Has anyone installed a digital shift indicator? I'm always trying to shift up to 7th gear. Seems there are two kinds: one that uses a magnetic positioning lever off the gear shifter and then there's the other one that plugs into the canbus.

Will it help? Pavlov's dog (gears) if I keep checking on occasion, then no, it won't help. You'll still check. Bet me you'll still tap the lever even if that digital number is flat in your face.

I agree with Hub. The LED shift indicaters will be easier to read but you already have the LCD on thw emutifunc meter. If i were using a electronic mod that locked the stock shift indicater, I'd want to have the aftermarket indicater. but suit yourself. Be cool to pull the whole instrument cluster out and put all aftermarket gauges in. They make racing instrument panels. I'd love to see someone put one on the 14. The double faced clocks never gets tired to me though.

The GiPro is $170. The digital shifter display I found with open end wiring is $6. I already have the flies out and a Power Commander I still have to install but I am happy with the performance so I am not spending $170 vrs $6 when the only difference is a plug that snaps into the canbus under the seat somewhere. I just need the wiring diagram from someone who's already been down this road.

the gen1 has the shift indicator on the stock display as well. It can be hard to read under certain conditions. I think jj4 just likes an extra gadget to look at. LOL I'm the same way with all my electronics under the seat where I can look at them.

One thing a shift indicator is good for is to be sure you are in N or 1 when you want to be. You can't go by the feel of the engine when the bike is stopped at a light.

Hub, it would make a difference. It's not an electronic fetish, though I can appreciate anybody's, I just can't see the dash gear position because of the angle and the dark windshield 90% of the time. I live in a very congested New England area 40 minutes outside of NYC and I do not want to be looking down. I'm 6'1' and I've done everything to lower myself on the bike, ie seat, pegs, lower rear links but I'm still a little higher so the angle to see the dash is awkward. I have to sort of dip down to see it and it's just not safe to do that in dense traffic.

Think old school. Dirt bikes have an indicator? Old classics with Lucas parts have indicators? Takes the art out of it you go electronic. Be ONE with the bike. Know its idiosyncrasies. Stab the lever without pulling clutch lever if you find you need another gear. To this day I still look for 7th. But when a car starts coming over and I nail it, guess what gear saves the day? 6th.

I followed through and got the GIpro ATRE. Found a used one for 1/2 the price and a 100% warranty so I bought it. So far, I like it. The ATRE has a setting for flies-out as well so that is where I put it for now. I'll be alble to tell more on the next highway trip.

My '13 has the positive neutral finder (maybe previous ZX14 models don't?) That's where once you're stopped and in 1st, when you click to up-shift it will only go into neutral, not 2nd. Mine seems to work consistently so far. Maybe they wear out? ... or eventually don't work consistently?

I almost never want to put the bike in N except when working on the bike, startup or when moving the bike by hand. Must admit, I don't know if it will go from 1 to 2 while at a standstill. I do know it will at times go from 2 to N when I'm coming to a stop and clicking down through the gearS. That is where I get confused at times, when clicking down gears as I come to a stop and the bike doesn't want to go all the way to 1. I wouldn't know what gear I was in without a digital gear indicator.

In any case, there is a green N indicator light that will come on if your in N. Without a gearshift indicator, that's your only clue.

All 14s and 12s have centrifugal steel balls to prevent selecting 2nd gear at a standstill.

I know mine has balls of steel.
