Anyone have a Vortex gas cap?
03/09/12 2:42 PM

As part of my black out work I'd like to change from the stock cap and silver base.
The Vortex looks better than the stock set up. Black anodized isn't a perfect match for the Diablo black but it's an improvement.
I'd also like to get away from the filling hassles the stock cap causes. I've never liked how the cap lifts back instead of to the front. Makes filling while lifting up the rubber fumes container (California) more difficult. I assume the Vortex is a 1/4 turn type? Not quite as convenient having a cap to lay somewhere but no big deal.
Anyone have a pic on their bike? Does it just bolt on and you don't need to replace a seal or something? Thanks for any help.

Just bolts on. The base and cap each come with their own seals.

I assume the Vortex is a 1/4 turn type?

2 full revolutions, from the position in the pic, to remove.

Have a LighhTech from OPP Racing.

You do replace the seal and that comes with it.

The LighTech is a quarter turn. Press the spring loaded cap and twist. Spring is quite stiff. Is not going to come off unless you take it off.

Take off the OEM screws two back, one front. Open the key lock to remove the ring and the cap--all one piece.

careful you do not lose that little gasket that seal the breather. You see it on my palm. That thing could fall in the gas tank so watch out.

Half the weight of OEM

Dogo, Rook, thanks for the help. I appreciate it!
Rook, you got pics for everything! Are those part of your "how to" tutorials? I searched for Vortex before making my topic but found no help.
QUESTION...that little breather seal you show in your hand, it looks like it pops into the base at about 7:00 as it is shown in your hand (5:00 if on the tank). If so, then when you remove the base and cap just be sure to take them off toward the rear of the tank and that seal can't drop in. Right?
Thanks for mentioning that. That would make a simple job a PITA.

Not yet. I planned to make a How-To--- unless you beat me to it.

Yes. That is it. There are three thread holes for the screws and couple other holes. One is an overflow and the other is a breather to let air in the tank to displace used gas (I think). IDK which is which but the one at the back of the cap on you right (as you are removing the cap) has the little gasket. Mine stayed in place when I took the OEM cap off. It fell out after some handling of the part. I doubt if you will have a ptroblem as long as you are aware of that little gasket and lift the OEM cap off to the rear---and be ready to turn the cap over and catch that little devil before it rolls away into some dusty corner somewhere. lol

That would make a simple job a PITA.

Yep. This one really is a 20 minuter.

I was obnoxious with my photographs again, wasn't I.

Mine isn't even a Vortex. I think the Vortex pics were of value.

I'd love to get the LighhTech but I'm always thinking someone may F with my bike and put something in the tank when I travel overnight somewhere.....But it looks real sexy not to mention I'm sire it’s a whole lot easier to put fuel in her without the cap being there.....

Really?... I worry about my bike getting stolen, and therefore always get a ground level room, park my bike (covered, outta sight outta mind) right outside the window and leave it cracked so I can hear... but never really worried about vandalism.

The 1/4 turn cap requires a bit of muscle to press in and turn. It would be a more committed sort of punk who would take the thing off. I plan to put a black piece of tape over the PUSH/open/close arrows so it does not look so easy. I will prolly just stick a 2.5" wide band of masking tape over the cap if I leave it outside the grocery store. I think that will be enough deterent. I park for extended periods with a cover on the bike. That is that OUT of sight out of mind factor Dogo was talking about.

I will agree, a key lock gas cap is a lot more practical but I've never been less practical with anything in my life than I have my bikes.

LighTech makes one very similar to the Vortex and it has a special wrench to torque the cap in. I can't imagine that would hold up for the life of the bike but it is a middle ground between safe and fun. Just don't run low on gas without your wrench handy. I would carry it under seat.

These EvoTechs are sick as all fing hell.

Too bad they do not make one for the 14. Look like they may weigh a bit more possibly but I plan to get a black or black/gold for the busa.

