Pingel electric shifter works nice

Put the Pingel Electric shifter on shifts up great but I always down shift with foot. Have a plate and screws in foot hard to shift up. Definitely makes it nice when launching so don't need to bring foot up to shift when wheeling through 1st gear. Helped me a lot on stock ZX14R

It's definitely a game changer. I don't know why they didn't put a quick shifter on THE ZX14R from factory

Make sure you've got your kill times large. My air shifter's kill time was set way too low and it chewed up the dogs pretty good. Not worth having to scrap the whole trans for a couple mils

There's no way I know to choose kill times other than to ask others. I didn't get much experience in before banging my gear dogs real bad a couple times. I can say 70 mls is probably too brief, it will miss at high rpm and heavy load and stick between gears. Clutch shift up, DO NOT try to shift back down. That's what was really hard on my gear dogs. It was a lot of years ago but from what I recall, 90 mls worked fine although there was a pronounced jerk as it hit the next gear. I'm pretty sure I can clutch shift that fast and it's perfectly smooth. I was using a foot quickshifter. An electric or air shifter is probably more reliable. Some had better results with a foot quickshifter than I did but I'd get lots of advice before using something like this again.

I finally was able to purchase a Pingel Electric Shifter that was second hand for over half of what it cost to purchase it brand new. Install took about 3 hours which included removing fairings and gas tank to gain access to the battery compartment. Over the past few years I’ve been running a heal tech QS and it’s definitely a nice foot activated QS. However, the Pingel just takes shifting to another level. Keep in mind I only use quick shifting above 6K rpm’s when I’m really getting into the throttle, and the Pingel shifts much better than my foot with the heal tech, and way better than I can clutch/foot shifting.

The ability to shift using only a button for up/downshifting is in my book game changing, and I wish I would’ve went this route sooner……but I just couldn’t justify paying close to $1,500.00 for it. It does work well when just cruising around town at lower rpm’s but I still prefer to use clutch/foot shifting in this situation as I did when I was running the heal tech. I just wanted to chime in and give my take on this shifter since I’ve been wanting one for years and finally got a chance to snag one at a price that I could handle.

When I get the turbo bike together someday, this is the shifter I'd like to go with. Can you explain a bit in detail what you like better about the Pingel shifts compared to the Healtech shifts?

First it allows me to focus more on my tuck when doing high speed runs…one less thing to worry about when rowing through the gears when foot shifting opposed to now only having to just push a button with my thumb over the button. Secondly is that every shift is consistent(force applied) taking out of the equation of a missed shift when foot shifting where you might not apply enough force to trigger a shift for any given gear. I like that all I have to do is pin the throttle and push a button and every shift is consistent. Also if I’m doing pulls from a dead stop, I don't have to worry about bringing my foot up quickly to shift to prevent redlining the motor for the 1-2 shift. May I state that this is the first system I’ve owned where it has no problems shifting from 1st to 2nd where the throw is much longer. It shifts from 1-2 just as seamless as it does for 2-6. Whereas, with previous QS systems I always used the clutch for the 1-2 shift and the QS thereafter.

Your observations are extremely helpful, siroht. I think I have to have one of my own! This really seems like it would be the best shifter for what the 14 was made to do best. I still enjoy a foot shifter for more road racing style riding but I had issues with the one I bought for my Gen1. One serious mistake with clicking out of false neutral puts wear on the gear dogs equivalent to decades of normal clutch shifting. Basically, "don't try to shift back down, click it up and you should be fine."

Thanks again for the input on the electric shifter, siroht. Hate to go on forever again but now seems like a good time for a quickshifter safety share. Whatever shifter you use, if it's missing shifts, it might not stick in false neutral. It can kick back down to the gear you meant to shift out of. I never used my strain gauge foot shifter from first to second gear thinking second to third and higher would be gentle enough on the gearbox. One of the last times I rode my Gen1, I nailed it WOT from 2nd into third. The shift stuck between gears for a fraction of a second, the engine hit the rev limiter, the gearbox kicked back to 2 and I did a legitimate two o'clock wheelie, maybe a one. The bike had a +4 rear sprocket and it pointed skyward. This was at the top of second gear so I was doing at least 90 mph. Real eye opener. If a quickshifter isn't working perfectly, I'd say don't push it.

In 2005 or so , I bought a Holeshot Performance Electric Pushbutton shifter, ran it for 10 yrs Over 40,000 miles including drag racing every year. 25,000 Of those miles were with turbo installed on my ZRX1200 then switched to my ZX14R in 2015 . I then combined it with the Schnitz Shift light for auto shift which ran until 2024 when something finally broke . It was the shift star. I think the reason it broke was the cable or the slide mechanism moved slightly which was not letting the shift arm make a complete pull. I shud have been checking for something like that but I did not even think about it . I had teh pushbutton rigged by horn switch and could turn off auto shift and just use button for street .
It is still on the bike and will be in use once again.

Oh I forgot to add that my Pingel unit is wired to accept an auxiliary output for auto shifting . When I purchased the Pingel I owned a 3 wire Raptor shift light, and I wanted to take advantage of the auto shift feature so I ordered another Raptor shift light with the auxiliary output to auto shift at a desired RPM. It arrived yesterday and I got it installed and I thought button pushing was game changing! Auto shifting is like cheating when drag/roll racing. Just twist to full throttle, tuck and hold on and it shifts spot on at 11.1K RPM. No more accidentally bumping up against the rev limiter because of timing.
