Having just retired from the automotive sector Federal Emissions standards warranty the PCM/ECM and catalytic converters for 8 years or 80,000 miles whichever comes first. It goes with the vehicle not just the original owner. That being said I'm not sure about motorcycles, but I'd suspect they had to meet the same standards.

Thanks. Ford. There you go, Kruz. Worth a phone call. Or call a dealer first. Then call CARB or Air research board and ask if it relates to bikes also. This way you have a backup knowing it applies to bikes too.

Thanks guys, I've been doing my home work and the consensus on the S1000RR forum is I will have to either take it to a BMW dealer and pay them to install a new ECU and have it paired to the ignition immobilizer and TFT or I can have my ECU cloned by someone offering that service for a Plug-N-Play solution. Essentially cloning is you provide them with a new or serviceable ECU plus your old damaged unit and they then transfer the data from the old one over to the new one, including VIN number, immobilizer code etc.

Well Hubinator, 7 weeks, four new ignition coils, four new sparkplugs, a new ECU and $1890 cash later the BMW is back up and running. Turns out I had a local BMW tuning guru virtually in my backyard, about 20 minutes down the road. He cloned my ECU for $750 including a serviceable ECU, confirmed #2 and #4 coil drivers in the old ECU were shot as we had speculated. So a single bad coil ended up taking out the coils and ECU, expensive lesson. Just took her out for my daily 36 mile loop, runs a like a raped ape, clone ECU is identical right down to the mileage and clock setting.

Happy to hear that, Kruz. Close to a 1000 or more for new tires for the 14 and ST. Getting old and weak as we speak LOL.

Had to air blade the tire off the 14's rear rim, then hacksawed the rest half across the tire. Came right off. Tires showed up today so it's a little garage time in the morning before I sweat it up come late mornings. Still to hot for me.

So it's a hot black coffee following my out to the garage and depends if I pull the front end off and grease the front steering bearings, I'll be on the 14 for the weekend for sure. Been a lot of months since I last rode it.

New oil and filter, chain lubed. The little stuff. Could not find the nail in the tire until I got my hand inside to take a sweep. Could not find an entrance point from the outside or I would have plugged it up from the outside. But both profiles looked flat in their centers so it was time anyway.

A lesson learned for sure about the coil eating the ECU. Almost wants me to wire out a remote ground from the harness, but as I think of it, the other wire can't jump over to ground from the harness connector. But then again, ground was not connected up so makes me wonder. Just thinking out loud here.

Hub the ignition coil failures are very common on the K67, typically a matter of swapping out the dead coil, about $234 and you're back in business.

I just had the bad luck when mine failed that it was arcing the secondary back into the primary side which then backwashed the ECU with a high voltage surge taking out the drivers.

I had only one bad coil but decided to proactively change all of them out along with all the sparkplugs which actually looked OK.

It could have been much, much worse, local BMW dealer wanted between $4000-$5000 total parts and labor for new coils, plugs and a new ECU and then a reflash back to the Bren Stage 1 tune.

My local guy provided an exact duplicate of my ECU for $750, including installation of the ECU on the bike and adaptation of the key immobilizer and TFT screen using the GS911 diagnostic tool.

Bren Tune was not affected as he copied my ECU download 1 for 1 to the new ECU, essentially a plug and play solution.

I was thinking what are the odds one of the few guys on the planet capable of doing this crap was 20 minutes away from my home?
