out as much, but are still present.

I think he did a great job and it cost $200 for everything. He is also designing some custom rear fairings (the pieces on either side of the seat that connects to the tail light assembly) that cover the exposed frame on the ZX14. When he finishes getting them injection molded, I will post a pic. I was looking for something a bit distinctive and the fiberglass prototypes he made looked really good.

Admiralman, you know your tires. I had them in the same size (240mm) on several other bikes and they held up very well, of course I wasn't going to the track or drag strip either - just touring and some twisties.

I run those on my Triumph Rocket III. Curious how they do on yours deep in the turns. I have done some canyon riding on my R3 but you can only go so deep with 800lbs under you (That should get some laughs). Anyway, I could drag the pegs on that beast but that's about it. The 880s worked out well for me and they last really well unless you are burnin the hell out of them.

They handle pretty well although I admit I'm not dragging a knee. A 240mm tire size limits how responsive a bike is moving from one turn into another, but they hold the line nicely. I like how they also hold up in wet weather. I too have experienced them on an 800 lb bike (a 9 foot long Bourget custom chopper) which certainly can be limiting.