I like the look of the Vortex best. It has the most simple look. To me, the gas cap should be inconspicuous so nothing is taken away from the tank/bodywork. I also like that it doesn't force you to make another part of your bike an advertisement. It does say "Vortex" on it but it doesn't jump out at you. Only complaint I have is they don't give you colored screws. Guess I'll have to paint mine. If I had my way the factory cap would be under a flush mounted cover. Just flip it up, or press down and it flips up.
I'm just not one of those who like's manufacturers logo's and "ZX14" on every aftermarket part I buy.
And thanks again Rook for the info.

I like the look of the Vortex best.

Also nice to have it flush with the tank top. I doubt the cookie jar lid caps like the LighTech interfere much with a tuck but you know it won't if the cap is not sticking up at all.

Looks like they may use the OEM screws. I ordered a black screw kit for my LT but I am thinking about painting them. They do not make an orange screw kit(so as to clash better).

Guess I'll have to paint mine.

Good idea. Save yourself $8 for three stinkin screws.

Don't prefer painting 'cuz the paint chips easily, even if I try baking. But something like these screws shouldn't matter 'cuz I'll install 'em once, fix any chips and never bother 'em again.
Maybe if you can find a high temp paint and follow the baking procedure the DIY job may be more chip resistant. I've tried baking but never with actual high temp paint. Also, I just learned today that one manufacturers method to cure the high temp paint is this 3 step process: Bake at 250 for 30 minutes, let cool. Then bake at 400 for 30 minutes, let cool. Then 600 for 30 minutes. Not sure this is a universal method, probably depends on what exact type of paint you're using, but maybe it works better than the 1 step method I tried before of just putting the part in the oven at around 300 for about 20 minutes. Problem with the 3 step above is our oven only goes to 500.
Oh well, I'll experiment some more.

Hey, you got those bitchin' new wheels on yet or are you still sleepin' with 'em.

DogoZX or anyone...did you happen to notice the venting on the Vortex?
I want to buy the Vortex model you show in the pic (CP403K) but there's no mention of venting in the spec's. Other models Vortex sells DO include venting info and how their venting is "better" now.
I have to assume the Vortex works fine but have you had any issues with venting/fuel flow?

The Vortex has a vent... Can't say that it is better than the one on the factory cap, but it works just as well.

Its a great looking cap for sure but going on long rides and if it rains and the bike isn't coveried I see it filling up with water over night at the hotel.....if it wasn't for that I'd be buying one!

How would water enter the Vortex any easier than the stock cap? Any water that gets in should go down the drain hole. Correct?

RE: Anyone have a Vortex gas cap?

I decided against buying the Vortex. I wanted the "classic" Vortex, first generation or whatever you call it.
But I kept reading about poor venting and leaks. Maybe some guys have good ones but I'd probably get a leaker. Even in that video in this thread the guy has trouble talking up the new V3 without making the classic design sound bad. The classic I assume had finer threads that could cause cross-threading on top of leaks and poor venting. It's funny as he talks about the new and improved coarser cap thread but you can see he never gets the cap threaded in right as he's talking to you. Another thing about the older Vortex was the cap was hard for some to grip because of the shallow turn handle.
Anyway, I was disappointed because I liked the all black Vortex and the new V3 is too mechanical looking for me.
I looked around and decided on this.....

It's from Roaring Toyz. Found it for $68 at Dennis Kirk.
It's billet. About 1/2 the weight. Anodized black. 1/8th turn. Check valve for venting.
You flip up the lever as you would the stock cap and turn 1/8th to the left. Opening is about 2" diameter. I just recieved it today and it looks nice. Operates smoothly. I didn't install it yet because I had to work on the bolts they provided first. Sanded down the numbers on top the heads and made them smooth. Then I painted them black. Will mount tomorrow when cured.
Funny I decided on it because I wanted all black to kind of hide the cap. The center is chrome, about 2" diameter. But it looks OK with the reflective Kawasaki badges on the tank and I do have polished wheels and stainless cans and a few other small chrome bits. Hope it's a good choice.
