While I truly believe that even the cheapest motorcycle specific oil of proper weight changed every 3k miles or so will give you more protection that you really need in the real world conditions, hence making all of these oil discussions absolutely unnecessary, I choose to go with Mobil1 motorcycle oil. I have noticed a difference in shifting/engine noise while trying different oils on different bikes, but really, never doubted the protection they provided. I am sure besides Mobil1, there are plenty of other oil out there which provide similar results (engine noise, shifting smoothness), but I choose Mobil1 since it is a well known company, top name car companies recommend its oil, and I don't think they are in a position to lie about their products or what they put in them.

I stayed away from Mobile 1 (haven't tried the motor cycle specific yet) from a bad experiance I had with it in a Buick with 90K miles on it - never used any oil, but when I switched to Moble 1 it used 4 quarts in a round trip to work and back (140 mi. ) just lucky I checked it when I got to work and had some extra oil with me. Probabbly had nothing to do with the oil, but left me gun shy - since then I have used Castrol synth exclusivly in my cycles and have been very satisfied with the looks of things when I have had the motors apart - usually for some performance up=grades.
I feel like Wilford Brimley in the diabetic commercials - change your oil -and change it often!.
Actually, modern motor oil (grade S or higher ) is one of the most extensively tested fluids on the planet, and almost any brand is just fine - personal preference (usually unjustified) is the biggest factor, and I have not heard of a oil related engine failure in 40 years, always something else.
Used to hang with a guy that swore by Royal Triton - because it was purple ! and he thoughtr it looked cool!.
I see now there is a "new" purple oil out on the TV, it must be better than anything else because it is purple! - I wonder what miracle properties purple dye contains? They make fuel perfume for the car boys ( check out a Summet catalog) so your exhaust can smell cool, I wonder if there is an untapped market for oil color kits so your oil can look "cool". yea, I think too much.....

I know...I'm a jerk.
I remember at one time when synthetic oil had just come on the market the theory was that you didn't have to change oil ever again. Just change the filter occassionally. Guess it didn't work that way.
I haven't switched to synthetic yet but in my BMW 1250 RT I used the cheapest bulk synthetic oil I could find. I figured if you have to change it anyway why pay more? Never had a problem. Now I'm rich.

From what I've read, sythetic Rotell is even better than Mobil 1 bike specific, plus it's $19.95 per gallon at Walmart.

Rotella 5w40 full synthetic is the cheapest ($19.50 at Walmart) synthetic oil you can buy that is JASO MA certified(good for wet clutches). Rotella's regular dino oil is certified Jaso ma for wet clutches too.

1 on Mobil 1 motorcycle oil on ZX-14, however, my old ZX-11 is still chummin in the car spec brew.
Hello Steven 14.
Am pleased to be back among ZX-14 riders and having discussions with you and the members from the "other" site as well as all the other members here.
What "car oil" do you use in your ZX-11?

I sell auto parts for a living (phone sales). We sell synthetic "car" oil. We keep having meetings with the oil manufacturers to enhance our oil "product knowledge".
So far We've met with Redline , Motul, Eneos and Lubro Moly.
All oils are 70-95% base oil (whether synthetic or dinosaur oil), and 5-30% additives. The additives, friction modifiers and viscosity improvers, cost the oil companies the most, so the oils that use the most additives are the most costly oils. Most bike oils avoid the friction modifiers unless it's intended for Harley and other dry clutch bikes. Car oils (synthetic mostly) are really not to be used in bikes with wet clutches(slipping).
People do it anyway and many times no slipping problems ever happen. Who knows why.

I have had no problems using Shell Rotella T, bought at Walmart, in my bikes.
I'm not rich so can't see spending $10 or more a quart for basically the same product. You have to realize that these specialty oils, marketed as motorcycle-specific, originate from the same stocks as all other oils. Think about it, would Amsoil and the others have their own oil wells? NO! They buy refined oil stocks from the biggies, formulated to their specifications, and put labels on. And then, because they're sold through a pyramid operation, the markups are fantastic. Every month, Amsoil sends me information on how to become a 'dealer' and make a lot of money like all the smiling faces in their brochure. It's such a con job.
Just remember this, all oil stocks are virtually identical and, in raw form, cost pretty much the same. What differentiates the oils sold to us are the additive packages, small amounts of inexpensive chemicals blended into the oils. The main difference between companies' products is the marketing structure that fits between the refinery and you.

I've had good performance with Motul(Kawachem)10/40 full syn.Royal Purple was okay as well, but I suspect it was a tad too slick...I was adding oil as the miles added up in the last month.Never had that happen before.Switched today to Motul 300V synester. Will see how this one performs...so far,a ride for about 65,70 miles...and she ran perfect and shifted sweet.Pleased right now.Engine noise?I don't get any strange noise(s)...never have.

I'm p____d with the price we have to pay here in British Columbia, Canada.I live in a north central area, and the local Cambodian Tire (Canadian Tire)store here wants $19.98 a Liter (just a hair over a quart) for Amsoil motorcylce, Mobil 1 is $17. I might be forced to buy the Rotella, as it's cheaper for a 5 gallon pale. Anyone from B.C here know of a better price and supplier, let me know!

I've been a Mobil 1 guy for years, used to run their 15-50 Trimester and 75-90 gear oil from Wally World in my Buell and Harleys I've since used Mobils 10-40 bike specific in our Jap bikes and Ducati "the wifes Monster 800 S2R" with good results. Well I just broke over and picked up a few gallons of Rotella T-6 thats going in the ZX-14 with 1449 miles on it, the wifes Duc and an 09 KLR 650 this weekend. Im tired of paying $10 a quart and this change will help me with my yearly Progressive bill.
