New Battery Coming
02/09/10 11:45 AM

Not that I want to encourage anybody to visit a competing forum <grin>... But there is a thread here that might be of interest.

For those of you who don't know of "dubious", he has been selling hardware to mount a ZX-10 front fender to a ZX-14 for some time, and also selling the extremely light but fairly pricey Speedcell batteries.

Very trustworthy guy... -bg

I'm not familiar with these "Speedcell" batteries, nor am I familiar with Dubious' batteries. I just read through the thread on BikeLand.

Quick question: Are there any other benefits other than weight loss for a street ridden ZX14 used for commuting, riding the twisties, and normal sport-touring?

Longevity?
Reliability?
User-Friendliness?
More power for accessories?

KneeScraper:

You should probably ask dubious these questions over on the Bikeland forum. I don't know the answers. I just wanted to let the members here know about this, because it looked interesting.

I would think that a loss of 10 pounds of weight would have a positive effect in several ways.

I may get one. If I do, I'll post my impressions. -bg

Hello Gents.
Thanks for the kind words Mr Gordon!
Its been a long winter away from my riding friends and I have been real busy with work,

here is some info on the battery, and how you can contact me to and purchase a battery.
I will try to stay current with this post, and will check in every few days as well.
I would like to answer all technical questions via the boards, so the info is shared and not repeated.

If you have specific purchase questions, please use my email, as it goes to my blackberry and I can respond sooner.

so , here is some info on the batteries:

7.5 A 360 Ca

Hard case 5 Amp 240 Ca

Equivalent or better components and materials than Speedcell, at a fraction of the cost!

*Handle up to 50 amp charge, or trickle charge. Higher charge is better.
*Can be used with conventional charging system and streetbike electronics, or on total loss alternator less systems.
*Will handle over 1000 complete cycles (complete discharge to full charge)

*Not suitable for use below freezing temperatures due to zero internal resistance.
*At close to freezing temps, it should be warmed at room temperature, or load put on it to warm it up.
*again.... not suggetsed for below freezing temeperatures unless you warm or store the battery at room temperature.

*Cut 10 lbs off your bike, and free up space as well.

5 A is 240 CA
suggested for stock compression up to 1400 CC inline 4 cylinders
weighs 1lb 8oz approximately.
$175 USD includes continental USA shipping , and paypal fee's

7.5 A is 360CA
suggested for Vtwins, or high compression inline engines to 1800 cc
Weighs approx 2 lbs 4 oz
$220 USD includes continental USA shipping and paypal fee's

10 A is 480 CA
as powwerful as your import car battery!
suggested for 124 cubic inch S&S harley engines and such
Really not necessary for any inline 4 cyl engine
weighs only 3lbs
$270 USD includes continental USA shipping and paypal fee's

These prices are already rock bottom MSRP prices with appropriate charges already in the stated price.
For comparison Speed cell 5A retail for $260 plus shipping plus paypal fee's... $280 approx.

PAYMENT INFO:
Send payment to eldubois @ telus.net (no spaces in paypal account)
When you send payment include what payment is for, board username, real name , email if different, and phone number for contact or correspondance purposes.

https://www.paypal.com/ca/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_home&country_lang.x=true

Orders in USA will be shipped within 1 week direct from manufacture.
Canadian or international orders are enroute, and will be shipped in approx 2 weeks, meaning they are almost 4 weeks away from your door.

CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:

RE: New Battery Coming

It is an excellent lightweight lifetime alternative to the standard lead acid battery in your daily ride,
.....with one caveat, it rapidly looses cranking amps when the battery temp drops to freezing or sub freezing temps

although they do get lazy at freezing temps, it doesn't lose the charge over winter/ cold. Once temps rise again, cranking amperage comes back.

In other words if it is not cranked and depleted when its cold, it will return to normal cranking capacity when warm temps return

* +5C or higher and it works awesome.
*Will easily outlast the lifetime of many lead acid batteries
* no seasonal maintenance
* looses less than 1% charge per month, if it was full charged in the fall it will start your bike in the spring
*will not freeze, no need to remove for winter
*will not overheat
*does not need trickle charge, no need to charge over winter
*will take 50 A charger, accepts full charge in 15 minutes
* save 10 lbs
* likely never replace your battery again
*will very likely outlast the life of your bike

The 360 7.5 A and 480 10A do not come in a hard case yet.
They are wrapped like the speedcells.

