RE: how do i install a chain??
07/02/11 1:37 AM

A few years ago, I was offered a bunch of free firewood ... It was all in unsplit rounds. So, in the morning, I went out to the guy's place and loaded up every last piece that I could lift on my own. That night, the guy called me and asked why I'd left some of the wood. I told him that all the pieces I'd left were too large for me to lift into my truck on my own and I'd be back in a few days with help to get the rest of it... The next day the old man showed up at my place with all the rest of the wood loaded up in his truck.... he'd split it.

Any shop worth a shit should have a masterlink for ya... and if it was the difference between riding or stayin' home this weekend... I'd run a clip style.

I look forward to seeing the glass work you've done to your bike. Sounds cool.

i took your advice about photobucket and i put the pics on of the piece i made ive got a lot of sanding left to do but with an hour here and there it should be done in a week. Im a bigger guy like i said im 6' 7" and im in the gym most of my life lol so i made this to give the bike a bigger look so it will fit me better also when i extended the bike i did drop it as most people do because when you extend it it raises the center of the bike. I would really love your feedback on it because when i set it on the bike im not too sure how i feel about it, my neighbors think it will look great once its done. Ive deff never seen anyone with anything like it. From now until next summer im going to go nuts with fiberglass i want my bike to be huuuuuge just real big and beefy looking. Heres the link to the site so you can see it. www.photobucket.com/bruceandkimberly

Well, to be honest with you, I think the wings will throw off the lines of the bike. JMHO... Have to see it complete and on the bike to really jugde though. I do, however, think I see and understand the direction you are going with your bike. I think it's cool how we all buy bikes that are basically the same from the factory, and turn them into completely different, personalized machines.

do you think if i got the clip master link it would hold up for the weekend
Good question????? Your guess is as good as mine. I would get several opinions because if it lets go, you are going down. The chain almost never flies off, it wraps in the rear wheel and locks it or it winds around the counter sprocket and carves a hole in the engine.

I can tell you that out of the two times I can remember the topic of clip master links being discussed, they were not recommended for street use. Temporarily, I guess I would be so nervous I would have to ride like a granny and get off top look at it 300 times before I started to feel comfortable with it. I'd ask around about temporary use of the clip link.

whats the torq spec for the axle nut??

Torque - Rear Axle Nut: 127 N·m (13.0 kgf·m, 94 ft·lb)

making like an adapter for the foot peg plates im going to cut them in a cool design the send them to a shop the next town over and have them powder coated.

Saw something just like that for the 14 but it was to raise and set back the stock pegs.

I have Vortex rearsets that might do the same job for you but as you can see, they are not going to change foot position dramatically, IMO. I have them all the way up and back. It is very noticeable but not night and day to me. If you only need a half inch longer reach, something like this can be purchased for about $300 and it will be made of billet. Weight is about same as the stock parts that come off the bike.

dogo i was thinking the same thing as far as throwing the lines off thats why i wanted your opinion it never hurts to get someones opinion. If i dont like it im sure i could sell it on ebay for a couple hundred bucks someone will want it just because no one else will have something like that. Rook my foot pegs need to go way lower and way back as i mentioned im big and tall so im trying to give my bike a bigger look with making my own farings and pegs i dont wanna look like im crammed up on my bike. I love making my own things because when people ask where i got it i can take pride in saying that i made it myself! Ya know? ill deff post pics when its all done so you guys can give me ablunt and honest opinion. Dogo i looked at the pics of your bike and im preally impressed its not often that someone does a bike or car the right way, that is def the right way to do it IMO GREAT JOB! This winter im going nuts with fiberglass i dont race and dont have the desire to really. Im going to add the double bottle nitrous but thats really for looks and the purge system. Do either of you guys have a detailed way to install a dual flame thrower kit?? I think that would look pretty neat. Thanks a lot for the torq spec i wanna do everything the right way. My replacement chain hasnt come in yet i cant wait to ride again its been a week.

Thanks, brus!... I "built" my "dream bike", just like you are doing now. I appreciate the compliment.

Flame thrower, huh? Came across this...

DIY flame thrower

You mean the nitrus system, right? ....although it would be fun to torch a 10 foot afterburner any time you want!

