New seat
06/27/13 3:27 PM

Dude on another forum gave me a 2nd Look seat cover he didn't use for helping him save his brake rotors and smithsperformance on here sold me a tatty stock seat which I cut down and re-shaped. Took them to a pro upholsterer and had the cover stretched and fitted. Here's the result:

The blue's not a perfect match (would probably be closer to '06 Candy thunder Blue), but for $70 invested, I'm not complaining. Now I can sell the C-14 Lo-Gel seat I've been running for a while.

Not bad. Even though I cut 3/4" off the thickest part of the pad, there's plenty left that I don't bottom out on the base. And now, it's nice and flat and roomy-just what a motorcycle seat should be. I took the bumstop back about 3/4", too, for more front-to-back room.

Now if I can only find a stock grab strap.

I don't have one...otherwise....sorry.Used to have several here...went through the seat rebuild phase myself a few years back...yours turned out really well...and those mods on the bumpers...yup...that helps as well. You got it;)Had one seat,a connie, shaved down so I only had like an inch maybe of foam on there...made you feel like you were sitting IN the bike...very cool actually.lowered it quite nicely as well.It didn't do too bad on the bumps and all...stayed pretty soft actually. That Connie foam is very good stuff. It definitely changed the feel of the frontend sitting lower like that...curves...all that really did feel quite cool...

This new 14R seat is a very good redesign. They did very well on it.I can't feel anything that I'd want different on it...they did what you did...opened the bucket some and reshaped the thigh areas....nice.

A couple of other pals who have purchased new 14Rs have said the same thing. If this keeps up, Corbin, Sargent, Bill Mayer and the lot will be out of business! Haha! My upholsterer smiles every time someone brings in motorcycle seat work. He says he'll never starve as long as the factories continue to make crappy seats.

I would like to know, if possible, if you ever had a passenger rate that seat and what sort of comfort level they related.
Not that it might sway me, since I do alot of riding 2-up, but if it's alot worse than stock for the passenger I might pass, otherwise consider it sold.

Thanks

I never had a passenger on it, so anything would be speculation on my part. I would think, being originally designed for the Concours, a machine much more 2-up oriented than the ZX, I can't imagine it not being better than a stock ZX seat. If you are really interested, I could snap it back on and conscript a passenger to check it out.

Well it seems I could easily re-sell if it isn't, but I doubt it.
PM me payment info, or here, whichever.

Took my 22-yr. old daughter "Princess Pea" (for her similarity to the title character in the fable 'The Princess and The Pea') for a ride on each seat and she pronounced the passenger area of the C-14 seat much softer and more comfortable than the unmodified rear portion of the modified stocker.

PM sent.

Thanks, WM. I wish the color matched better. trying to plot a way to make that happen, perhaps some vinyl upholstery dye or....?

Me thinks it looks pretty razor sharp, close enough don't obsess about the direct match. I though it was a custom hugger when I first saw it. Real cool bro!

After nearly 3 months on order, finally took delivery of the sargent seat and carbon finish rear pod.
Not the best picture but you can make out the wilbers hydraulic preload for the rear suspension.................and the random admirer. It happens a lot and I love it. zx-14r's are not that common here and the custom mods now make it even more special.

Jordan1963,

How well did the green seam on the seat match the color of the paint on your SE?

Same question about the paint on the pod matching the paint on the 14?

I am considering going with the same set up and you have the first one with the same combination I am considering.

How comfortable is the seat?

Thanks, Gary

Hey Gary,
A few photos that may help answer your questions.
The seat is extremely comfortable. I found it to be a bit softer than the standard seat.
The seat keeps your butt from sliding back and forth which was a bit annoying with the original seat.
Can't wait to try it at the track in about 4 weeks time.
The green beading is close but not exact. Perhaps a shade lighter. But that honestly doesn't bother me at all.
Just the fact that the beading is green is what is eye-catching.
I get comments like " man, that seat and pod looks awesome and the green beading really makes it stand out" and not
" man, that seat and pod looks awesome but the green beading doesn't match the rest of your bike".

The pod is a carbon fiber finish. I don't have much carbon fiber on the bike except for the rear hugger and chain guard, and it is a close match.
Hope I have been some help.

Regards
Jordan

Absolutely, I appreciate the information and photos! My bike looks very similar to yours, same exhaust even.

I will probably go with this set up, the question for me is go cf on the rear pod or match the metallic black paint?

Jordan1963, you still liking the seat/pod?

Getting ready to purchase mine, now that I did my taxes and have some play money.

No complaints. Just remember to lift your leg a little higher so you don't hit the pod!
Cheers.

Sweet, I ordered it last week.

I will post pics after install. I went with spark metallic black pod, to match the paint.

I have various bags and/or a solo seat with a hump on my other bikes, so being careful with the leg is a given.
