Edge's El'cheepo center stand
04/05/11 6:29 AM

figured I'd share this stand/lift I devised for taking the front end apart on my 14.
All it does is lifts the front wheel as long as the rear is strapped down using the bracket that is usually used for the center stand or the fairing infront of the rear wheel. I took a scissors jack from a car, welded it to a large plate of steel, then fabbed a bracket to fit the mounting ears on the bike which was also welded to the jack. A couple grade 8 1/4" bolts slide through the holes and screw back into the threaded bracket. I would never use this jack for anything but static work. Getting on the bike or moving it around any more than necessary is not advised. It's just a temporary alternative to get the weight off the front wheel so tires can be changed or forks can be serviced. I would think the mount would be plenty robust since this is actually what it's meant for, however the flatness of the jack and it's tendency to want to tip over regardless of the steel plate it's mounted to does not make me 100% confident in it's strength in design for storage or any thing more than what I've listed as uses.

Don't let Bob Marlay put you in a trance! :)

LOL, bean, he wanted to make sure his bike didn't come down due to a weld failure. So he could have tacked it on all four corners and been done with it, whats the fun in that?

Cool, bean! My nephew is 20 now, he took up welding two years ago and must be a natural. He worked at a shop making instrument boxes for some government contract, doing all sorts of fine TIG.

Now he works at one of world's best crane manufacturers, Manitowoc, and welds MIG on the boom bases. All his welds get ultrasound imaged, and the steel is very heavy gauge and high carbon. He is one of the few there who hold a DIN 3 rating, allowing him to weld on the most critical parts.

I told my sister 5 years ago that Phil, my nephew, wasn't college material, but could still possibly pick a trade and make a good life for himself. He's doing it, although at 20 he is still a little bit stupid.

Yeah, I have a tendency to over do it when I weld. I've had formal training but never went for certification since it was never necessary for my jobs. Now I pretty much do it for fun. I love working with steel. I built this buggy and I bet a quarter of it's weight is welds. lol Built the trailer it's on too!

I have a 120V miller Mig I bought new and this old Lincoln Tig I got for $100 bucks! There's a Thunderbolt stick welder lurking around somewhere as well but I never find a use for it anymore.

I've had thoughts about getting more training and going into a career of welding but I don't know anyone in my area making much money doing it...I do love arcin' and sparkin' though!

You can come hang out anytime, I'm a terrible host though, 'cause I'm always busy doing something. Good thing the wife can entertain herself because she'd go nutz waiting for me to be done..lol

the rear is strapped down using the bracket that is usually used for the center stand or the fairing infront of the rear wheel.

Cool idea. I admire your sense of cheapness. Tethering the bike down by the belly fairing framework seems like a risky option though.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. The rear end is ratchet strapped to anchor points I put on my lift just behind the wheel on both sides. They loop around the lower subframe bar right where it is exposed at the front of the tail fairings. This pins the rear wheel in the Pingle chock, which I found out doesn't fit like it did on my old GSXR, and makes the axle a pivot point for when you jack it up. I try to only keep weight on the jack while I'm removing the wheel and then put the axle back through and set it on a jack stand like in the pic. It sat like this for the last few weeks and never wobbled or nothin.

Got my wheel put back on BTW only to find out I need new brake pads! Bought some Vesrah HH's. 140 bucks (ouch)

All it does is lifts the front wheel as long as the rear is strapped down using the bracket that is usually used for the center stand or the fairing infront of the rear wheel.

My mistake. "The fairing in front of the rear wheel" sounds like you were talking about the belly pan fairing.

Um yes, I was. hehe. Rook, you and I haven't been communicating very well, but I'm sure it's prolly on my end. I've been cutting my calories trying to get in shape before getting back on the bike this summer and I've been a little loopy. I feel like a blonde somedays.
