RE: I crashed, the 14 is destroyed. I'm ok

Busta-rooney! If I see that, the plans are over. I'll be looking for a lot smaller cracks like hairline stress cracks that haven't separated the frame yet. So far looked ok. I'm getting busy getting ready for school now (remember, my job counts on it) but I'll drain the tank and have a look underneath in the next several days. If that's good, then it's a real close second look at the engine mounts and if those are fine, I'm ordering a used tail off Ebay. I'll need some advice on getting those bolts out. I remeber we talked about it years back and you advised heat which seemed like a no-no at that time but there's no concerns about damaging the paint now. So please stay tuned.

Fuck the heat. That was then. Heat is short of bubbling the paint off remember. You want a 1/2 inch breaker bar, a step-down adaptor from 1/2 to 3/8th. You use the short hex shaft 3/8ths socket. Longer shaft, you twist that and there goes the energy at what [was a straight] shaft. This is all about torsion and being horizontal to the bolt head and breaker bar pivot. If you want the breaker bar's handle up at a 45° angle from horizontal for the easier torsional push/release, I'd be at that angle. Plus, the longer the bar, the easier. Key is to hold the pivot square and not let it bend down past horizontal, or it pops out the hex hole. There is the wide tear-out.
Cody shows the way, not heat, not Moss mangling the hex hole. And the old 10 buck cheap tool v. 5 more bucks you could of MAC or Snap-on'd the forever tool? Chase that crap chrome chinese, that hex is going to crack the socket open. Snap, you buy a set of the black sockets and those are for air gun work, not the chrome ones... if you can. So you bucked up twice for one time or lost 10 at the break, back to 10 bucks again v. 15 initial? Did that make sense you're 20 out, 15 in if you listened to turtle?
Here at Bike First, Tools Second, No Excuses Are Us... we stop the bar hops, the beer runs, fancy cigar chomps, her, etc. After the bills, quality tools are next.
Signed,
Ah shit, not again!

So do the Cody wiggle? I'll try it. I hope the hex I already tried isn't already too stretched. I quit as soon as I felt it move but I could also feel it didn't really turn. That must have been back in about 2013 or so when I intended to replace those with Ti. I never tried again. I guess I will be replacing with Ti after all. I doubt I'd trust those little hexes in the M10 bolt for a second use. I'm not sure what Kaw was thinking there. Maybe they were thinking "let's make these bolts so the average owner can't ever remove them."
Yeah, I split a chrome socket on the busa's rear shock tie rods last winter. I went to impact sockets. I was told the chromes will split if somethings torqued. One finally did.

It's more the liquid locker. The old trick is to hammer back the X that was torn out in a phillips head say, and same goes with the hex. Carefully tap-tap the phillips screwdriver/t-handle home before you give it a twist; or you'd be outside not deep seated on the twist.
This [thread bond] is more for parts taking that weight on and off, wont cause it to back out, and/or cause a liability and all that.

Yeah, I remember you suggesting I insert the allen socket and hammer it so the bit flattens into the concave floor of the hex in the bolt head. I didn't try that the first time I attempted to remove the tail frame bolts but I will this time. Thanks for the reminder.

YYYYEEEEEEEOUUUCCCHHH ROOK!! DAMN, THAT SUCKS!! Glad you fared reasonably somewhat kinda OK.
I signed in to the RC51 forum recently and found out a long time nice guy member there, California guy, slid on his RC and died. Things happen really really fast on these things. That's the thrill, but can be the agony too.

DAMN dude! He died! I love my bikes but I'm not one who accepts death for it. No thanks. Anything can happen even if you're not going fast. Heck, you can get killed in a car going slow or just walking out your front door. I feel high speed on a motorcycle definitely lowers the odds though. If I were driving a car, it would have been a wrecked car and no injuries to me. If I had been going the posted speed limit of 45, I would have been able to stop with plenty of distance to spare. BUT what fun is that? I'm still planning on drag strip racing and one day LSR. Stuff can happen there too. With the delicate scars I will have probably for years, I'm going to have to try to figure out some way to protect them from my protective gear incase I go down again. I tore a scar open just scraping against the edge of the table a few days ago. Scars are not anywhere near as tough as skin.

Yeah, here's the thread I logged on to in front of my face https://www.rc51forums.com/threads/rip-jondog9.91317/

Well, that was shocking and bad enough, but on an organized group ride ~8 years ago a lady on a cruiser drifted to the right off the pavement onto grass in a left hand curve, started sliding, came back onto the pavement, tires gripped, high-sided her, she apparently landed on her head, no helmet, and that was that. Her helmet was in her side bag, altho I'm not sure it would've saved her, would rather have it than not.
I was about 8-9 bikes back and far enough back around the curse that I didn't see it happen, instead riding up on the group as it fell apart and dispersed to the sides of the road, and saw her bike skidded across the road and her laying in the ditch face down.
They say 'Dress for the crash', and I do. It's bad enough even when dressed for the crash.

I remember hearing that recently. It must have been you telling about it. There was a similar story on the org from a Canadian member. It was a rider with a racing background and she had a salad bowl helmet on. She hit a pot hole and went off the road. She lived but she was injured bad enough to be hospitalized.
All this gives me the heebie-jeebies. I don't mind. I always say, it's better if you can learn from an example than from experience. There is no teacher like experience though. Glad I love to work on the bikes because I learned my lesson on this one. But you can get killed slipping on the ice. It will all balance out for me eventually. I'm not real keen on taking risks at the moment but I obviously have to live. Heck, I saw a bear again walking down the trail. two days later I was out walking the trail again. I'll risk a bear on the trail over several drunk drivers on the road.

That's awesome, Rook. ~2 months ... not bad
Thanks extrap. I think it was about a month before all the scabs had healed up. Now I just have to be careful that I don't have any major scuffs on my knees or hand. The scars are not very flexible and quite sensitive to pressure. It hurts like hell if I brush my hand across something...sort of like a bad sunburn would.

Rook, you must be one health specimen to come back and heal so quick after your off!
I'm really happy for you.
Have you jumped back onto the horse (Busa) since the 14 incident?
If not here's a pic of me committing sacrilege on a mates Busa which I really enjoyed to inspire you...

Cool pic, Yannih!
Rook, I had no idea you're in Wisconsin. I graduated from UW-Superior 2 decades ago. It was my first stop after coming to the US some 23 years ago for college. And what a place for a newcomer really...Wisconsonites and Minnesotans are THE BEST. Super nice people. I still consider Superior my American hometown all these years later.
Good to hear you are healed. You now have some cool scars to show and a crazy story to tell about how you got them!

I must share the news about the toenail injury that went largely unmentioned because it was relatively minor compared to the skin abrasions. It didn't seem to hurt much either. I believe my right foot was trapped under the bike for some time. From the black marks on my pants leg, looks like the rear wheel was spinning against my leg briefly. Then I suppose the foot went under something. The laces were all worn through on that shoe. I noticed the big toenail was detached, just held in place by the skin along the edges. A couple months later, that nail is loose and has turned yellow like it's dead. I felt a deep groove across the back of the nail this morning like it was broken straight across and now is being pushed out by the nail continuing to grow. I probably could grab it and pull it right out. Maybe I could make it into a necklace or something.

I have found that it seems to take longer the older I get. Probably why I am not quite as brave,/stupid as I once was.

I looked in on the 14 today. Still leaking coolant slowly. There's a couple ounces in the cup I have sitting under the clutch cover. I believe the coolant is from the area of the water pump. No further details. Hopefully I'll get the time and the motivation to start digging into this.
