Radiator Guard
08/18/14 4:35 PM

I just got 2014 ZX14R ABS. Does anyone use a good radiator guard? In the past motorcycles I have owned, radiators always got some damages from road debris. With that humongous radiator, I believe I need a protector.

I have a '13 ABS and bought a Cox guard, figured it was cheap insurance for an expensive and hard to get part.

I ordered my guard from the internet, sorry but don't remember where, based from a recommendation from someone else.

The Cox guard is well made and was fairly easy to install. With a little wiggling you can get the guard on without removing the bodywork, a huge plus in my opinion!!!

Would I buy another Cox guard, absolutely, for the reasons above.

Same here. Cox radiator guard. Solid and sturdy. Install was simple. No need to pull plastics. Only shitty part about the install was trying to get the zipties on up top, they were a motherf*****. I was prob doing it wrong, happens sometimes.

Also Cox. Order direct from coxracinggroup.com. I found it easier to install by removing plastic, not sure I could have installed it confidently without doing so. Some people ditch the foam spacers but they look important to me in order to prevent the guard itself from damaging the radiator. $.02.

My first (and only) mod.

I don't know, probably not, but the spacers when correctly mounted do prevent any contact between the face of the radiator and the guard. They compress so it isn't loose. This kind of goes back to removing plastics also, getting everything just right with the spacers and all was way easier with them off. imho.

edit: from http://www.coxracingroup.com/Installation-Videos

"Installation is very simple on most models. Foam pads are mounted to the back of the frame for protection and separation between the guard and the radiator core. Approximately 5mm of a "crush zone" is generated by these pads to absorb impacts. The guards are mounted in such a way that they can 'float' on the pads and not pick up vibrations from the bike or ground. Proper mounting varies from bike to bike, and from brand to brand, as specified in the provided customized instruction kits."

Alas no pics.

Oh hey I forgot one important thing. The clearance between the radiator and this plastic shroud thingie behind the steering stem is pretty small as it is, and I had to shave a few millimeters from the edge of that piece to keep it from rubbing against the guard (with spacers) when the bars are turned. The piece to be trimmed is just ABS or whatever so tin snips made short work of that.

The shroud is there to block debris from coming up between the forks and radiator I think.

I forgot about that! That pissed me off almost as much as the trying to tie the zipties! Lol
Now I have a bit of a sharp edge on one side that's been cutting(more like fraying)into my lowering strap. Forgot to do something about that last time I had the bike tore apart.

It has happened to a few forum members. No time to search for the pertinent threads right now but there are some. Consensus has been that a guard is way cheaper than a new radiator and that it sucks a little that they don't come with guards stock.

Order direct from coxracinggroup.com, the zx14r page says fits 2006-2013 so yes.
At first I ordered a green one for my 2011 last fall but they told me

it would be a while so I took a black one they had in stock. Friendly people, call them to ask what they have in stock.

Yeah I've had my zx10 damaged by rocks kicked up on rides. I got the power bronze chrome on. And yeah mounting it wth steal zip ties are a pain without removing plastics. Not alot of room to work with. Got the cox radiator gaurd on the zx10. Uses stock bolt mounts.

I figure the guard is cheap insurance. You can't repair this radiator and I had a parts guy check on availability of a new one, probably take 2-3 months according to him. Wouldn't like to have my bike sitting that long during riding season because of a rock.

I ordered a green (anodized) Cox guard today. Think it's a great idea.

Vic, did you call them? If you just order online and the the green is back-ordered you may not be notified right away. Super friendly guys on the phone, I'm just not sure they have their customer service set up very well for online orders.

Thanks toon. I didn't order it from Cox directly, but from Bayside Motorsports. It's a Canadian company I believe. I'll double-check with them tomorrow to see if they have it in stock. If not, I"ll probalby wait cause I want a green one (yes I know it really isn't very visbile)

Just an update, Bayside is saying their processing my order and it should be here in 6-8 days. So I assume that means they have the GREEN anodized one in stock, which is really cool.

So if you're looking for a GREEN (not sure on other colors but I think there is red and blue too) one and not just black or silver this might be the place to get it.

I bought a leftover 2013 in March. In May on my way home with just 900 miles on the bike I started getting sprayed with coolant. A small rock hit one of the cooling tubes and put a hole in it. I removed the radiator and took it to a radiator repair shop and they patched it for $30. I put the chrome power bronze guard on it from Amazon. Last week with temperature up the patch started leaking. It only leaks when it gets really hot sitting in traffic. Cheapest replacement I found is #300 on ebay. Wish I had thought to get the guard sooner!!!

I ended up buying from eBay. Not China, though.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kawasaki-ZX14-06-13-C14-Concours-GTR-07-13-Radiator-guard-/121430170871?vxp=mtr

The seller is a great guy and respond very quickly to any questions/concerns.

I am very happy with the product.

I also installed a front fender extension.
