Deal's Gap in July
01/08/13 1:09 PM

Anyone happen to be thinking about the Tail of the Dragon this summer? Planning a trip with a friend of mine for the third weekend of July.

I'm not 100% I will be able to swing it but if I can, I will love to meet you on the way there. Are you riding or trailing?
July's going to be crazy over there for sure!

I will be there June 13th through June 16th. The following weekend I will be in Blacksburg, Va. for the mid-atlantic M109R meet. I will be on the zzr1200 at the gap tho.

I like the idea of being there when it's crazy. Not too thrilled about the crowded roads, of course, but we do intend to have as much fun on the nights as possible...

I'll be riding there definitely. No real schedule, just a few days of riding and socializing. Basically plan to leave on a Wednesday, spend the night with a friend in Atlanta, then spend Thurs, Fri, and Sat riding the entire area. One requirement - I need to wake up Sun morning within shooting distance of home (New Orleans). It's a totally flexible schedule, and even the dates are flexible really. If there are better weekends over the summer anyone recommends I'd like to know.

It would be great to meet some folks along the way. I'll keep this thread updated as plans become more solid.

Sounds like fun. Hopefully, my schedule will be clear. The timing is good: I wanted to have 1 maybe 2 track days under my belt before heading there. I should have 4. If I can swing it, I'll try to hit Nola a couple of days before the trip. Keep us in the loop, I should find out within the next two weeks.

We have about 25-30 riders that will be up in the area on the dates that I stated in June. We will be staying in Maggie Valley. I posted this up on the zzr site. It would really be nice to get to meet some of you guys in person. As the date gets a little closer, I will post more information, or you can shoot me a pm and I will get it for you. There will be a big assortment of bikes there. Probably 1/2 of them will be M109's, but there will be quite a few concours 14's and such in the mix as well. They come from Canada to Florida, and all places in between.

PMing you for details. Dates... accomodation phone numbers.... whatever! :)

Or not, it won't let me click on pictures or names...

Oh never mind, I'm so used to the COG site where we just click the picture or click "Send PM" ..... then I remembered how to do it here, so PM sent.

Well, it is official, I will be at the Gap and in the area in June, but I will also be there for a family vacation the 3rd. weekend in July. We are staying in Gatlinburg at the Elk Springs resort. If it is just myself, the wife, and my daughter, I will be driving the lightning up and have the bike in the rear. If my daughters friend goes (she normally goes with us on vacation), then I will have to make due on the twisties on the stang. Either way, I am good. The Roush handles very good on curvy roads and hitting the dragon at speed should really wake the wife up.

Have fun guys!

2013 is a waste for me as far as riding... I have surgery at the VA in the end of May that will lay me up for well over a month, then again in the end of August with a 3 month recovery, and then in March/April 2014 with a 3-4 month recovery.

Then I retire in late July 2014. Maybe I can ride some then.

Good luck on your surgery, I am laid up too. Just had my knee fixed, and I hope to be back on the bike in June. A couple of us Ontarians are thinking about the Gap!
Cheers...
Good healing vibes!
PS Went out for a ride in -4 before surgery knowing I will miss the late April/May blast...

It would be nice if you could come down in June. We have quite a few of our brotherin from the north coming down from Canada on the M109 forums. I am always amazed at the nice people that I have met at some of these gatherings.

I'll be making a trip to The Gap again this year. I have no date set, but will keep an eye here. IF I can coordinate my schedule with yours, it would be nice to share a or two with other 14 riders.

You can count on it! I will be heading down on 6/13 and will be there until 6/16. I just found out that there will be a can am spyder convention in town on the 14th and 15th. I actually test rode one of them about a week ago. Maybe when I am all grown up I will get one. Right now I will enjoy being a kid. Shoot me a PM if you think you will be in the area, and I will send you my phone number.

Me and the boys from Toronto are confirmed for Deal's Gap for July 18-21! Praying for good weather since were riding all the way down. If anyone is down there that weekend, feel free to come over and share a beer. Just look for 3 14s and an FZ1.

Happy Riding!

Well, I will be there July 20-22, but it seems like I will possibly be on the stang.
Keep an eye out for a blue 06 Roush. It isn't as much fun as the bike, but it handles pretty darn good.

Beautiful car you have there black! I'm sure it would be plenty of fun on the dragon, too! I'd like to drive down at some point as well. I'll throw out a wave at ya if I see ya!

Cheers!

Where are you guys staying when you go down there? My buddy I was planning to ride with looks like he can't make it, so I would gladly come meet up with you Canadians!

Hey Caroobs, We'd love to have ya!

We have a room booked at the Deal's Gap Motorcycle resort. We're aiming to arrive on Thursday July 18th at 5pm, just in time for dinner and beers. Leaving early Sunday morning (on the 21st). If you decide to meet us there, just let me know what day and time you plan to be there and we'll make sure we're at the motel to meet you.

You can't miss us, just look for the room with 3 14's and an FZ1 parked in front of it..lol

Yeah man I'm in. My plan was to leave Wednesday and take a roundabout trip to arrive sometime Thursday as well. Maybe spend Wed night in ATL, see what kinda trouble I can get in there, and then take the long way to wherever I'm staying Thursday night. Friday full day of riding, then Saturday mix riding with heading back to NOLA, with the idea I need to wake up Sunday close enough to make it home by something like 2pm.

Wolf tells me you guys had trouble finding a place to stay, and assures me you have room for me. If so, and you guys don't mind, I'd definitely room up with you guys for Thurs and Fri night. I've heard about you Canadians though, so keep your hands to yourselves! Let me know if you're full, and I'll make some reservations for myself no sweat

Haha, Dave do you guys all have the green 14? I know Wolf does, and I see from your pic that we have the same bike. Nice!

In fact, they had rooms available so I just booked one for myself for Thursday and Friday nights. $60 a night seems pretty reasonable.

Awesome caroobs! Looking forward to sharing a few with you

Price is good. Its not the most luxurious motel, but its clean and right in the heart of the action.

Wolf and I are on green 14's and AJ is on a black 14.

Cheers!

Nice! So are you guys wearing leathers?

Have you guys thought about gear? I have a 1 piece track suit, an armored leather jacket, mesh pants and mesh jacket. I think I'm ruling out the track suit. And though, I love the protection of my armored jacket, and even though it's perforated leather, that black sure is hot in the sun. I am leaning towards mesh pants and mesh jacket so I don't die of heat stroke. Besides, if I'm running into trees the leather probably isn't helping me out much anyway.

Thoughts?

I'll probably be in leathers. Might be too hot but I dress for the slide, not the ride.

1pc would definitely be overkill. My perforated leather jacket and pants breath pretty well, as long as I'm moving. But the black does heat up quick in the sun.

hmmmmm.....

Hello boys.
So I am officially withdrawing from Deals...
Just can't last that long (ride all day, ride two days and ride all day home). I am worried that I will detour the ride or just suffer in misery! So boyz I am putting all my effort into the Bear Mountain Run in August the 10th. Hope we see some Nation Brothers there!
Sad mot to make it, and wishing you boys a safe journey,
Wman
