Clarification on "maps" please
05/14/12 6:16 PM

Having my first fuel injected bike with the mighty 14r, and after reading this site every night for the last two months, I'm confused as ever. I would like to put on a Muzzy or Brocks short pipe system, but do I really need to map it?? It seems everybody on this blog has had trouble with their corresponding maps. Can't I just put a PCV on it, set it to auto and be on my merry way?? Could somebody set me straight before I put out the bucks...Please?

You have to start out with a map in the piggy, even if its just a "zero" map that doesn't alter the A/F table at all.

There are some folks who start with a zero map, and buy the Autotune module, and let it develop the A/F values best suited for altitude and operation, and then you have a tuned map. Arguably better than dynotuning since its based on realworld operation. But you have to have some degree to tuning skillz to do it right.

Also, if you buy, for instance, a Brock's Performance exhaust system, he will give you a pretty good map. His first generation 14R map sucked, but its a lot better now. If you run Autotune on top of Brock's map, it probably won't develop significantly different cell values.

A PC is just an empty vessel. No AFR values at all. IDK what would happen if you tried to run the bike with an unloaded PC.

There is no AUTO setting. You can use AutoTune or Wideband2 but those PC accessories take a bit of time to "learn" what your bike's requirements are. The self tuners do not automatically change your map. You need to hook the bike up to your computer to use Dynojet software to accept the fuel trims that the tuner suggests.

But you have to have some degree to tuning skillz to do it right.

As I am finding out. I had good luck with mine just accepting trims after the AT-200 sat in learning mode for a month. Perhaps it could be even better if I took trhe time to understand how the system works. (on the list of things to do)

Slipons seemed to be okay on stock mapping on the gen1 zx-14. Maybe they are fine with the 14r. Personally, I would not take the chance on a brand new first gen bike. Play it safe.

A set of slipons is fine if you can get them very cheap. You may well want to change over to a 4-2-1. I ALWAYS recommend a full system exhaust and for that, I would only use a PC and good map or custom tune.

I had Brocks maps but I wanted a custom tune. After I got it done I was very happy.Especially 4-6 grand on the highway.I still haven't got it up in the higher range to see what the top end is.I did have it at 150 in 6th.

Thanks everybody for the info. I think I'm leaning towards a Brock's system over the Muzzy. What does a "custom tune" consist of? Is that where the bike is on a dyno and they tweak it at every gear through a pc?

Ok, lets say you buy a Brock's Performance exhaust system and a piggy at the same time.

So Brock sends you a piggy with the map already installed. And it will run pretty darn good, over 200 hp no problem.

So then you either a) take it to a dyno and get them to tweak the map based on a bunch of dyno runs, or b) buy Autotune and do it yourself after going riding for a couple hours the way you most like to ride.

Well, or option c) do (b) first and then (a) and have the best of both worlds.

If you run Autotune, put a switch on your dash where you can turn Autotune off. So you get the map in the piggy custom tweaked off the dyno, and then you ride it a while and see what Autotune says. You can configure it to run the piggy map with Autotune applied, then turn Autotune off and it goes back to just the map in the piggy.

A lot of Concours 14 guys are putting zero maps on their piggies and so they can run the bike "stock" or "tuned" based on the on/off Autotune switch.

Or ..... you buy the exhaust, and take it and the bike to Don Guhl, and get him to dyno you and then re-flash your ECU, and you got a) custom map now in ECU, b) other improvements like speed limit off, rev limited bumped up a little, changes to default settings as requested.

Thats what I'm going to do, just skip the piggy completely.

what happened to the old days when you put on a pipe, adjusted the jets and off you went. Thanks Privateer. I think I got it figured out now. Come July we'll see what happens.

Well if your running a 14R and want a custom map for the Brock's CT PM me. I have one. Map was made on the PCV then uploaded into the ECU... No more PCV needed for me ;-)
