luggage and brocks question
01/15/13 1:43 PM

Hi all. I should be picking up a 2013 zx-14r in Midnight saphirre blue when i get home in a few weeks. Of course I'm planning the add ons and mods while I sit in my office in the middle of the ocean. I really like the brocks alien head slip ons, but I have a concern. I plan on adding the sw motech racks and givi v35 cases, as well as carrying my girlfriend on occasion. How will the alien head exhaust treat my hard bags and girl? I'm also assuming a PC is in order with the slip ons? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You girlfriend won't like the Aliens lol unless she is already half deaf lol Plus those suckers will direct a lot of heat to her feet. If you ride with her a lot, longer pipes that will throw the noise a little bit behind her is what you need.
As far as the luggage I'm not sure, usually guys who run the alien are not into touring.

You don't need a PC BUT if you have the extra $$ which I think you do, you should. Do you have a good dyno operator over there?

On the dyno I'm honestly not sure. I just found a couple on google but if they have any experiance with bikes is doubtful. Anything over 175cc is considered a "big bike" by the locals and there are a few but not many guys riding true full size bikes. I just get disbelieving shakes of the head for riding my huge and over powered 650R (can't wait to see the looks on the 14R lol). The final goal for the new bike is more of a toy for me to bomb around on (losts of empty twisty roads in the mountains), and occasionally attach the bags and go sport touring with a few of the guys sometimes with the gf. The alien heads looked good because they look like they would provide clearence for the bags to go on no problem but I can't find a picture of the setup lol. Loud would be ok roast feet probably would be a problem. From playing with the 14 at the dealer I'm pretty sure i don't want to run errands in Filipino trafic on it ( imagine a country of first time drivers who have no idea how to control the car or obey traffic rules going either 20mph or 110, lots of trikes and jeepneys that stop in the middle of the road with no warning or lights etc...), and the 650 whould stay around to fill the role of running errands. What I have in my mind guys, and please tell me if it sounds nuts is the following:

Plan---------------------------------------------------------------------------Must Haves
Corbin Seat----------------------------------------------------------------------Keep dual exhaust
1" risers------------------------------------------------------------------------Slightly more upright position
MRA spoiler screen---------------------------------------------------------------Ability to mount the panniers
Alien head slip ons (and looks like PCV)-----------------------------------------Little more wind protection
SW motech racks w/ givi v35 boxes------------------------------------------------Happy pillion when shes on there
Spools, and maybe sliders (still thinking on the pros and cons)

I'm open to suggestions of other options that will clear the bags w/o having to drop the mounts like on the stock pipes. I'm not looking to turn the bike into a race bike or get gobs more power, just a little more ergonomic, little more growl out the pipes and the ability to through the bags on and take off for a while. First time setting up a bike I was always boring and rode them stock before lol. Help a brother out!

My Scorpion slip-ons interfered with the V35s when mounted directly to the footpeg brackets, but I made some flat stock brackets and dropped them about 1 1/4" at that point and that was enough to clear the bags. After I broke one of the Scorpion can loops (plastic) I ordered some stainless examples from Muzzys. I told the guy at Muzzys what I had done with the lowering brackets and he included some made of stainless to match the new loops at no extra charge. Now that's first-class customer service!

Sounds like slipons will suit you better... no need for a PC.

Danno thats great service. I wouldn't need the PC whith the freer flowing exhaust? Figured you'd get the decel pops. Everything is going to have to come from the states so if I need something i'd like to get it all at once to save on shipping. Any more wisdom guru's?

I fit Yoshimura R77 on mine and actual pops have only happened twice. The rest of the note is burbles.
I still run the stock ECU and there was no change to driveability.

I think Two Brothers silencers give similar result.

Interesting. Is there any difference between slip on types such as the yoshis vs the brocks shorter pipes and mufflers?

Two biggest differences in slip-ons is looks and parts availability. Design-wise, they are essentially all the same. Overall exhaust length makes fo tuning differences. Long pipes produce more low-end torque. Shorties are better on top.

I like the yoshi's and leo vince's. Only i thing i see with the readily avalible slip ons is they would interfere with the bags. Is there anything availible longer than the alienheads but short enough to clear the bags and deflect the exhaust away from them with out having to space them down like the stock exhaust?

If you're much over 6' you might be better off with the MRA DB screen. I had the kawasaki (made by MRA) spoiler screen and it wasn't quite high enough to stop the wind hitting my helmet which meant I was having to ride in a slight crouch on long fast runs.

I would never put an alien head exhaust on a street bike.

If I was running the Texas Mile with a super-rich map, I might, for the weight loss.