I am really interested in nitrus too. Not the safest thing for the bike let alone the rider. But really cool and looks badass too. I just have the vaguest of ideas how they are installed. I'd stay away from flame throwers if you get one in there. lol

Rook ebay has a nice double bottle kit just for the zx14, each bottle has a really cool bracket that mounts above each side of the exaust, so the bottles go with the flow of the exaust. double bottle kit on ebay new buy it now is 375.00 plus 15.00 shipping thats the one i got. single bottle is 275.00 and 15.00 to ship comes with everything you need to install but you must purchase the purge kit seperatly. You can run an 80 shot on a stock engine but thats as high as you can go if you jet it any higher you run a hi rish of doing major damage to your engine. Im jetting it for a 40 shot because on a bike 40 HP i believe is a lot to have at the push of a button and that puts me waaaay on the safe side of not doing any damage. Ive also done more research and found a dual flamethrower kit for motorcycles on ebay for 70 bucks shipped it comes with a control box that you wire into your harness so when you push the button it changes your fuel ratio just for the time that you are holding the button.

LOL, you WERE serious! Well alright, man. cool! You need to remove all the packing from the muffler, I'm sure. I think my pipe would be a great flamethrower! It's all open pipe. One screw to take off the end and One more screw, the baffle pulls right out.

I don't know much about it but my feeling is that the flame thrower might pose a bit of an explosion risk with the nitrus.

$375 for a nitrus sytem------I expected ~$500. I almost want to go over to eBay and buy one myself bt I have not dione the homework on which NOS would best meet my needs. IDK?? is any nitrus sytem the same as the next?? is there a premium brand?? what is the dif between dry nitrus and wet?? What exactly are we talking about when we say 40 shot? Is that 40 cc of N2O/second or does it mean just enough Nitrus to boost the engine 40 hp at a given rpm??

.........and I'm sure there are a hundred other questions I would want to know the answer to before I spent my hard earned cash.

Not sure what to do. Looks nice. Think I have seen it before but this is not something to buy on impulse and there is an awful lot of educating I would need.

I don't know if I would be alowed on a track with that on the bike. Perfectly acceptable for drag racing but IDK about a road course??? Also, IDK if the cops can bust you for having the system on there even with empty bottles. Sure would not improve my reputation.

Thanks for posting the link, brus. I have 'til the 12 before the sale closes.

dont worry about when the sale closes its a store on ebay so theyre always on there. as far as wet and drt, dry is just a nitrous spay out of one nozzle in one place and wet is when you hook a fuel line up to it so when you spray it you sraying nitrous and fuel into the intake at once. if you have a direct port nitrous injection system that spays your nitrous directly into the cylinder. make sure you have a power commander so you can get the map for nitrous i still need to get one.

Soundes way more complex than I am ready to get into at the moment. Not only that, I already have more power than I can use in 1,2 gears so if I spray, it will be in 3 & up which will mean that I will be going pretty fast for the street. I guess I'd like to have an NOS on there for the novelty of it and a few moments of insane speed.

I heard that there are nitrous systems that are priced similar to the Ebay one all the time and supposed to be decent quality. This is the one recomended on Bikeland

Actually, brucer, that is the same system as on Ebay. The boys at Bikeland seem to like it alright. Muzzy was also mentioned as a fav. and MPS was also liked.

There is a bunch of info to digest before I begin to come to some sort of worthwhile opinion on this. In these cases, I find it best to listen all you can -- not to figure out what is best, but to learn who sounds most like they know what they are doing and are also on your wavelength-------then just do what they did. Saves a lot of money and time and avoids the dreaded wall of shame (where we hang our expensive bike crap that didn't quite meet our expectations).

When you don't know how to mod, follow a group that has similar aims and just do what they do. It works.

I'm pretty sure I read in my service manual that the chain for our bike is an "endless" chain, and that you have to pull the swingarm to r&r the chain. I didn't read every word in this two page thread, but I didn't see anywhere that you guys are doing it this way. I did see the words "chain breaker" and etc. When you buy a new chain, is it already riveted and in the "endless chain" configuration, or do you have to rivet it?

"Endless" simply means...NO MASTER OR CLIP.No removing swingarm either.Clutch cover only.

Yup, you got to break it and rivet it. I bought the MOTION PRO Chain Breaker Press & Riveting Tool kit. Worked good but I broke the press pin for our chain. So if you do, but extra pins. All in all, it not hard to DIY.

My son bought the Motion Pro "PBR" chain tool, and we replaced the chain on his '09 Honda CBR1000RR last weekend. We got it done, but the cupped end of the "driver" bolt broke/crumbled apart after we pressed the old chain pin out. It crumbled away some more when we rivited the new pin. Seems they could have made that driver bolt of a harder metal or somethin...I was not impressed, and that is a Motion Pro product, of which I have always heard good things about.
