Wider back tire
09/29/09 5:47 PM

Has anyone ran a 200/50ZR/-17 on the back, if so is it the same height as a 190/55ZR-17?

190/55 is taller than 200/50- it's simple math.

RE: Wider back tire

Let's start with the first series of numbers, 130/90 16, otherwise known as the metric designation. This is the most popular nomenclature today and it's practically a standard in the automotive world.

The 130 designates the tire's width in millimeters, measured in a straight line through the tire from one edge of the tire's tread to the other. The second number, 90, is a bit trickier to understand. This represents the aspect ratio between the tire's width and its height, or how tall a tire is in relationship to its width. Simply put, the higher this number is, the taller the tire will be. In this case, the tire is 90 percent as tall as its width, or 117mm.

The last number, 16, is the tire's rim diameter expressed in inches.

The width on some tires may be expressed in inches as well, but usually the aspect ratio is left off.

The other series of numbers and letters, MT90 16, represents the same tire size, but it's expressed in an alphabetical code. M means the tire is designated for motorcycle use, T is the tire width code, 90 is the aspect ratio and 16 is the rim diameter.

minter.. most definatley changed the way it handles i got the Avon Storms, with the 014's(stock tires) i was never comfortable with them in the corners and after 3000 miles on the it was like driving a tank into the corners. now the storms im still scuffing them in (only 20 miles on em) but the bike now handles like my much smaller zx9 the 14 feels very nimble now.

let you know more if it ever stops raining and i can get them scuffed in, but so far they seem to be very sticky and hold to the road good

Is your garage floor carpeted or are you working on your bike in the living room?

I'm suprised it makes the bike feel nore nimble. The popular wisdom says the wider tire will not handle as well. Could it be the Avon tire itself that feels better? Actually you'll have to get the gloss off and go through a few chicanes before you feel the full difference. Be interesting to hear, let us know. The fatter tire is definitely looking more cool!

yea sharkey im sure you know how when you put new tires on how they all handle different than the wore out tires u had on there lol. im just hoping to be able to get it out on the road and get them scuffed in b4 the snow starts. but im sure being avons has alot to do with it really though the 200 is not really that much wider than the 190.(dont look tike it anyways) btw sharkey i didnt have tires balanced i used 2oz of dynobeads in ea tire did manage 150 mph run and 0 vibration they seem to work very well guess there was some concern with them eating up the inside of your tire but wont know that till i change out the tires again.

I'm using the Dyna Beads in my tires. They work great.
The local bike shop where I bought them from use them on every tire job.

So I ordered some Dyno Beads and they came. Little bitty things. I guess the idea is to put them in through the valve stem? No instructions came. The local shop I'm using to mount the tires had never heard of the Dyna Beads, so I'm going to have to tell them how to do it. Do we have a voice of experience out there to give me a little help here?

sharkey, first off did you order the filtered stems if not you should do so. if your doing a tire install they just dump the bag of beads right into the tire as they r installing the tires. with out the filtered stems though you will have to give the tire a shot of air before you check tire pressure this gets the beads out of the stem

OK scott, thanks for the heads up. I didn't find a site with instructions, but I found the valve stems. So you put 2oz in each tire? I did order 4 ounces but I thought it recommended 1oz front and 2oz rear. I was thinking 1 1/2 front and
2 1/2 in the rear.
One of these days my tires will arrive....