For the street, especially 2-up, you want the quietest exhaust system you can get.

Trust me, your girl might like to go fast, she doesn't like loud pipes blowing her ear drums out.

Ok so while we discuss the exhaust issues, the bike was ordered today from the local shop and my girlfriend put the downpayment on it to hold it till i get home. To make those of you in the States feel better about the cost of vehicles, my negotiated cash price delivered for a 2013 Midnight Saphirre Blue ZX-14r with 5 liters of gasoline and a rinkydink plasic helmet was $19500 USD. The PI has very restrictive guidlines on vehicles as far as engine size, location of manufacture, location of import etc. Imorting a new vehicle from the States for example is 100% of sticker price plus duties and processing fees.

I also ordered the first batch of add ons as as much as I try to leave well enough alone I always have to tinker. So first batch of parts ordered from Wild Hare Acessories below. If you couldn't tell I'm kinda OCD about stuff matching lol. Both Irfan and his wife seem to be very nice people, and handled a difficult transaction proptly and proffesionaly. I'll let you know how the rest of the transaction goes. For anyone interested in getting GSG parts from them there is a 4-5 week wait for import from Germany. Hense spare parts for the sliders so i'm not out of commision if I have an oops.

Privateer, your probably right. I've been spoiled on the 650r with the side exit exhaust under the chassis, just not that big a deal. I really want to keep the exhaust on the shorter side and away from the luggage.

It won't hurt the luggage one bit. If you see pictures of my 2008 around (I reposted last night to show someone vinyl decals from Immortal Graphix) you see that my Brock's Performance CT-Duals were right underneath my V35 Givi side cases. I think I had about 3/8" clearance.

Never hurt them a bit, didn't even heat up the insides.

If you need more clearance, you just fab a short strap, hole on each end, to lower the muffler can a little.

Right now the COG folks are doing a group buy on a new slip-on maker's C14 mufflers, and they even provide the strap because they pre-fitted on a C14 and know its needed.

And the longer the muffler can is, the more your girl will enjoy the ride, because it will move the db to the back of the bike, behind her.

Besides, the longer exhaust systems like the CT-Duals and the Muzzy duals make the most horsepower and torque of all of them. CT-Duals put an Alien Head to shame on anything but a full-boat race bike (top speed or drag) with engine mods.

My buddy has Muzzy M10 shorty pipe and it's louder to ride than it is to follow. When you're in the pilot's perch, it sounds like the muffler is stuck right up in your helmet. He did some roll-ons with a similarly equipped (flies out, PC, stock gearing and 4-into-1 pipe) '09 last year and the '09 smoked him with the longer pipe.

6'5'' here and I love mine. I'am able to ride in colder weather as the cold wind don't hit me in the chest and throat area anymore. I had a puig, then a Zero Gravity DB, the MRA is the way to go. It's is also really quiet at high speed.

Ok been looking at the exhaust alot and thnking (scary thing that) and while I like the voodoo alot, I think it would get old real quick, and I would burn the sh*t out of myself on the alienheads. I'm digging the Muzzy M4 Retro Drag Dual slip-ons.

From what I've been reading a PC shouldn't be required, they sound good and look good. Price is right too just under $600 bucks. The $64000 question is will they need to be shimmed down away from the luggage or are they low enough and short enough to clear? Any idea guys?

Found some picks of an 06 with the M4 setup.

Plenty of room on the 06 it looks like, how much higher do the pipes sit on the 12-13 models, or is it just the stock pipes are larger?

I am curious why we change the exhaust systems on these. Seriously!

I am not one to talk either, on my 2008 I purchased a set of CT-Duals from Brock's Performance. Super sick exhaust, titanium, duals, hold the whole thing in the palm of one hand and feel almost no weight. Had it drop shipped to Classic Coatings for 3,000 degree gray ceramic outside, and Race Coat on the inside.

So I understand sometimes we just have to have something to have something.

But what I learned with my CT-Duals is the loudness isn't worth what you lose.... if you value quiet so you can actually enjoy the ride.

I've left my Connie stock. I hate the way the potato-launcher muffler looks, but until I find a slip on that is JUST as quiet, it is staying.

The kind of long distance riding I do, that loud pipe droning would drive me bonkers. Plus it makes my XM stereo harder to hear inside my helmet, and it makes bike-to-bike comms harder to understand.

And the thing is, my 2008 ZX14 easily dynoed 200+ HP and still it wasn't any more fun to ride than a bone stock 2008. The changes I made to go 2-line ss front brake hoses, and respring the forks, and so forth, all that made it more fun to ride. But not the louder exhaust.
