A little input for the upcoming season...
03/14/15 1:38 PM

Hey fellas....

So I have been surfing the web looking around at some gear n such lately in excitement of being able to ride here hopefully in the next month (never ever...move to buffalo ny) when i realized i could use some new gloves this year. Ive got a pair of alpinestars SMX short cuff gloves. They are nice no problems really. But there is a pair of longer (gauntlet style) aplinestars gloves that i really like. My question...pros and cons of short vs longer glove? What do you guys wear for street riding...and why? I think i might go for the longer ones..unless somebody can share some good advice why I shouldnt lol...thanks!

...on a side note....and understand..i AM NOT starting a tire thread....but I cannot decide between ordering a set of Dunlop Q3s or Pirelli Angels....Q3s are $260 shipped to my door with a $50 mail in rebate as well. Pirellis are easily $325 shipped, no rebate offers. I know the Pirelli has better mileage and all, but the dunlops were great tires on my R1. Will they feel great on my zx14 as well? What would you guys do?....

Gauntlet gloves I use for more serious sport riding. THey are bigger to carry along with me if I need to take them off so I don't use them for everyday riding. No reason I couldn't. The palm is mostly thin and just as easy to feel the controls. The gauntlets are not really much warmer than a cheap pair of gloves. They look more extreme as far as styling and they are better protection for the back of the hand, fingers and wrist. Get the gauntlets and pair of nine-nintyniner fabric gloves and you'r ready for anything.

Thanks Rook! That's probavly the route I'll go with it too. What's your opinion on that tire situation? Go with the good deal on Q3s. Or spend more dough on the Angels

I held off commenting cuz I never have tried the Q3 or Angels. I now have the Q2 on the 14 and as far as I remember, it struck me as a nice tire but not overwhelming for grip. Not surprisingly, the more track oriented tires like Bridgestone BT003 and Micheline POwer Ones seemed a little more sticky. The Pirelli Diablos I have in the busa right now are the best tires I have used for grip. Don't expect any of those to last long though.

I have this little hunch you will always have a special place in your heart for Pirellis. You know, once you know what you love to eat at your favorite restaurant, you start to wonder if the chef actually makes anything that is even better but 99% of the time, trying a new dish disappoints. That's what I find. When I love something, that is the ONLY thing from there on in.

I wear the Held Short Race Gloves very well built glove! they are a lil expensive but the material and stitching are dam good!

Tires all i use is Dunlop i currently have the Q3's w/55 rear on the 14.. they haven't failed in wet or dry and if you properly maintain them mileage is very good... The rebate offer that going on now is a perfect chance to give them a try IMO but as said go wit a 55 series!

Gauntlets offer that just little bit more protection. But for many riders apparently overwhelming as far as day to day riding. I don't think gauntlets for street riding is over kill. For me riding is entertainment and not utility. I'll go out and ride for 2-3 hours and that's what I'm doing with maybe a restroom break. I plan on getting gauntlets to wear since that's the case.

I've got Q3s sitting in my garage, want to get a little more out of the M5s but they are EOL (maybe 400 miles pushing it). I've read mixed opinions on Q3s and 14s, that they don't offer enough grip for a 14, then some say they're fine. I was satisfied with the stock M5s, and generally magazines rate Q3s as even a more sporty tire (which I've actually found a little confusing as M5s are a soft compound tire). I'm looking forward to seeing how handling characteristics change with these tires, and exactly how much different they feel when riding aggressively.

I wear gauntlet gloves 100% of the time. They are a little more work taking on and off than short gloves but they cover my wrist. I don't like having any skin exposed. Personally I ride in full track gear all the time.

I wear gauntlets any time wearing full leathers, or leather jacket. In the extreme heat I wear a mesh jacket for commuting and with that jacket I use a pear of short gloves. I always wear all leather for "serious" sport riding on the street and a race suit for the track.

If you were talking about the gloves, I don't think there is any need to spend that much. Maybe a lot nicer than mine but these were about $60 at Competition Accessories a few years back.

COMPETITION ACCESSORIES

CORTECH ADRENALINE GAUNTLETS

They were the coolest looking gauntlets and a lot cheaper than the brand that looked identical. Probably they won't hold together as long but to try them out, I'd recommend. I don't use mine a lot but so far, all stiching is holding. 0 complaints. I'm glad I didn't buy the more expensive ones that look the same.

check out this album if interested in seeing more pics.

I always wear a full gauntlet glove. I've seen the shorty type get ripped off in a long, sliding crash. The gauntlet has the strap right at the wrist which helps prevent that.

I put the Dunlap Q3s on my 08' 14 last fall (birthday present from the wife) and I absolutely love them. A week after the install I had to spend an hour on the highway driving through a pretty serious rain storm. The tires ran awesome through the rain (though I recommend avoiding that when possible) and I had complete confidence on the bike.

That being said, I've never run Pirelli's, so I can't compare.

I have 2 pair of short gloves (QWI padded palm and Dainese D-Air) and two pair of gauntlets (AStars and Tourmaster waterproof), so I'm ready for any contingency.

Have been running the Angel GTs for a while now, and I'll stick (pun intended) with them. Sporty tires are fun, but they don't last.

I ran Q2's last year. Grip was ok, but with 325 stallions at the rear what can you expect.... lol
1 thing I will say though is that my front tire is totally screwed - cupping badly and it can't have more than 3 or 4 thousand kms on it. For that reason alone I think I am done with Dunlops for awhile.
For gloves I rock the Gauntlet style. Usually they have a little wrist bone padding puck or something that the shorter gloves don't offer.

HAHAHAH 325 HP? HOOOLLLYYY SHIITTTT!!!

I doubt there's any tire out there that can withstand firepower of that magnitude. My bike, basically stock, has spun the tire in 2nd. 325 fucking hp? I can't imagine.

Ya know I thought at first Zx14beast had a typo or was grossly misinformed lol. Then I scrolled down and read the mods in your signature. That's complete insanity... You might want to see if you can retrofit some Hoosiers on the back of that thing hahah

For those who wondered, with everyone's advice I ended up grabbing the Q3s and some Alpinestars gauntlet gloves...

I rode Dunlops twice...both sets were the high end ones. Both sets ended up VERY hard towards their middle of life. Not so confidence inspiring when yer runnin curves at 130 or more.

On my first set of Pirelli angel GT's and they work great for my riding style. I've pushed them fairly hard through the twisties without any surprises. Straight line acceleration grip is marginal, but I expected that from a harder compound really. First 3 gears at anything over half throttle in TC1 will have it banging off the traction control. I got mine for $299 shipped from revzilla.

running a michelin super sport on my 12 - great tire, whot. Heavy but they heat up well and adhere well when craned over. Was very happy with the pilot road 3's. Rocking Shinko hook ups on the 14r. Great in the rear, but Beastie has warned about the front wheel i.e. reports about failures.
