Place the battery in the bottom tray, wrap all the way around with Glass tape and then reinstall. This way no foam, no top plastic guard, no weight of any kind. Simple and very very Strong. Won't Move. Just a idea ?

As long as the tray is held in place by the pegs and the battery is held with a short bungee, that should make everything stay put. Or am I misunderstanding how the tray is fastened in there?

Rook you got it but keep in mind the metal hooks on the bungee. If they come lose from all those wheelies from that new gearing of yours they may go to ground. I'm sure you could rubber tape them ?

Personally...I'd leave the top case guard on there(OR...a nice thick piece of foam).Just sayin.Kinda supposed to protect/keep the terminals from possibly contacting the frame in there?IDK.If I do get one...she'll be foamed up good just in case.

hehe- I'll prolly keep the top protector on there. I just want to go as far as I can without making this inconvenient for street use. That tape idea is great but I need something a bit more ........refined. I'd do that for a track bike for sure. I might do it for temporary use.

I think I am getting the little 14 amp though. Have to talk to a Shorai person 1st. back in town Tuesday and will have credit card in hand.

Lol, tape won't be pretty that's for sure but it will Never move and better than that foam. I have held up 400lbs of cable Shackles with this stuff while we pour boiling lead into sockets. More than adequate and it takes a long time for the fiberglass tape to catch fire if your wondering about heat.

Really easy and a fast way, just not pretty

If you look back at pics you can see the foam lifts the bottom of the battery out of the tray. I then found myself stuffing foam in any place it could vibrate free. A proper tray would still be best.

Just curious, do you guys really like the idea using of foam ?

No... but after capping and strapping the battery to the tray, but before installing, I shook that thing like a mad man and it stayed put.

I don't know what any of that stuff is but I am laughing here to myself. All very high tech and industrial and we have to bring in the tape to save the day!

OK. I'll go with tape if I have to. This will be the race battery. I'm hanging onto the stockers for a while. That's what you can do with all the battery tenders you got for Xmas Dogo. Hook up your old batteries for a while---just in case.

Actually, I've had no trouble finding other toy's to hook the Tenders up to.

'ata boy, if you have the periferals but you have not the toy, you have more reason to acquire the toy.

I have a motorcycle dust cover that is too small for a busa or a 14 but it fits quite well on a 600.

Rook, why go with the 14 when the 18 Amp-Hour is recommended and so much stronger on cold crankin amps? 3.2 ounces on a 540 lb bike, that's barely the weight of a good popcorn fart! The 14 A-H will work but I like to hear that bad boy really hum when I hit the starter button....jus sayin....

I actually like the foam, Romans. I took the time to pack mine in there so it won't budge and the vibration and impact protection should make the cells last longer. I do wish they had a custom molded foam insert designed for each combination of battery and box, would look sharper than the foam strips. Hold on there a second.....you can buy spray foam in a can that expands after it leaves the nozzle and then hardens at room temperature. Kinda like that stuff they blow up into your walls and around pipes for insulation. Spray it into the bottom of the box, set the battery in there and then spray around it and wipe up the excess for a neat installation. The foam would take up all the free space and it would be essentially sealed into position. I think they sell something like this at arts and crafts stores also.

BG, here's the e-mail address of David Radford, the tech I was talking too at Shorai. He could put you in touch with the right person in sales to discuss a possible group buy. If they could beat Superbike Supply's pricing it might be worth it, if not.....

Anyway, here it is: tech@shorai.org

kruz, I packed mine in tight as well but I just picture that foam going soft with all the heat our motors put out. Then wires coming lose and all the rest, U know. I just can't see foam as a permanent solution. Batteries in most applications are bolted down solid. Foam just does not fit into the solid description to me. At any rate I'm sure we will be fine, it's not a dirt bike lol.

Kruz, you have peeked my curiosity, Did you read something about vibrations shortening the cell life of this battery ?

y couldnt you just take the foam they send with the batteries and make it the height you need plus 1 or 2 more glue them together them cut out a tight space for the battery to sit down in

When I had my Turntech,I used an old seat(14 that is)seat foam piece and cut out a pocket where the batt sat in.Worked fine.I don't think I'd want to go with the spray foam...that stuff gets rock hard(least the stuff I saw)...and tryin to remove the battery could end up bein a REAL drag.

Rook, why go with the 14 when the 18 Amp-Hour is recommended and so much stronger on cold crankin amps?

I will have to check with Shorai because I have been hearing the 14A is recommended but the 18A is stronger.

3.2 ounces on a 540 lb bike, that's barely the weight of a good popcorn fart!

Yaeh but seems that there are two 14A that have same power specs and one is ~5-6oz lighter than the other. We are talking 1/2lb less than the 18A. For half a pound, I have to stop and think about it. Just have to figure out how to hold that lil devil from banging around in there. We're thinking tape for now but I should be able to figure out a neater install than that.

^^^Don't want to start any misinformation. I will have to talk to Shorai and verify all of this. Then I can be a Litheum pioneer like you guys. Of course, I think the 18A is a more practical choice with 95% all the benefits + more power.

Hold on there a second.....you can buy spray foam in a can that expands after it leaves the nozzle and then hardens at room temperature.
Sounds like you are talking about "GREAT STUFF". Red can yellow letters any hardware store. I would cover all the fabric lining in there and mind any wires. Also, if the Great Stuff works, it will not come out. It will definitely be be locked in undercuts and iregularities so if you want it out, you will have to cut it. Basically, it will form a hardened cast of the inside of your battery compartment. It will fit TOOwell. but it's an idea.

Yeah, let us know.................

To match the height of the stock battery?? Theoretically, that would seem to work fine but it wouldn't be long before the foam squashed down and stuff started getting loose. I think a short bungee would work.

Rook here is a pic of the small bungee cords that fit perfect. Keep in mind Elastics don't like heat. Big metal hooks as well. Maybe you have different ones ?

I'll take your word on that if you have already tried it, Rom but the stock elastic strap never seems to have any problems.

Yea, I think there's enough there to make a "lounger" of sorts for the batt to sit in.

Also Guys, this may be a good thread to keep an eye on:

Shorai battery testing

The guy is using 18ah Shorai's in his Connie and Goldwing.

You just like the tape idea.

It's not perfect 4 sure but Quick Easy and it will never never move. Just one option. Incredible what this tape can do. We rewind 10,000lb electrical motors and bind with it. Then place motor in oven for 24 hours. It works as a insulator and is awesome around heat. Ratchet strap in a roll lol. 3M makes some amazing products.

If you place battery in tray and rap all the way around,,,,, all is solved. Hard pressed to find a lighter and easier way. Just not pretty. Easy to remove if need be. No perfect way, just one idea that anyone can do no skills required. Just throwing it out there.

Romans, I have not heard anything specific about vibration and lithium cells. I do know that vibration will shorten the life of just about anything electronic though, including connectors so I'm just thinking ahead.

I think we're way overthinking this installation issue. I believe the foam sheet that Shorai provides is more than adequate for the job and I've got a million uses dreamed up for the left over foam. It's perfect for PowerCommander installations, just cut to size, peel off the backing and stick it on there.

One more thought, as light as these batteries are, Velcro with the adhesive backing would stick one of these puppies down and from my experience it ain't going anywhere. The side panels on my 10R and 6R are stuck on from the factory with Japanese Velcro and they stay on at 140 mph....just a thought!

25 F here this morning.

Figured good time to retest the Shorai. Walked over to the 10r, turned the key, flipped the switch, hit the button... Fired right up!

Sorry, w/ only 90 miles on the odo, I don't want to cold start the 14 any more than I have to.