The battery is sweet, but pricey and a little limiting for those of us still experiencing serious winter weather. I may be wrong, but aren't the factory batteries a little more tolerant of below-freezing weather or am I way off?

blue07: Don't you find it hard to see folks in your mirrors when they're directly attached to the bike like that? I'm 6'3" 260 and find I have just enough room to see people using the mirrors' stock locations. I can't imagine having them closer. Just curious. I test-rode a Ducati 998S BiPosto and couldn't see anything for this very reason. Felt like a gorilla on a tricycle. I'm losing weight steadily though - perhaps that's the secret? You're thin and I'm not? ::8^)::

Actually guys-they ARE pigspotter mirrors. And they just shipped today. As far as seeing behind.....I rely on head checks to see the things around me-not my mirrors. They're ONLY for looks, that's why I got em.I like the sleek appearance and carbon.I suppose I'll be able to glance in em and get a visual of something nearby behind. But it's cool-I NEVER rely on the mirrors.Even my stock ones-ya-visibility is good...But....you never know what's creepin on your right or left-specially if you've been payin attention to the road and rollin on.Bout the only thing I looked for in my stock mirrors was that famous flashing blue and red light pattern! Those LP mirrors are nice-but it was the style that I wanted to change. Thanks for the link though Scott-Lockhart Phillips has some quality stuff on there.Sounds stupid-maybe it is-but I really don't want to see a cage slammin into me from behind,if that ever was to happen.I'd rather not know about it.I do watch behind when I'm stopped-but there wouldn't be much a guy could do to escape-other than jump off the bike and get out of the way-IF you saw it in time.I wouldn't even try slippin through stopped traffic-especially with a 3000lb missle comin at me at 60 mph.

RE: New Battery Coming

Hey guys,
If you ride temps above 40F, then go with a 5A battery
Simply if you are crazy enough to ride temps below 40F, then get the 7.5 battery.
If you ride below 25F, stick with the lead acid batteries.

when you compare prices for weight loss, it is on eof THE BEST ways to lose weight.
Those carbon fiber body parts will only shave 1 lb off the bike with exception of a lightweight fuel tank, and even the stock tank only weighs 13 lbs, so it would be impossible to drop 10 lbs off the tank with the hardware and pump installed .... and the catalyst tank is $1000 with only 4lbs drop.

Next is wheels, CF wheels only cost $4000+ so good luck with that.

When it comes down to dollars per pound of NECESSITY weight cut, the battery can not be beat.
Even if you replaced every bolt and axle on your bike, with Titanium, you would not drop 10 lbs, but you would drop $10,000!

as far as pricing, the new lithium battery I am selling, is 30% more affordable than the speedcells I used to sell!

the 5A speedcell is $260 retail, and the 5A I am selling now retails for $175 shipped and pp fee's included!

These are the single best weight loss for the $

I have owned CF panels, and there was 1.3 lb weight loss for $600 in parts... but they did look cool....
so if bling is your thing bestem makes the nicest CF BTW.... haha

cheers,
Lyle

oh and to prove I am not full of BS, here are pics of my CF in garage 3 years ago, that never made it to my bike....
I sold them as they weren't performance effective for the $

dubious...since this 5a battery looks to be considerably smaller than the oem battery, do you make a special tray for it to sit in? if not what is some of the ways youve done or seen that keeps the 5a from moving around in the battery compartment? and will the 5a be enough for my hids and leds? thanks

RE: New Battery Coming

For mounting I had drilled small holes in the bottom of the stock tray ( as well I cut allot off the excess stock tray for mine too, and then zip tied the battery down.)
The 5A battery has more juice than a stock battery.

When you are concerned about the accesories, you should be thinking alternator, unless you power them with the bike not running.

The alternator must be able to recharge the battery reserve after it has started the bike, as well as power all the accessories while it runs.

The 5A battery is an excellent and superior replacement for one the stock battery in every way, except in below freezing temps.

That is a great weight savings and the really cool thing is that it is higher up weight than most weight trimming mods. I want one of these batteries but I have to wait until the stocker gets weak. Weird when you want parts to ware out so you cam get better stuff to replace.

Hey dub, if you talk to Mass, tell him we want him back.

unfortunately I am not set up for credit cards, I can do paypal though.

PRIMARILLY, I just do custom work locally, a few bike projects a year, and the small mail order bit.
Its a side job I enjoy, and pass some savings on to a few good people who are tired of being raped.

Shipping will be $10 USD more to Canada, for total $185 USD for 5A battery.
My paypal is eldubois at telus dot net

That is also my email if you want to reach me.

No worries on the BST wheels mate.

Thanks,
Lyle

Unfortunately I can not do better on pricing, and can not do anything for you on a group buy. Its already awesome pricing and meant to be that way to make them more affordable for the masses.

I could do group buy on Pazzo levers, or clear alternatives smoked signals and integrated tail lights.
I can do group buy on my fender brackets too, especially if they are being shipped to one address, stateside, then distributed from there.

Individual shipping from Canada is expensive!
