Accessory wire please ?
11/04/15 2:32 AM

Hi guys, im a cranky woman tonight, please help,
My bike battery went flat at work today because i forgot to turn off my heated grips :-(
It takes me 90 minutes each way to and from work.
What's the best / easiest wire to tap into so i can put an ignition relay on the grip warmers please?

Thank you in advance
Maddy xx

I would wire it to the taillight circuit. The wire should be fairly accessible under the seat and the taillight itself can't be pulling very much amperage. If it blows the fuse, try the next larger size.

I have a power block setup behind the battery that runs my heated gear, power outlet and airhorn, but the first two are switched and the horn works with the original buton (no power with ign switch off) So I rely on the lights in the heated gear controls and the light in the power outlet switch to remind me to turn them off.

Horn wire. Run a piggy prong off the standard flat connector. Try NAPA parts for that piggy. It's closer to the front for front work, taillight is for rear work. Key off, so go the grip warmers. Charge the battery so you bring it back up stronger than a short ride to work and back.

If you go with the horn, the contacts DO slide out of the receptacles on the horn, they're not soldered, they're just real tight. I ended up cutting my horn wire when I removed my horn totally unnecessary.

When I mounted my ear cannon, I had to run a separate power wire and use the standard horn wires to trip the 40A relay for the new horn. Not sure if there's power there without punching the button.

makes sense. People use the horn button for NOS. If you're not on the button, the accessory won't have power, right?

Unless there's power there that's grounded by pushing the button. Light fixtures in a house are wired like that; the power goes to the fixture box and a switch leg running down the wall makes the circuit complete.

The horn works with a switched ground. Constant 12 Volts, and the ground completes the circuit.

Comparing a ZX14 to a house is the funniest thing I've read in years.

Danno is going to come at me with both guns blazing, so get ready for this. He will lie and make up shit to improve his position. The guy is a fucking idiot. He loves obomination, and puts his head in the sand when you start making sense. Just like all the Libtards.

Test light in hand... key on, go touch the horn wire. No light? Touch the other horn wire... Lights? Take red nail polish and dab a drop on the hot wire's clear bootie.

Hey Danno :-)
I set up a power box too, but mine is under the seat , ran some 4mm wire to the battery ( there is a hole in the back of the battery compartment to run it through )then into a distribution point.

I put in a little Jiffy box under the seat to hide it all,
I then put a 12v plug to trickle charger if i dont ride her for a while.

That big battery is a pain to get too, dont want to do that too often :-/

Thanks Maddy :-)

If you wire it to a constant hot, you still have the issue of having to remember to turn it off. This is why I suggested the taillight wire, because it goes off when the key is turned off.

The horn lead is only hot when the key is on.

That's why you can't honk the horn with the key off.

You all will have to excuse jimmie. He had a difficult and prolonged childhood followed by years of acute alcoholism and total denial.

jimmie get some help before it's too late. Detox, rehab, AA, whatever. The nerve damage has already begun. That's why you have the shakes in the morning. Your liver is next. Once you kill that, you have to quit drinking for a year to even be considered for a transplant. Your time is running out.

Dang, jimmy you are one of the friendliest forum posters I know, what the heck
did Danno sleep with your wife or something? Anyway you guys are hilarious and entertaining!

To keep on topic......

Never thought of the horn circuit staying hot. Good tip.

Anyone know off hand what amp rating that circuit is? 10amp?

Oh.... also bad advice to just up the fuse amp size if it blows.
Find a different circuit or add a fuse block.

Please. Have you seen his wife?

After she shot him and he lied to the police about what happened, he told all his buddies that he "owned" her now.

jimmie hates me because I tell people the truth about him. He's not who you think he is.

Lines mean the wires in and wires out to ground. In between are the jobbers doing their job.
Piggyback horn wire out to_______Fuse Holder-5a fused to________Grips and completes the circuit to______Ground.

Fuse breaker backup is to follow the main harness horn's wire up to bike's fuse box and swap or keep the___[]15a[]___ fuse in place, assuming the bike's horn fuse is 10a or above.

IF... the piggy horn wire out has a short from grips to ground, backwashes up the horn wire>>> breaks the 5a fuse... assuming no other problems off the horn wire back to the bike's OEM's harness and up to the bike's fuse box. This way you broke the [5a] line at the piggyback fuse holder off the horn wire.

If the grips are rated for a 5amp draw, then run a 5a fuse/leave the 10a or 15a in the bike's fuse box. Buy the generic fuse holder that takes the same fuse size as the bike and that 3-way [matching] prong piggyback size over the horn, etc.
