Hi all. New guy here and need a little help please. Need to know what this cover is called. As it's leaking oil and I need a new one.

Well, some people call it a timing rotor cover. I believe the SM calls it the crankshaft sensor cover.

If you remove the cover, engine sealant is applied at the engine case seam and around the notch for the sensor grommet. Also, they suggest a bit of LokTite on the upper bolt to seal that hole which goes through the engine case.

The cover has an O-ring gasket that is supposed to be replaced.

You may not need to replace the whole cover. If it's actually dripping out, i would seal it up. If you have a little grime around the grommet or some other place, I'd wipe it off and don't worry about it.

I have full pics if you want me to update the tutorial for crankcase sensor cover removal.

I try not to use LokTite on that screw hole but if you do, use blue not red. Also, I try to apply the sealant so that it is unlikely to get squeezed to the inside of the engine case. All of this is to avoid foreign junk from contaminating the engine.

Cheers for the help lads. Unfortunately it is leaking out of one of the scrap marks where it has cracked the housing

I would change the whole thing then. i doubt it is a very expensive part. if you're careful about viewing photos, Ebay can be a good source for used engine covers. I bought a stator cover and clutch cover for half price. Both were in good shape except for normal cosmetic wear.

Someone sent me their damaged "pulse cover." I used a door knob drill to bore a hole in the cover to watch the timing while filming the action. Since 2008 or there about, I've been using the same cover for both the 2008 and now on the 2013. Do the math, no leaks.

Search for 'Amazing Goop' glue.
1. Brake or contact clean the crack with the spray tub. This forces the oil out both sides so it's oil free.
2. A finger with a drop on the end; we press that into the crack and keep pushing it in before it sets up.
3. Then clean up around the crack but do not roll up over it or it might pull out.
4. Then [from the inside] place a dab over the crack and let it setup for a few days in the air.
5. On the outside crack, press in a finger full and clean around the crack before it sets up.

With as may times as I've removed the cover and use the same gasket, I've never used any sealer to the case splits. It's been leak free at the glass to cover hole and pulse cover to engine case. Choose your poison in so many ways.

Pulse cover $64US
Goop glue less than $5US

I've had a few smudges of oil around the cover even with sealant but nothing that couldn't easily be wiped off with a rag once per year.
