Bigger Grips
05/30/11 1:33 AM

Back in the day I had a TL1000R (2 months ago). Then I bought a cruiser to slow me down... Now I've got a 14! The only thing I liked about the cruiser was the big grips. I've got some big hands and the grips on the 14 are a little small for my taste. Has anyone "upgraded" to thicker grips?

Not the thing for me but I have seen a lot of thicker grips. Usually seem to be embellished with chrome. There is a product called the "Rifleman" which is designed to increase the speed of openning the throttle. All it is is a larger diameter grip.

I hoping to stay away from chrome!

I'm going to assume we're talking about THE Rifleman, he made 1/5 and 1/6 throttle inserts for my TL. It wasn't a bigger grip, but rather something that the cables actually sat one. I've talked to the guy a couple times, will have to ask him if he's got one for our bike!

Either way though, I guess I'd be happy with just 1/8 more diameter, 1/4-1/2 would be even better.

Thanks

I put some "grip puppies"on mine, they increase the grip size and comfort.

I put Grip On covers over my heated grips, and I love the increased diameter. Plus between that, and real handlebars, and all the weight on the bars, plus Vibranator inserts, there is virtually no vibration in the grips anymore.

And the heat comes right through the Grip On covers, so its all good.

I am always amazed at how truly limited the selection is for some things including sportbike grips. It seems Progrip is the only company to truly make a quality grip that doesn't look like it came outa the 70s. I had some nasty hard grips, OEM perhaps, on my bike when I bought it and had to lose them quick and ended up with the 719 RVGS Open End Gel Grip which is real sticky and makes it easier to control because you don't have to actually grab the grip; light pressure is enough to turn it which keeps the hands from fatiguing. However, my wrists are numb as we speak from my ride in today. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. But I can't help ya with the bigger diameter thing. My wife has some big foamy grips on her 83 GS that would be great for you but I don't know who makes em. But I think most everything you find like that is gonna be a bit cruiser oriented with the chrome or 70s styling whatnots. but they're out there...

I have some grips from Johar. Thicker than the stockers and much more cushion. Most comfortable grips I've owned.
Here's a pic that shows them fairly close.

Look at the pictures of my ZX14 in Pictures ("Super-Concours Express") as one of the pictures shows the grips really well.

They are 1) Heated grips from Gripster or somesuch (Amazon) and 2) Grip On covers, held in place with a really thin layer of grip glue.

They work great like that.

+1 on the BMW Sport grips.
I had them on my old Blackbird. They are thicker than OEM and cured problems with numbness in my hands on longer rides. I have Grip Puppies on my ZX-14. They do the job, but I liked the BMW grips better.
