Bearing Locking Plate Loosens
04/25/26 11:40 AM

Hey, so apparently the plate that holds the input shaft loosens up from vibrations because it was under-torqued from factory? I tried searching on different forums about this subject but I haven't found much. Most of the information I'm getting is from two different youtube videos. I'm wondering if this is really that widespread as some comments say it is. I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't loctite the screws that hold the input shaft plate when upgrading my oil pump cover a couple weeks ago. Question is, should I go ahead and do this ASAP, or just wait till next oil change and check it then. My 14 doesn't really make any weird noises but I'd rather take care of it before it chips something. Thanks.

Early 'bearing locking plate' is 2 hole, later engines show a 3 hole. Both mention a locking agent to the screws. That's blue not red agent. 42 inch pounds is the torque. Video sounded terrible with the noise. Yours being quiet should not need inspection being those screws were tightened with the agent.

But for peace of mind I'd be on it to inspect. More like, unscrew the oil filler cap, move the whole clutch assembly back and forth and note excess movement. No move, no worry.

After 20yrs being on this forum, never came across the locking plate issue. New one on me.

Yeah I didn't know what the technical term of the part was, thanks. I'm going to do what you said and try to move the assembly via the oil filler cap, if there's any play, I'll take everything off and tighten/loctite the screws. I'm pretty new to 14 ownership and I want to try and knock out any possible failure point.

Not something you need to do ASAP. Do the brocks/SAW OUTLAW clutch mod, oil plate/pump gear mod, and loctite those screws all in one go.

I have APE upgraded springs and oil pump cover. Decided against the gear mod and pressure relief valve since all I have done to my bike is a full exhaust + tune. Don't do much dig racing either and I don't feel any noticeable slipping. I think I'm going to stick to the stock setup for now since from my understanding its more catered to road racing.

I had a few free hours so I decided to check the plate. There was no play with the shaft and the screws holding the plate felt really solid. I decided to leave it alone.

The gear mod and relief valve are harder jobs to do. I would think if it's a Gen2 bike, you'll be okay. Gen1 bikes are the ones that tend to have pressure issues. If your bike has lasted this long, it's probably not going to suddenly fail from oiling issues now. Would've already happened

Yeah, I heard its a PITA to take the gear off. 2013 ZX14R ABS, about 13,000 miles. It has a full system + Ivan flash. Honestly pulls really strong. Only thing that kinda puts me off is the lopey idle and slight vibrations at 4-6k.
