GASP !!!
09/03/24 3:18 PM

So, a friend of mine had his 08 quit as he was getting on the freeway. Upon inspection, cam chain had jumped and caused massive damage to the head. He pulled the cam chain tensioner and the plunger had fallen out of the body. On the stock tensioner, the plunger is held in by two, very thin, weak wire clips. After seeing that I immediately installed an APE manual tensioner in my 06. So far it's running good. Fingers crossed.

It's been a very long time since I removed the CCT. I remember the wire clips. I ran an APE tensioner for ten years and it never gave me a single problem. It also never needed to be adjusted after the installation. I ran that bike hard almost every ride. I hit the rev limiter a few times and did plenty of wheelies. Looking at the differences between the APE tensioner and the stocker, the APE seems much safer. If you adjusted it to where the chain is silent, it's gotta be keeping constant tension. The stocker lets the chain go slack when you back off the throttle and that's where it could jump timing on you if you're running the engine hard.
