Which bar end mirrors?
07/06/11 12:44 PM

I already know I am not going to see much with them but which ones are best for what reason? I don't see much out there. Guess I am going mostly for looks and easy to take off for track use. The OEM mirrors are not real simple to take off but bar end mirrors are just 1 bolt in the bar end weight. I want to be able to convert the 14 to track use quicker.

was thinking about these.

I have a pair these:

CRG LS

Nice thing is they fold... bad thing is that they are $pricey$... but I got lucky and found mine on CL.

The vision with bar ends is actually very good. So good, I felt I only had to use one, on the clutch side. Only problem with that was when riding with another bike... they could get into the blindspot, on my right... Not a problem if you run two, which is how my 10r is set up.

I have these on my 14 now...

Roaring Toys ZX14 Billet Sportbike Mirrors Black

Not what you are looking for, though.

Looks like you were able to install the CRG LS BEmirror without removing the bar end weight?

The folding ball bezel is really a nice high quality touch and makes it worth the price even though 3x what the eBy mirrors in my link are going for. Looks like the Ebays you can adjust up and down while on the bike but you are stuck with what ever forward/back angle they deemed "best".

On my 14, there was enough room on the factory clip on for the mirror to mount when the stock bar end was removed... but... I bolted the bar end that came with my CRG's to the clip on, on the outside of the mirror, just so that the install looked "finished".

Sorry I don't have better pics to show you what I'm saying.

Oh, the folding feature of the LS's isn't used to adjust the view. There is more than enough adjustment (up, down, forward, and back) on the pivot ball.

I see, the CRGs comes with their own Bar end weight.

I was hoping that I could use my own bar end weight with the CRGs. I got a blue anodized set of bar end weights for $5 with my $12 blue anodized Chizoma grips from China.

From what I can tell of that pic, Rook, those Chizoma weights don't have the "recess" that the factory ones do to cover up the 1/4" or so of clip on that sticks out past the grips on the 14... A set of bar end mirrors may be exactly what is needed for you to use those w/o doing some machining.

you're right Dogo. The surface of the weights that comes up to the edge of the grip is completely flat. There is about a 1/4 inch protrusion that will stick inside the bar but there is no recess to accept the last 1/4 inch bar itself. The grips themselves are a bit shorter than the stock grips. I was wondering what I was going to do about the gap. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks for the heads up.

I won't use bar end mirrors because I love my Vibranator bar ends way too much.

LMAO!!!

I'll let Priv answer what they do... as I've never used 'em... but I know they won't work with your factory clip ons on the 14... You have to have a hollow end to accept them.

Vibranator Bar Ends have extremely heavy ends, and a tuned rod which extends inside the handlebar (not touching it, just suspended inside).

I learned about them from the COG guys at a rally. They swore by them, and these are guys on C14s which are, surprising, a little bit buzzy. But they ride huge distances.

They make a generic unit for 7/8" bars, and it just slides in the bar end, then you turn the hex nut until it locks in place.

Since I put them on last winter, I've not had my hands go to sleep after day-long rides like they used to.

They can be made to work with clip ons if you have clip on bars that are open at the end. If this was 20 years ago, I'd still have my clip ons probably, so I'd either buy aftermarket bars to replace them, or take them off and bore the end out in a lathe.

I give them an A+

Just ordered 2 off Ebay. SHeeze, those R expensive.....I was assuming you got a set of two when you ordered 1 unit.

The stock mirrors are over a lb of high riding weight. You might think I 'm nuts but I swear I could tell a difference in the feel of the bike with the mirrors off. Maybe it was just my imagination?

The 14s mirrors are quite attractive but I have grown weary of loooking at them. The bike looks a lot different with out them on. These will be easy to take off for the track.

IDK if we the laws here permit 1 mirror on a motorcycle. I got two. I DO use both mirrors----

CRGs came today! Quite expensive for what they are but for the adjustability and the look, I think they are worth it. Dogo, I think they will fit well with my new grips that are not quite long as the OEMs and my new bar end weights that add a little more bar end space for the mirror bracket.

OEM mirrors = 33.50
CRGs + Vortex mirror caps = 10.35 oz

Shaves close to 1 and a half pounds of high riding weight.

\\Easy to remove for track and another half pound gone.

lol--I knew there was something I recognized about those bar end weights......something strange what is it, what is it???? AH-HA! The Chizoma weights don't have the recess the factory weights have because the Chizoma weights aren't weights! They are spools!! I guess you can do either one with them after you drill them out first because the spool bung and the bar ends both have larger threads than the holes in these bar end spools.

The grips worked out great. the trick is to lube them uo with a lot of dish soap and dip the grip in a water qyuickly before sliding on. Other thing, do NOT hold the rubber part while you pull them on. Hold the aluminum. You hold the rubber you squeeze it against the throttle tube. I also DID use a rubber mallet to pound them on the last bit. I just slid a large socket over the nob the bar end screws onto and tapped the back. That way I was applying force on the edge of the grip only. One problem, the throttle grip is too short and there is about a quarter inch of grey tube showing. I think I will just spray it black and roll some o-rings over it. Might actually work as a home made throttle lock-- roll the ring away for unlock, roll back for lock.

the CRG mirrors fit the knob at the bar end perfectly. I will be doing some cutting or grinding to mod the bar end spools so that there will be something to ensure the mirrors do not fall off. I really like the look of NO bar ends. The black nob is cool AFAIC. Plain throttle tube looks kind of cool in it's own way to.. That would be a track bike grip for me. Smaller diameter grip -- finer throttle control.
