ZX-14R Model Year Differences
02/03/15 8:49 AM

Besides the choice of colors and optional ABS could someone tell me what, if any, differences there are between the 2012, 2013 & 2014 models of the ZX-14R?

2012: Performance modes only as SE (std equip)
2013: Performance modes w/optional ABS
2014: Performance modes ABS is now standard.
2015: P-modes and ABS is now forever on bikes.

Gen2 sport lighter wheels. Same gearing. Same basic performance output.
Pretty much long in the tooth and soon to have its place in history.
Next gen is who knows? Maybe new engine family to produce more HP in a smaller package?
The trend is 'quick accel' and the H2 fills that crack. If a N/A engine is coming, it has to be faster than the 14R and almost catch up to the H2 in accel, because HP is there by the shovel full, it's more about accel these days.

2014 also came in Ohlins version. With Ohlins shocks fitted as standard. You can see it by the badge on the side of the frame.

2012 is missing a piece behind the windscreen and has a a black tint on the lower half of the windscreen to hide it. They changed that for 2013 and on.

My 2012 bike has a tint on the back of the windscreen to hide the gauges.

NastyNachos- this is what it looks like behind the windscreen of a 2012. They're missing that plastic peice to cover that hole. I don't have a pic of what the 2013+ bikes have. But you know what's missing.

The clocks are also different. In shape and also some minor changes. The gauges now show temperature in deg and not in bars anymore. My gen 1 had white clocks and now they are black on my 14r

This is the part I'm talking about. It's missing on the 2012.

When I was talking to the stealership about buying my 2014 they told me the frame design had been updated after 2013 to make the bike turn better. Don't know what that design update is, didn't really care, just glad to here they implemented a design update to help turning. Maybe they were all stealership BS. But if someone had the details I would be interested in knowing?

rudy, I'll take a 'let me remember why' they did that as in a senior moment thinking back. The lower rear was updated for strength so as to revise the broken frame issue somewhere back there? The front was a possible degree change because the steering does feel different from a gen1 to a gen2. That, and possibly reinforcing the front for wheelie drops, but I doubt that. More neck changes because it does handle more neutral than a snap to neutral was more how the gen1 felt.

2012-2013 differences.
1. Paint job.
2. Clock cover
3. ABS available from 2013 on US bikes (UK bikes had this from day1)
4. Ohlins available from 2014 on the 'sports' version
That's it.

Incorrect.
Just compared the steering specs of 2012 and 2014 versions.
Both 93mm trail
Both 23deg caster angle (rake). QED
