Hmm, this website ad seems to say that this replacement cap maintains the same venting system as the OEM:

- Push, then turn, so unlikely to loosen on its own
- 6063 aluminum so must be reasonably lightweight

That looks like a copy of the Evotech I have on my busa. The Evotech is a nice one.

Rook: Assuming for amoment that it is a clone of your Evotech:

- What does the Evotech weigh? edit: found this answer in your prior posts. 0.40 b
- How does that compare to the OEM gas cap weight? edit: found this answer in your prrior posts. Saving = 0.48 lb
- No issues with it? (e.g. water leakage into the tank, venting issues, needing frequent lubrication, etc)
- How long has it been working ok for you?
- is the "installation" as simple as unscrewing the 3 OEM bolts, pulling out the OEM assembly in one piece, and then installing the new gas cap with the OEM bolts? Or is it more complicated in any way? (Other than ensuring no sparks created during the process :) )

I thought of another question,Rook: Do I re-use the neoprene gasket form the OEM gas cap assembly, or do I need to buy a new one at the Kawasaki dealer? Although my ZX-14R is "new", it is a 2017 "leftover" so the gasket is 2 years old.

I'm sure I got a new gasket with my Lightech but I don't think there'd be a problem reusing the OEM one. I'd have to check my EVOtech weight picture but I think I might have reused the OEM gasket for that one. I seem to recall lining up the indentation in the gasket to the surface on the lip of the fuel tank hole. I'm sure you'd be better off with a new gasket but it isn't going to leak anyway unless you overfill the tank. Then it would run into the fuel tank ring recess and down the water drain hole. A paint damage risk is all that would be. I have seen ZX-14 fuel tanks that suffered paint damage in this area though.

Thanks, Rook. So, I'll probably buy a gasket from the dealership if one is not included with the new filler. That way, if I tear the oldgasket getting it out,it won't matter.

Rook: Wow, that was fast - the new gas filler (apparent Hong Koong copy of the Evotech)arrived today! Look at the photo though, which shows the filler assembly from the BOTTOM (interior of tank) view:

Questions:

1. Is the "kink" in the clear vent hose not a problem? I can't see how gasoline will be able to flow fast enough through that very kinked restriciton before flooding the fuel filler recess in the tank. I also cannot see how I could UNkink it, as it has to make that very tight turn and stay INside the 5 mounting bolts, right?

2. See the wide black gasket under the center section? But notice that there is no gasket under the outer rim. Is there an "outer" gasket on the OEM filler assembly, or does the OEM filler assembly outer ring bolt directly to the metal surface of the fuel tank with no sealing gasket between them? I'm asking because the service manual does not mention any gasket other than the one on the center section, nor does it show any other gasket in the exploded parts diagrams. (But then it does not show the center gasket either :) ).

There IS also an o-ring around the actual removable cap, that seals the cap-to-filler interface all around the periphery of the cap.

This makes a weight saving of 0.59 lb = 67% over the OEM assembly!

The hose on my EVOtech was a soft silicone-like material. I believe I routed it to the outside of the screw boss to help avoid kinkage but it's possible it was also kinked in shipping now that I think about it. I think a typical heat expansion fuel overflow would be slow enough to run through that. Question is: is that the right material to contact gasoline for prolonged periods? I have used vinyl hose to syphon gas and it gets stiff almost immediately. Might crack over time. I would check on something like silicone or maybe the proper grade of tygon for gasoline.

Just looking at it, I wonder if that hose will even fit in the overflow port? Seems to mine was about 3/4 that diameter and it was a tight fit. You can just leave the hose off. I do on my LighTech because it didn't have a hose. No problems just careful how high you fill.

It is just the gasket that contacts the rim of the filler neck hole. No gasket goes around the perimeter of the ring where the screws are.

Thanks for the link to your removal / install guide! THAT is GREAT! I take it the tiny gasket for the overflow vent is not reused? (You don't actually say yes or no in the guide)

Also, I realize I can leave the overflow tubing off, and I never overfill, BUT when the bike goes over road bumps, I suspect there is some sloshing of fuel into the filler cavity, so the fuel tank paint might be exposed to it, so I think I'll try to use either the tubing provided or a better grade tubing that bends more elegantly and is impervious to gasoline. I'll need to measure the required ID.

Improved! I have a friend who owns a motorcycle restoration business. I visited his shop this morning, and this is what we ame up with:

The new tubing is real fuel line tubing. It is also smaller ID and OD. We heated up the end to get it stretched onto the metal nipple. The smaller OD and softer tubing bends easier. The metal spring prevents kinking by forcing the tubing to stay "round" versus oval. I made the tubing just a bit longer and will cut it to ideal length when I do the installation.

But how do I now remove the ugly "octane required" decal near it, without harming the tank's paint finish?

Does a careful use of heat gun work to loosen the glue? Or Kerosene to dissolve it? Or is it buried under the clearcoat?

I just waited a year or two and mine came off. I tried Goo Gone to remove the adhesive residue but it didn't work very well. Denatured alcohol should do a better job and be safe on the paint too. If you really need to, use rubber cement thinner and that is guaranteed to take it right off. I doubt it would harm the clear coat but as always, test in a small inconspicuous spot like the belly pan.

That gas cap looks great! and the solution for the overflow hose is brilliant! Photos of my EvoTech show the hose was not kinked.

BTW, looks like your Chinese knockoff might be lighter than the original. Looks like you have more metal machined away on the underside.

In your tutorial, that drain hole in the fuel tank with the rubber gasket at its top: WHERE does it drain overflow fuel to?

Both holes in the fuel tank cap recess go to steel tubes that run THROUGH the fuel tank and exit at the nipples at the back of the tank. From there, they go to rubber hoses that rout to the LH side of the bike and drain in front of the shift pedal. The rubber hose with a another short length of hose at the end of a plastic bottle is the fuel ring water drain. The hose that has no bottle is the breather/overflow pipe which is the one with the rubber grommet up in the fuel cap ring. There is also a hose with a plastic bottle having a rubber stopper and that is the air box drain. At least that is how it is on the Gen1.

A new bike might not vent al that well because of the wax they out in the lines at the factory. If you overfill your tank, it might not run through the overflow readily. Doing a test overfill might not work too well but you could try that and let it sit in the sun for a while. My bike used to expel a small amount of fuel through the breather when summer came around and the gasoline expanded while in storage.

Well, I have had the new aftermarket gas cap on the bike for over a month now, and it seems to work perfectly, at least so far:

- No leakage onto the tank
- No venting issues
- The positive "latching" seems to work, and is easy to use (Just push down on the center while "locking" or "unlocking". It does stay "locked" reliably on the road
- Finish seems to be holding up
- A couple of riders have admired its appearance
- It did save 0.56 lb. versus the OEM locking cap.
