RE: Shorai Lithium Batteries?

^^^Since I have been paying attetion to this stuff(which is about the last 3 years) there have been at least two or 3 super lightweight batteries I have read about(Masszx14 had all of them). There was the small gray onr that I believe someone has posted pics of on this thread. There was a speedcell that many say won't work for street riding because cold cranking is nonexistent. Then we had those little cylinder shaped batts that were bound in shrinkwrap with some wires coming out. Now we have the Shorai which actually seems to meet the demands of both street riding and sport/track riding.

Batteries is big business. That is what is going to make the electric powered vehicle revolution begin. Give it a few years and there might well be something smaller and more powerful to provide power for your bike. In fact, that might be the technology that provides all the power for the bike before too long.

According to Dogo,,,,not a commodity available to private investors.

Dad needs new battery for MR-2. Does Shorai make a car battery?

Guess I'm glad I got mine for the 14 when I did.

Car batteries will be the next big thing.

Rook that MR-2 turbo must be a low compression motor 10 bucks says the 18 AH will start it. I would bet more but I'm thinking it's a 400 cranking amp batt. If your batt is not installed in your bike,,,,, ???????

Yep... if you can find one, buy it.
Mine sat, installed in my bike, all winter. Then, it got some abuse testing lighting and what not while I was putting my bike together... and when it came time to fire my bike up, it did it without any sort of hesitation or struggle. The stock battery would have been dead unless it was on a trickle.

Motorcycle Consumer News has an article this month on the back cover on these batteries. Review was very positive. I have to admit I stopped reading this forum awhile back, so this maybe old info. Did not see anything recent about the article, so hopefully I am not repeating. They mentioned turning on lights for a few seconds before cranking. Seems this gets some electron flow, which helps when battery is cold.

If anyone would like to read it, I'd be happy to scan and email it to ya. I will be doing this upgrade soon as my wallet allows me too. Layed off last month, so funds are a bit tight right now.

With the turntech that step was a must. No need with this bad boy. Stupid power. Love it.

Agreed, I found out I don't need any battery pre-heat here in Texas, 46 F is about my personal limit for riding anyway and the Shorai provides lightning fast starts at those temps. There will be competition soon and with it, I predict prices may even come down and of course availability will go up. Lead/Acid batteries will become museum curios in a few years, Yuasa better take notice and start investing in Lithium. Shorai apparently underestimated the demand for these critters, I imagine they're working overtime over there in Hung Chow to rectify that situation. Anybody call Shorai to find out when the next batch arrives?

Rook has a dead battery, luckily he had the Shorai still in the box and sounds like problem solved.

Good to hear the details on these batteries. I was worried about starting in the cold, since I ride whenever I can even in the winter when the roads are in decent shape. I was pretty pissy last week when my new Yuasa went dead with just a few cranks on the starter while getting my HID's installed. I had to push the 14 up a hill twice to get her running. Didn't have electric to plug in the charger where I was working. Although I seem to think that the Dealer never charged my battery fully. My bike sat on the showroom floor from May of last year until March when I picked it up. Anyhow, I'll be getting a Shorai!!! (After a PCv :)

You and me both. Damn, I would have thought a dead stock battery would have been a simple problem to diagnose. Don't we have some sort of battery Icon that comes up on the multi-function meter? (maybe not because if the battery is dead, how is the multifunc gonna display it?) File this one away everyone: If you turn the key and get an electronic ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka......from ECU area and instrument cluster + all instruments flash like crazy.....that's your battery. It's shot. get a new one. I have not been paying attention to my voltmeter on the bike so I don't know what that was telling me. I Always have my meter set on CURRENT mileage.

I have the smaller size 14Ah Shorai battery (LFX14A2-BS12. Only problem is that because that battery is so tiny, the + cable sits so low in the box that it is interfering with the metal retainer that holds the battery tray. Seems like I would have to do some mighty drastic bends in the cables or cut cable and recrimp contact in order to get it to fit and I do not want to commit to that just yet. I have some other ideas. The simplest thing is to get a block of foam to put in the tray so the Shorai is the same height as the stocker, then ziptie it together or even use factory battery strap. Prolly no room for a "sneaky Pete," Rom. Not unless I do some permanent mods to the cables.

The important thing is that the battery works and the 14 is in great shape.

All good. I must admit. I was vibrating when I was reading your post over there. I did not know you had Not installed. YIKES.

I have not been paying attention to my voltmeter on the bike so I don't know what that was telling me.

I pretty sure no one looks at it. If your charging system does not work you will find out soon enough lol.

Now, what about those 17/45 gears ?

I'll give my report as soon as I get the Shorai in. Should be a couple weeks.

Darned if I wasn't right on the money there. The Shorai is in and it fired the 14 up lickity split-that's after sitting on the shelf, no float charger, for the last 2 months (Feb 10 is the date on my Shorai reciept).

Volmeter on the bike read 13v with Shorai in. It fired up but I do not think it was any stronger than the stock (which gave me great servive in 15-90 F weather). I have a vid of the initial cold start. About the same as the warm start that immediately followed. After warming up and getting off fast idle, the voltage dropped to 13. Same as when Iput it in. Looks like the Shorai lost NO voltage sitting on the shelf for 2 months, indoors. I will post vids of the starts as well as my dead battery instrument cluster f**ck when I get a chance to get into my footage.

I'm happy. Hope the Shorai lasts. Really glad I snapped that sucker up when it was available or I would be having to buy a brand new old school battery for the same $$$ I paid for the Shorai. Thanks for spreading the word Kruz and Dogo.

Now, what about those 17/45 gears ?

You know, Roms......that ain't knocking my socks off either. A little more pull but not as snappy as I expected. It seems to run about 500 rpm faster than stock gearing at most normal street speeds. That's a bit more snap but not as much of a change as I was anticipating. Maybe that is good because I was afraid I was going to have to switch back to some taller gearing. The big blue sprocket looks great. Maybe when i get it up into 5-7K and higher it will scare me a bit more??

No need to thank me... Kruz did the leg work... I was just a sheep.

BTW...
Before bolting my bike together, for what should be the final time until November, I added some more foam... just incase.
Here is what the "final" install of my Shorai looks like:

Volmeter on the bike read 13v with Shorai in. It fired up but I do not think it was any stronger than the stock

Rook it's not supposed to be. Remember it's reading volts not amps. If your bikes meter reported 19 volts you would have a whole new prob. When your bikes running the on board meter will confirm your charging system is working. With all your electrics turned on you do not want to be running below 12v for very long or you battery will soon be dead, No matter what kind. So i guess if you were looking at your meter You may have seen your battery not taking a charge but I doubt it. I'm sure if you place a meter on that same battery now it will still read 12 volts. Try it ?
