Hmmmmmm, all of this is verrrrry interesting...but stupid!! (Rowan and Martins Laugh-in!) LOL Blast is right, I've got a BMW HP-4 and as you can read just about anywhere...IT'S A FREAKING ROCKET!!! Really, really fast litre bike no doubt about it! BUT, every time I get off my 14R I just shake my head, look at her and tell my...ahem...rather accomplished riding buddies, "That's one bad bitch rite tare!" Sheesh, I can promise you, there are NO CBR's with those mods can stand her. I've got one buddy that has a really HOT CBR, lot's of mods, not sure what all, but I can tell you that his bike can't stay with her in a long straight...I DON'T CARE WHERE WE START! It's just that simple. When we ride the twisty's, meh, I'm not sure cause I always ride my HP-4.
Down the highway? Shiiiiiiitttt!!! This, guys...is NOT a matter of opinion it's just a MATTER OF FACT! End of story.

Even if you get a 'lighter more nimble bike', you're going to have to mod it to keep up with your son. Bottom line is - you don't like the 14 because it's too big and heavy... so sell it and get a liter bike. At this point if you mod the 14 and it doesn't win a roll-on, your going to go into a hissy fit.

OP, are you freaking serious? Your starting a race at 50mph in 4th? and complaining about losing to a bike with -1 +3 gearing? Wake up man. In 4th gear that's like is like umm, 3500 rpm. Stop neutering yourself by starting at rpms barely above idle and kick that cbr's ass.

50-60mph is 1st gear territory. Maybe 2nd, if you have wheelie issues. I KNOW you might think that having a 1400cc bike will let you race him with TQ as your advantage; but not at such a low rpm.

Face it, given the engine differences and trans ratio's plus diff gearing you will NEVER be starting at the same speed and rpm in the same gear. So.... you start where it suits you best, and he does the same. Bang a few gears and eat that bitch alive.

Take for example the race I had with my friends 08 gsxr1K and 06 R1. Both make about 170-175rwhp. and both riders are lighter than I am by about 20lbs. They jumped on it in 2nd at about 70. I was in 4th. They got out about 5 bike lengths ahead of me, but by the time my 4th gear starting pulling, I walked right around them. The next time me and the R1 started both in 2nd at 70. I shifter into 3rd with the clutch, and 4th and 5th without. in 2nd I pulled 2 bikes, 3rd 2-3 more, 4th gear it was 3-4 more, and 5th was a complete asswhoopin.

Now, your gen 1 might be a little bit off what mine will do, but I'm sure with a few careful mods and starting where you have the advantage will erase any wins he might be getting.

Kid, take dad's bike, know it's going to wheelie you keep looking forward and wait for it. You are also multitasking watching redline. Kid, dad has decades of miles on his rear end and you are still green. Just whoop his ass so it's the rider we are looking at because now both of you are on the red carpet.

Jeez, if you want a faster bike than your son's, put a pizza pan sized rear sprocket on the 14 and stomp him and yourself into the ground. The ZX is supposed to be fast AND comfortable for real roads and real riding. I had a ZX10R and I wouldn't trade the 14 for it for any reason. It seems you need to figure out your priorities.

In regards to acceleration you do have King Kong. But let's face facts, give exactly equal performance of the rider your bike will do the standing 1/4 faster than his. You will lose to him in roll on test every time. You have King Kong, your son has Godzilla. Both are monsters capable of insane performance.

Also you haven't had your 14 very long. I remember when I got my first bike. I remember losing to 600s stop light racing for the first couple of months. I just thought, geez you know my bike is a tad older and probably slower. It wasn't the bike, it was me. Eventually there wasn't a 600 that had a chance when I learned how to launch it properly, or hell really in any kind of straight line racing.

I have been riding for over 35 years and have had many bikes, including a CBR 954 & Aprilia RSV 1000.

Well, kawasaki was originally going to call that color "Atomic Slower".

I sent this same msg in a pm; but thought I would also post it here in case it helps others who may read this. Also, I realize that I might have come across as a bit of a dick. and wanted to clarify some. lol.

I looked back at how I worded my post about your racing your son and I wanted to send you a message to apologize. What I typed, I meant. But I didn't mean it to have quite the tone it did. I wasn't trying to be mean. I just was pretty passionate about the fact that your bike ridden the way that it can be; will perform quite well and should be a match for most liter bikes. modded or not. While its true that a gen 1 will struggle against the absolute best and newest 1K's. IE BMW S1Kr, zx10r, panigale, and the like.

That has to do with power to weight, and rider skill and size. From the right roll on, a zx14 will be in for a tough battle if the wheelie and traction problems are negated in the lighter bikes by racing from a roll. Plus, if they are modded so to give them certain advantages and you leave them those advantages by playing by their rules; any bike can be beat. Best advise I can give, is try to get the starting speeds down where your longer wheelbase and TQ can give you the advantage. And if that doesn't help, match the mods that the CBR has. Gearing and exhaust and pulling the flies will make that bike a runner.

But first, race him again where you have the advantage; and report back. you might just find what your looking for.

I might as well chime in.
I have a 2014 zx14r brock ct, and Cblasted. My son has a 2007 honda 1000 rr. with two brothers, power commander, and mapped on the dyno and +2 on the rear.
Even if we start in the same gear, 4 gear at 70 my bike ran away, not even close.
If we start in a gear lower where the 14 is reving a little higher his honda immediately disappears in my mirrors
Were talking it's NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!
And on the winding road i just keep it in third and i'm ALWAYS right there.
