Boots
05/03/09 3:22 PM

I was considering buying some new boots (currently wear Doc Martin's). I do not want a track specific boot because most of my riding is on the street and I don't want to look out of place when I am just out to run a few errands. The Icon boots look like a good package for price and protection. The Super Duty look as if finding the shifter would be easier due to the shorter toe. The Field Armor Chukka seems like it would offer better protection and is vented so long rides would be more enjoyable. I wanted to know if anyone on the site wears these or has another suggestion as to and everyday riding boot they would recommend.

Stupid as it may sound-I wear MOSTLY(but not exclusively)Rip Curls by Tom Curren(the surfer).Yeah,I know-sounds I've tried alot of boots-spent lots of cash-these I've had for Two years-just as good as the day I bought em.They're NOT motorcycle boots(like in HEAVY DUTY).They're almost the same design as UGGS.In fact,I was eventually going to try the UGG ALISO.My Tom Curran's are Super comfy, fit snug, are lined with fleece, and slip on.Go up to mid calf.DON"T SLIDE AROUND on footpegs OR road.In the event of a fall,I'm quite sure they have enough leather and stoutness to absorb probably most impacts or scraping. They probably won't help much if you have a run in with a tree trunk or get your foot jammed between a guard rail.I'd rather have my foot SLIDE rather than dig in.I really like em.I couldn't find a pair of decent "lighter"boots that I could shift with.Just too clunky.Usually the toe area has no give, and it barely will go under a shift lever(in my case).Go to ZAPPOS.com-They have excellent shoes, all kinds, and really good shipping times.Who says a "motorcycle" boot has to look like something you'd see on the Frankenstein Monster? My opinion-if ya fall you're probably gonna get scraped up SOME.That's a given. If someone nails you in a car, your gonna get crunched PRETTY DARN GOOD,and I don't think Harley boots are gonna make much difference.I've never tried any "race"boots(Sidi's,alpinstars, you know,so I could always LEARN something new here.I wouldn't be above trying any of those at some point.Might change my whole opinion? (Hope I don't lose my foot first!)

I go against all conventional wisdom here, and wanted a shoe with a very thin soft top and bottom so I could feel the levers through the shoe and EASILY get my foot under the shift lever. It has absolutely no ankle protection. But I took my first ride with these yesterday, and I like them a lot:

Ordered them here.

If I fall going the speeds I ride, my ankles will probably be the least of my worries. -bg

I have the Icon super dutys and I love them. A perfect compromise for riding and walking around. I were them all day at work with no problems. I have had them 6 years now and they are holding up great.

i wouldn't buy the icon boots. i've got them and i'm currently looking for something else. if you wanted an icon boot just go to walmart and save the $$$. i'm looking at the alpinestars smx line and sidi also has nice comfortable touring boots.

I've got a pair of these:

http://www.alpinestars.com/Octane_Shoe/pd/np/113/p/251407.html

I like 'em a lot. I still have a pair of regular, racing type boots for whaen I know I'm going to be a hooligan, but the shoes still offer me good protection and are comfortable for walking around also. Before I bought the Alpinstars, I'd just wear a pair of combat style boots for "casual" rides.

I wear the oxtar track boots. Simply because of the ankle support and protection. I watched a friend grind his ankle down and nearly snap it off so I protect them.

I've been wearing a pair of Alpinestar SMX's for ten years and will probably be replacing then with a pair of SMX5's after this season. They have held up far better than my expectaions.... which was extremely high since the $350 they cost me was almost half of what my rent was back then!

I like a good sport touring boot, oxtar are great ,my only complaint is with the gortex lining my feet sweat {stink} fabric softener sheets control that problem. If I'm doing a long rides I find when I take off my boots at the end of the day people give me space to stretch my legs.If they don't I find a large glass of milk and a couple of beer they give me plenty of space

I bought a pair of Puma Ducati Street Cruisers Mid in black, and they are perfect all around, I use them also when I go out and wear casual clothes, they look pretty good as a casual shoes, the lace protectors get hidden by the jean leg. And they provide all the protection you would need for street riding. Here's the link...

Thanks for your replies-I'd like to get a pair, but I'm concerned that the toe will not fit under the shift lever.I had a pair of Alpinstar "roam" waterproof boots-couldn't use em-too stiff on the toe,and too thick there also.Any comparos? Thanks.

Thanks Reeves. You know,in the picture they look "just perfect"-toe looks nice and flat and kinda narrow. But there's nothing there to compare the height of the toe with.So when ya order em-you end up with something like 3" thick that won't bend or anything(not saying these ones would be like that).Just don't want to go through that!!!Ya gotta pay return shipping on those things!Anyone know the height of the toe on these? And will they bend there?Heck with it,I'm ordering some!!!

I know protection comes first, but approximately how much does a pair of boots like that weigh?
