My new (to me) track bike
09/06/11 4:22 PM

Picked up this 2007 CBR600RR and put a new fairing on it:

Spent yesterday at Miller Motorsports Park on the full track (4.5 miles). Had a blast!

This thing is FAST! -bg

Looking to do my first trackday on my R6, Still a month away but I'm so excited like a kid on Christmas eve. Got any pointers for a newbie to the track day scene?

Hi, Bean.

Yeah, I've been piecing things together a bit to save money. I got the leathers for a very good price, slightly used, and haven't been too concerned about what's on them.

Hope you're healing quickly. Take care... -bg

Sure do. Click here. Best advice is to take it real easy at first. Learn the racing line. Then gradually increase speeds.

The more I get into this, the more I realize that I had no idea what a motorcycle can really do, in terms of braking and cornering. It's amazing...

The R6 is a great track bike, I hear. What track are you riding?

Have fun! -bg

Listen to the old man. You have to crawl and all that.
Learn the racing line.
Thus, the plant of the vid kills two birds.

Then gradually increase speeds.
She'it'inn'me'pants, Good Luck! No more steps to be had.

[The more I get into this... Yeah?] The more I get into this, the more I realize that I had no idea what a motorcycle can really do
See old man, dishraghere is #2 and Rook; will be on our 14's and give the ol'cornhole'ya doing on that slowshebang?

... in terms of braking and cornering. It's amazing...
Oh Yeah! You come back on the street, you can kiss those fenders goodbye. They are no longer on the diet... Freak'inn mirror meat tastes better well cooked and long gone.

How slow can I go and not blow a line? That is the practice. That is the slow and follow the traffic. You begin the [slow] linear, as the speed is still key to being smooth. Smooth is a straight line. Smooth is take all the road to blend out that line. See how I come back crossing the line not to upset the bike but, to butter smooth blend yourself back into your line. Just don't go there unless there is zero car on the road like nowhere to be seen. I'm just going too slow where you hear the throttle speed up just to slow down.

Kind of like the horse getting out of the start gate. It is now the passing part of the cut to the vid. You do not see, 'head shake' as you "accel the blend." Wide birth is all about being safe. You have no clue what squid is heading into the grassays you broke concentration and followed he/r in.

I'm running hack events. This is just one more vid telling myself what hack I'm in. I am watching every freak'inn think-think. Think I break concentration? Yep. I'm not familiar with that road well enough to hook some hook'inn. I'm old and fluff a line or two on setup entry. I make indecisions... Shit happens fast so you gotta have that instinct running with you.

You need to look at the back of the horizon all the time watching this exercise. You need to straighten out the road like a ribbon coming off the spoolschool. You need to be fluid on the throttle wear earphones so you hear the slow blip for some sort of exhaust pop? No, you want to hear that throttle not go all RookWhackWild.<<< Favorite Pupil [LOL].

BG is on a learning curve. Rook can't wait to get back in it. There may be a blip here and there, but it is a slow shift. You do not want rear wheel chatter. There is more front brake work than combined rear. I am too conditioned for the front to stab the rear, meaning. That should be part of an exercise, but then the struggle to get back to dual brake conditioning, it must be my age.

Bottom line... Apex that line. Spool ribbon that line. Find that line. Fine line it slow and smooth. Smooth gets you up there with the speed being so fluid, you have zip of any kind of chassis upset. Shit, I never left the seating position give me all that kenny crap on a slow road.

Welcome to the track, bgordon. It's an addiction, but sooooo much better than crack! Oh, and much more expensive than crack!

Soon you'll be wondering should you get your race license. Trust me you are never too old, as I turned 40 a few weeks before I entered my first WERA race, and by the end of my first year racing, I earned two regional WERA championships and a bump to the expert class.

I did have a year of track day riding in before I started racing, but just like crack, sooner or later, you'll need a bigger high, and that comes with racing! Hitting the track is the best thing I ever did in life! It is the most exhilarating thing I have ever done.

Yeah, here's a guy we see at Miller once in a while. He has won races in each of the last SIX DECADES. He is incredibly fast...

I dunno. We'll see. I'm taking the 2-day Yamaha Champions Riding School at the end of this month.

Next goal is to see if I can get into the "A" group at track days. -bg

Yeah, Bruce was a hard core 2-stroke boy. A few faces in those photos and names in the Q&A sound familiar. I'd like to old-man-race these old fuckers. She if I still have WOTit takes withe manboobs tank tucked.

Outdaway graybeard!

Still is.

Pick a race date at Miller and I'll meet you there with a honkin' fast bike you can ride. -bg

I divorced my wife and am keeping the 08 CBR600RR for a track bike.

I hate to see you wait, blue. Reason being as soon as you try it, you'll wish you had started doing it years ago (in my case, 50 years ago!)...

There are 2 track days left at Miller this year: 9/30 and 10/15.

Come on down. I'd love to ride with ya... -bg

Yes, the CBR600RR is an AWESOME track bike.

The fairings are Armour Bodies. I got them here but I think Woodcraft sells them as well. I got the "signature series" They were about $1,000 and another $1,000 to paint. -bg
