Removing the flies on a 2012
06/27/12 4:19 AM

I have been reading about removing the flies here in the forum as a performance boost however all the posts seem to be related to the previous generations (not the 2012 ZX-14R) Does it make a big difference in the 2012 model or is it just on the older bikes?

It is desirable on the 14r as well as the gen 1. Some owners have removed flies from the 2012. Only thing I was hearing that removing flies might disable the 14r's Traction Control. I think that has been cleared up. Hope you get an answer on this soon.

It won't disable traction control, but K-TRC does use the flies in some situations to control rear wheel spin.

I removed them from my '06 with great results! My '08 I did not as Kaw opened them faster already. My '12 I plan on getting the ECU flash to open them faster, along with a few other nice things done!

Guhl, Ivan's, or Brock's, ECU flash, either one (all the same?) you can't go wrong!

There is quite a debate on which flash is better. All of the people offering the flash have basically the same mods available: Removing top speed limiter, removing the TRE in lower gears, extending the rev limiter, and a few other goodies. Guhl has the KTRC unlocked so it will remain in the last mode it was left in & you can change it while moving (Ivan's, Guhl & Brocks). ECUnleashed unlocked a little bit more midrange and a few more HP, but generally they are the same. My bike was the "test mule" for ECUnleashed and I have to say, I am not impressed by the programmers. Powerhouse was the guy data logging everything and testing the tune files (on my bike), is great at what he does... Unfortunately the ECUnleashed people charge more and the KTRC is not all worked out (YET!), still waiting for an updated flash.. Just as a note, do not get any flash with fuel tuning done unless you are POSITIVE that you will not be adding any more mods or not looking for every HP out of your bike that you can get.

2015 30th Anniversary Edition 14R #250-> Brock's CT Ceramic Coated, Ivan's ECU Flash V2 & Map, Block off plates, HM Strain gauge quickshifter, GPR Damper, Spiegler lines, Muzzy's Sliders, Pazzo levers, Rizoma Next Fluid Tanks, DDM Ultra 5500K HID's Low & Hi, DB Windscreen, Cox Radiator guard, gold titanium bolts... too many to list at this point

Removing secondaries...yes...I was skeptical at first.Put it off.FINALLY decided to see for myself...with every intention of reinstalling.SHEESH....No way would I put em back in.Didn't affect the KTRC one bit.Bike is flawlessly smooth.Power is excellent.Fuel mileage in the 50's at cruise in 5th and 6th.Response off the bottom....immediate and strong.Low speed throttling....perfect...no hint of burbling or stumbling. All modes work excellently.NO backfiring...not one.Feels like changing a 17/41 stock 14 to a 16/43...that's the best I can describe it and without the topping out in every gear.6th basically is overdrive...for anything above 120.Amazing.Just amazing and fun.

Do you know for sure it didn't affect K-TRC? I mean, when a slide starts in a turn? When the front wheel comes up exiting a turn? Just curious what you base your assertion it doesn't affect K-TRC on.
