ZX14R CoPart Purchase
09/15/26 2:49 PM

Curious if anyone here has any experience/advice on buying wrecked zx14r's off copart or other auction sites(hell even Facebook)?

Currently looking at one with front end damage with a scrap title that looks pretty decent

I know i won't be able to retitle the bike for road legal use realistically but for a project to buy and drag race bike potentially what are the kinds of thing to lookout for and keep in mind

I'm already familiar with things such as the bent monocoque frame at the forks/below the triple tree being cracked but just looking for other advice/tips on buying broken zx14r to save money/work on

Currently have a 2024 zx14r with some mods(Oiling/Ivan Flash/Clutch Mod/Brock's ct meg) but really trying to keep it as my fun to have street riding bike and seeing if a dedicated low cost track only zx14r makes sense

Be aware there will probably be an auction fee tacked on. Bid accordingly. I've heard of Gen2s in riding condition but a little rough going for about $5000. I'd investigate that option open unless you can get a wreck for a very low price.

I looked at copart yesterday and would not chance a buy unless more pics available. Front end damage on all but unable to see important stuff. Maybe there is a way to visit bikes or at least more pics ?

When I've looked at CoPart you can select your location and if there's something in your area you can visit the location before or during the auction time which I believe is about a week. The 5.0 Mustangs I'd been looking for usually have multiple pictures available after you click on the actual vehicles first picture in the listing.

You're most welcome PolicyTerm. It sounds like you know your way around a bike well but I have a pile of Gen2 tutorials in the works.

Welcome to the forum!

My 2 cents; I would be most skeptical on trying to
restore a front end damaged bike for Track or street
for that matter unless I had reasonable engineering
and 'Bike' geometry as well as perhaps a bit of
metallurgy background.
As others mentioned pictures yes, more photos,
though I being one that lacks the above mentioned
skills might still not be sure of what actual
structural damage has occurred.
I'm not saying this is a bad idea to bid on the
bike, I don't have that answer, but for me I'd
be wondering if it is going to cost more
for me to make the bike 'safe' than just finding
a 'decent' used bike with clean title, and whether I
would be able to get the geometry of the
front end right again, (assuming the front end
damage is extensive), however if it's just cosmetic
damage, that changes everything.

I moved to Colorado in 1979. I started driving for the largest Paper Company in the Rocky Mtn Region. My company had 60% of the business while 6 other paper companies fought over the 40%. Since I owned a motorcycle I was always interested in Bikes/parts. There were 2 main recycle (junkyards) for Bikes. DUMP (Denver used motorcycle parts) and Steele Salvage. Then I found out about Police dept auctions, usually every 30 days. Most wrecked Bikes have front forks damaged. I remember bidding up to $300 on a wrecked FJ1100 Yamaha with fork damage.
I bought a used 1986 Kawasaki Concours C10 in 1994. Kawasaki added higher handlebars in 1987 and I wanted a pair. They were $250 each new from Kawa. I called Steele Salvage and they had a wrecked 1990 and stored inside a large building. They let me take my tools and take the parts I wanted and I came back to the counter. They looked at what I had taken and charged $100.
I look at Copart stuff and Copart is the middleman for Insurance companies. Watch some of their auctions on YT. I'm following a used car dealer who buys cars, repairs them and sells them. NKY Auto on YT... https://www.youtube.com/@nkyauto
In the old days as motorcycles quit being popular people would just drop them off at Steele Salvage. They had a mass of Bikes the last time I visited. Now they rebuild Bikes and sell parts. Another place popped up is Imperial Bikes. They deal in Ducati and Aprilia. I went to them because they had a portable dyno I used for another Bike I was modifying. Delkevic Exhaust International Warehouse is in Denver, too.
For Copart vehicles I would talk to a used car dealer or body shop that might already be registered. I would think a wrecked ZX14 sells for less than $1000.

Today's aluminum frames crack than bend. You see a crashed A-frame, look at the engine mounts, rear part of the frame for cracks. Steel frames can mostly bend back straight these days.

Fastest clue to watch is the triple tree fork stops. They bend back, you'll need new upper and lower crowns.

Engine wise, look for the cases to be shaved down. Crank cover can be replaced. Cases are too much to rebuild.

Ass me how I know.
