Tank Bra
02/03/09 5:18 PM

I'm in the process of buying a barely used '08 ZX14. I know that I'll want to add a tank bra for protection/looks. The only brand I've found is Lockheart Phillips. It's not bad, but I'm thinking there should be more than one brand to choose from. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks. I'll give the Mag Knight a try - the lack of straps or hooks is appealing. I'll let you know how it goes.

I did not get a bra (me titties ain't that saggy...yet) cause of all the crud that can end up under them, and all the ones I've seen look 'orrible.
I went to a local auto trim shop here and had them put on a clear "vinyl" type product they call "rockguard" alot of the tuner cars here use it. It's clear, you can wax it, and is almost undetectable. I wear a CHP stle biker jacket and the belt buckle can destroy a tank's finish.
I also put a tank protector over it, mainly just for looks (it's a Ninja).

I bought black "StompGrips" for the sides of the gas tank and a "Progrip" for the part of the tank facing me---3000 smiles and no scratches and the Stompgrips give you good "grab" on the sides of the tank.

I don't like the stomp-grips cause they look like my Gramma's plastic couch cover.

I have an 06 Red. I bought the Mag-Knight carbon fiber look. Really works well, saved me from a bunch of scratches. Works best to apply it out in the warm sun.

I second the stomp grips. I have black on the sides ( Black ZX) they look pretty good , I have had a few ask what and where on them . They really make it easier to ride as not so much work involved to hang on . They also protect the sides.
I put a standard tank card where the buckle meets and its working pretty well so far both in looks and function.
My choice as I didnt want something that looked cool but made it harder to hang on or collected gunk underneath it .

I haven't been able to ride my bike yet, but I am taking into a tinting shop they do 3m clear protection, and have kits for the zx14... You can also pick and chose what pieces you want... its pricey but then you don't have a magnet or a leather tank bra, think I will still put a small tank pad as well for more protection from my zippers.... here is the link to the place here in town, i'm sure other shops can get the same kit tho... would look similar to toecutter but would wrap around to where your knees go...

I also agree that stop grip looks different, kinda like that suction mat in your shower.... but it probably does have great grip...

Hahahahahahahah, well, actually no, but then, the couch never went that fast to begin with.

I have a Mag Knight.
Looks good and does a great job protecting the tank.
I have had a small issue with the durability, however. The magnet from my tank bag has done a number on the outer layer of the Mag Knight. Doesn't bother me much, but would had I got the color matched one.

Oh, and getting a good fit requires a little patience and a heat gun.

Check out tankslapper.com they have the complete kits to protect your 14. I have the stuff all over my bike and you dont even know its there unless you look very close. when it starts looking bad you just pull it off and replace it.Its alot less expensive than a paint job.

To much to list!

The Mag Knight looks nice. The Lockhart Phillips has stitching under the edge that will cause some marks on the bike from vibes. I might put my Lockhart Phillips back on after I cover the area with some painters tape. You need to protect the tank from your tank protector.

I bought the Tank Slapper (non-adhesive variety).
What a pain in the ass to apply. I was kind of lucky with the pieces at the front/top of the tank (there's many pieces to the kit). But when I tried to apply the rear piece, it fought me all the way. I just could NOT get it to lay down flat and get the bubbles out. Couldn't do it. I tried & tried.
Finally gave up and threw it in the trash pissed off. I still have a couple pieces on at the front but you can still see tiny bubbles under it up close. I'm sure I'll end up ripping it ALL off eventually.
Oh well, lesson learned and it was cheap lesson, fortunately.

This weekend, I made a pattern for a tank bra that I will take to the local custom upholstery guy to see if he can make it economically. It's sort of an abbreviated version to the 2nd Look bra, which goes for $105 shipped ConUS. I'll post a pic if the deal works out in case anyone else might be interested in one.
