July 04, 2025 first ride
07/04/25 7:54 PM

I've been working hard to switch over to living a daytime life when I'm off of work. I don't have a problem working at night but when the weekend comes, I have three days of low motivation to do anything. I finally got my brand new bike together and got out for a ride today. Nothing special, a couple rides around the lake and a shorty twisties ride to the interstate. I mostly did the speed limit, one large throttle sprint for a few seconds and I decelerated from a hundred. One quick climb to 7000 rpm in first gear. Must have been in the nineties today. Perfect day to go fast around the noon hour. The animals retreat into the woods for the most part. I played it cool though. I saw just one cop who caught up to me because I was going under the speed limit.

I saw a BMW S1000rr for sale out by the lake. No price, just a phone number with area code from the Milwaukee area. It's the 2009-14 white, blue and red first gen with the shark gills on the right and the asymmetric eyeballs. Akrapovic exhaust. Looks like the bike has some use. I noticed a flattened spot on the rear rotor like the bike rolled into something hard and hit the rotor. There's a clear sheet of vinyl as a tank protector that has a film of dirt around it. The chain looks dirty. It does have new tires. The bike is not spotlessly clean like someone may be riding it or maybe they just leave it out in all weather while it's up for sale. LOL I noticed a thread of spider web across the underside of the windscreen. It's a cool bike, one I always wanted. I like the later years even better but this one was from a time in my life when I really had a deep intrigue with that bike. ...and there's no arguing, they made it weird looking on purpose because they knew it was going to revolutionize the world of liter bikes. It's always going to be a unique bike whether it becomes a collectors item or not. I think I'll take a drive over there again and look it over real hard. Maybe I'll call the owner. I might take it for 6-7 thousand. I might go eight if it looked like it was kept in pristine condition. Chances are, I'm about the only guy in town that has an interest in sport bikes and can afford a bike like this. The only guys you see on sport bikes around here are under 25 years old and not too many of them. If the seller is from the Milwaukee area, I wonder why he's not selling it down there? College kid maybe?

Glad you were about to get that first ride in, Rook! I planned to get in a ride this weekend, but when I had time it was just too hot. Supposed to be cooler next weekend, so we'll see. Agree, that BMW was a game changer. Good luck if you decide to go after it.

I'll check into it. Something abut the condition of that bike says, "track use." That's not necessarily bad but it lowers the value considerably in my opinion. ....like, get ready to do lots of restorative work that will require BMW special tools. The bike is actually a blue and white 2017 according to pics I looked up. Still the Gen1 styling. I presume the lowest trim level if they had trim levels back then and I think they did.

Second ride of the year was July 05. I was at the tail end of a line of cars. The car at the front was doing 40 mph. The car behind him passed when it was safe. I pulled out and passed the whole bunch, pulling in behind the car that had initially passed. Five minutes later, I see a deer through the thin trees and brush running toward the highway. I rolled off. The car ahead apparently didn't see it until it was almost in front of him. He braked hard and swerved, narrowly missing it. I guess that's why the car we passed was doing 40 mph, he knew there were lots of deer there. I expect to see no animals at midday when it's hot and sunny. If a deer gets spooked by something, it's not going to worry about staying in the shade. Now I'm spooked. I'll be doing 40 the next time I ride down that stretch.

I have found that once I start down the rabbit hole it doesn't end until I get the prize, whether it be what I was originally looked at or something very similar. Good luck.

Glad you got in another ride and avoided the deer. We have cooler weather expected this weekend, so hoping to get in a few miles.

It is expected to be hotter than blazes again here this weekend and I'll be out. I'll take the hottest roads to keep those tires up to temp. Brand new bike and stock tires, I'm not pushing it too hard but good to know I have the most favorable conditions. LOL lots of rain lately and pebbles washed out on the roads. I'm cautious of that. It's a hazard riding but I do so love a rain storm. We just had a dandy and it was beautiful. I'll be watching the road the next time I'm out though. Good God I love summertime. I could handle not having snow...ever. Winter and snow and little daylight also have their place in my heart. I'm very happy to be alive and to be well.
