a quick survey of an idea that I had
01/05/15 11:12 AM

Just a quick survey of my ZX 14 Motorcycle Friends,

So I have this 12 color, large format printer that can can output museum quality images in my home office. And as I was outputting a picture of my new bike ( poster size 24"x36") it occurred to me that others might like a similar poster for their mancaves or garages. I have a collection of old pics of bikes I have over the years but they are pretty dog eared and fading and how I wish I wouldve captured all my bikes in a better photographic format. Oh well, from now on. So I am curious if you could purchase a poster of your motorcycle would you and what would your price point be? Im thinking of going to bike nights and seeing if people would be interested in me photographing and then outputting a poster for them for a nominal fee.
Thx

I'd have to imagine a photo quality print on photo paper that size would be pretty expensive. It seems to me pricing in the range of $40-60 would seem fair. Walmart will do 16x20s for $13, and 20x30 "metallic" print for $25.

I have been a pro quality printer for many decades now.

The price point is right, as stated above.

Recognize that, at that point, one do-over will null all your profit (hey, that color is not right / the background sucks / the "pose" is not what I wanted / it's too dark... etc).

As long as you have control over the workflow (using your own camera media, and not the customer's jpeg), you can eliminate some of the do-over.

Some, but not all.

What i really want is:

UAV video of me riding my 14, from a quarter / front standoff of, say, 20 ft.

On a track.

Wheelee-ing.

And then a zoom in for a closeup of my big fat grin.

Meb, there are drones that will follow you around, but then it becomes an issue of how fast they can go.

Do overs? Changes? Free? No. When you are operating at that narrow of a profit margin you can't do anything free. They don't like it, it becomes a self promo sample. I was an illustrator for 11 years and I took it ^ so many times having to do changes after the work was done, it drove me nuts. That's a big part of the reason why I quit doing it. The way we delt with it was to purposely get the work done under budget so we had money to cover clients' little changes. I could never get myself to do that on my own. I always spent way too much time and created a masterpiece that somehow needed changes.

Meb/Rook

Thanks for the input and right on with your advice. I think if I find the rt customers and claim upfront what the output is and the cost for changes then perhaps......Then again I bought the printer for my own fun and photo output so who knows.....Thx again and ride on, be careful out there. : )
