My ZX-14: Still a work in progress... but
04/26/10 4:41 PM

It's almost done!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's some of the latest pics.

Left side is almost done. A few bolts to torque, a little alignment, etc. The countershaft cover is titanium so it had to be specially coated before chroming. It took about 2 months.

Left side. I finally got around to adding the chain guard.

Right side is where the major changes are. Notice the new exhaust bracket. I'm still trying to decide whether to leave the color alone (it's a shiny chrome paint color), have it chromed or have it alodined the blue color. I sold the dual Scorpions. Picked up a complete Yoshimura system (it's not completely installed yet).

Lastly, I completed the front area. Polished bar ends, fluid caps, chrome & rubber grips, chromed clip-on & switch assemblies. The little black knob in the center is to mount my new TomTom GPS.

Hopefully, it will all be assembled for the Everett Bike Show next month.

Blue, will that be too much? I'm trying to maintain a balance between silver, blue, OEM black & chrome. I don't want to take away from the chrome exhaust.

I didn't mention the radar detector mounted on the dash!!!!!!!!!!

The big screen GPS is nice for 'forward-looking' through any unknown twisties. It really works great!

Your bike is way awesome-see,I couldn't own a bike decked out like that...I'd wreck it or somethin just tryin to "be careful"and not scratch it!Honestly. Can't wait for the final pics!Did ya chrome the frame there,or is that a cover on it?It's your money-so I'll help ya spend it,okay? Get a chrome steering stem cover on there, and chrome that GPS holder.Gotta get those frame bolts polished or chromed as well.Just the part showing anyway.Get those funky wing nuts off that license plate, get ya some chrome ones there as well!

I purchased the entire 240 kit from TracDynamics. It includes everything: Tires, rims, rear brake assembly, Vortex rear sprocket, chain... the whole kaboodle! I can go to a 6" stretch. It's presently at about 4 1/2" stretch & lowered about 1 1/2".

Once the whole thing was installed, I reset the suspension. The only thing 'different' about the setup is that the wider tire wants to stay upright. I have to keep pushing down on the bars when I'm in the twisties. If I don't, it will 'pop up'.... sort of like what a toy top will do. It's OK with me because I adapt my riding style to the bike. It's kinda cool going through a hard right, then left... turn, pop up, turn, pop up.

By the way, I have a brand new set of Roaring Toyz swingarm extensions, if anyone's interested.

Blue, you're right about the exhaust bracket.

I took it off to send it to be chromed, and reinstalled the pillion peg assemblies. Good call!

It's a synthetic suede. I used the material for the seats on my FJR as well as my ZX14 (different patterns).

I took the seat to my friend John, the owner of Monroe Upholstery (in my town). Once I decided on the fabric, I left it in his hands. It could've been a little more ornamental... just a few $$$ more. He did the job for about $100 including the material. He also did the feed-through hole in my full leathers ...for my heated vest controller.... using an auto seat cover grommet.

UPDATE!

Well, shit!

1. The nice Yoshimura exhaust system didn't quite turn out perfect. It was designed for stock swingarms! Egads, I never thought about that. It was very difficult to install in the first place (the install documentation sucks!). I think I may have to live with the muffler rubbing against the swingarm.

2. Several of the parts that I sent to the chromer turned out looking like crap. The magnesium drive gear cover was a disaster. I bought a used one from ebay just in case the chrome one can't be fixed. The chroming is horrible (it's pealing!) and the bolt holes for the clutch slave cylinder were all screwed up. And the plastic chroming on the switch assembly is cracking... AGAIN!

Hopefully, the service guys in town can fix the bolt holes.

Sigh........................

Lookin Awesome ZX...sorry about your hassle with the parts-she's really lookin great!I'm not seein where your pipe is hitting?I'd just tap a small indent on it(the pipe)where ya wouldn't see it,and call it good. Can't be rubbing TOO much can it?It looks like it's perfectly set in there.Nice work-"she's ready for her debut Mr Demille"!Hangers look very nice Chromed.Perhaps you can manipulate the pipe, turn it a tad somehow so it won't hit?Maybe bend the mount at the engine case down there, give it a slight angle away from the swingarm?I don't know. How about some "shims" up around the frame hanger mount?Somethin ya won't really notice?
