DIY Plate Flipper - video
04/04/11 11:03 AM

Waiting for the snow to melt means I had some time to rig up this inexpensive plate flipper. Under $50 in supplies including a $25 stainless plate backer. Used the latching 4-Way flasher button to activate the relay for the actuator.

very James Bond of you but will it stay up when your doing 100+? Personally, I've been wanting to install a tack bin to drop tire spikes at the flip of the switch. Much more amusing. :)

Either that or the plate flipper should flip to a middle finger.

I'm just looking to avoid the 10-20 over photo tickets, no out-running anybody. I wouldn't even use it around a real cop that could pursue me, just around the fleet of private contractors running photo radar traps from unmarked cars and all the red light / speed cameras around.

It should stay up at good speeds, the actuator is pretty torquey. Anything above 100MPH, the timing on the radar cameras seem to miss you entirely.

I've never seen one in person but a lot of guys bend their plates up or down to the point you can't read them. This works but draws the wrong attention and a possible ticket. I wanted to be totally legal (plain view with light) with an option to hide momentarily.

In many states, if they catch you (just bad luck, patrol car sitting nearby) with a flipped plate or the mechanism to do so, they will hit you with criminal charges.

They will in Maryland.

And you've no privacy protections, if they want to start pushing buttons to see which one flips the plate, there is nothing you can do about it as long as they have reasonable suspicion.

I guess in low population states you might get away with it, but not anywhere there is a large police patrol presence.

Your better than me, the red led could be on for hours saying the plate is flipped, and I'd miss it. Then I'd be sitting at a light and a patrol car would pull up behind me, and I'd be busted.

I like it Madmak, although I'd probably be too scared to use it. Would be nice to have to avoid those pesky cameras though. Any chance of some photo's showing the mechanism am really curious to see how you have done it??

Yeah I reckon you're on the money, it would be the crime of the century, would make the front page and you'd end up doing less time for murder.

Nope. see I didn't understand a damn thing you just said right there. LOL You guys crack me up.

I think this plate thing would be better served if you could steal a plate and have it flip to the stolen plate and back. Especially if it was some assholes' old plate! Damn that'd be fun.
