Safety Wire Bolts Help
12/27/15 5:23 PM

I'm planning on running at the Mojave Magnum in April and I need to lock wire the front axle pinch bolts and the oil drain bolt. Do the Drag racers also have to lock wire these bolts? I can't find metric safety wire SH cap screws for the axle and hex head for the oil drain anywhere.... I thought it would be an expensive but obtainable part but nada. I've been looking in all the usual sites the aircraft builders go for lock wire bits but it's all SAE and no metric.

The axle SH Cap Screws are M8x40 and the oil bolt is M12x15, anyone know where I can order these from?

I really don't want to have to buy the jig(s) and drill my own.

Thanks ..... Rudy

No love at Pro Bolt checked there in the past, they are all flange bolts (at least thats what the web page shows), maybe I should give them a call next week?

Thanks

If you really need race spec bolts, you could drill some socket heads yourself. The tapered socket heads would be hard to do with a drill press but a dremmel used with the press stand made by Dremel would do it. The stand was not too expensive. I'd use aluminum on pinch bolts and tighten carefully. I have had no problems with my aluminum pinch bolts coming loose and they are not safety wired.

With the safety pin hooped to the other pin, you insert the [smaller size] clips so they both tug opposite each other, they automatically snug each bolt tight. Same goes for fast clipping the drain plug. I have more safety wire than I'll ever use. PM me your address, I'll pull a few feet and send you two diameter sizes. Just drill the holes and be done with it.

Hub, thanks much for the offer on the lock wire!! I do have some left over from my boat which had a pair of 454 Crusaders that I liked to lock wire some of the critical bolts on the trans output shafts.

I think Rook's suggestion of the AL bolts is a good one I had not thought about. I ordered the AL M8x40 SH cap screws for the front axle pinch bolts from Pro Bolt, I can drill them without to much drama, the ss version would have been very hard without the jig and that was $$$.

Now I just need to order a new oil drain hex bolt and I can deal with drilling one lock wire hole in that.

Oil Plug should be easy to find. Try to find a magnetic one with a hallow center.

Have not done the 14 yet, but I will. I like to wire all oil drain plugs on bikes so
that I don't feel like over torquing them.

Drilling without a jig is hard, I sure can't do it. I've busted many a drill
bit and wasted bolts.

Here's a shot of the plug on my 10

Bought a Moose racing plug, but was wrong size for the 14. Size was right, but
thread count was off. I'll try again as soon as I know for sure the right size.

Don't buy the "Lockhart-Phillips magnetic drain plug" per Danno's thread, the
head broke off on that one.

Rook,

Thank you very much, this looks perfect and the 10R and the 14R both have the M12x15 oil drain plug!! One click order from A-Prime

Added to my Amazon "wishlist"

Looks good, the only thing in the past I've had problems
with the plugs that have the anodizing on them and usually
just wire brush the anodizing off the threads. Just don't
like to force on a drain plug.

Wait... a... minute.....

"Lightweight Aluminum Construction"

I'll pass, only like the steel ones.

if it's safety wired, I would just torque it lightly. I did that with all my pro bolts. About half suggested to 60%. Never had any engine screws come loose and I use anti Seizing agent on them.

I thought the anodizing would help prevent seizing, to. Only aluminum bolts I have had come loose were on the fairings. I have had my Ti rotor bolts come WAYYY loose...almost until one was about to touch the inside of the swing arm. I used blue locktite on those now and no problems. Watch the Ti bolts with the shiny colored finish. It's almost like chrome. Pretty slick I guess. Also, I would be very careful about torquing even if yo use Ti. I broke a Ti bolt once. Major PITA.

Found this filler cap to go with if you're in the holiday spirit.

Might as well get some gaskets for the plug. 10 will last you for ever.

No the rain scared me off, they did get son runs in on Sunday but i pulled out on Friday. It was so slippery I thought I was going to drop the bike putting it on the trailer ion the rain on Friday. The thought of 200 HP , wet runway and slipping rear tire just did not seem right to me
