What size BST wheels for Bonneville
03/27/12 4:53 PM

I am wondering what size wheels one would use for land speed racing? I want to order some BST wheels but the come in 6" 6.25" or 6.625". I ave ar that 6" is narrower and has less rag at high speeds and have also heard that the 6.62" has more traction and is better. I want this for road application as well. Will the 6" wheels work fine or do I need to get wider (more expensive) wheels.

Thanks

Why not try it all three. What makes you feel better and best fits you :) It's better to have it test ride.

What's a rear BST cost? ~$2400? You have to get it right the first time on this one. There must be some very specific wheel info that pertains to LSR. Sorry I can't offer any precise info but seems to me the thinnest would be best because it will be the lightest. Also, they make 16" diameter wheels for track racing which are lighter than 17" street legal wheels. Then you need to buy non street legal race tires to fit it.

FWIW, I would think the stock width (6.5" I believe) 17" height would be best all around choice if you are using this as a street bike as well as a race bike. I would be very curious to hear what the weight of your BST are. Carrazeria TriR is a lot cheaper but it comes close to the weight

from my TriR thread

From Shane's post at my BL thread, looks to me like the Tri-Rs are about 1 lb heavier (by my estimation) than BSTs.

BST's are all about the weight. So, let's see what they weigh:
Front, with spacers:
6 lbs. 1 oz.

Add 4-5 for rotors you got 10-11 lbs full weight front BST
Tri-R, 12 lb, 6 oz

Total rear, with sprocket carrier: 11 lbs. 1 oz.
BST is 11 lb, 1 oz
I have 12 lb, 6 oz

For speed runs, the mass of the tire at the outer rim becomes huge, due to forces from rotation. Heat is a factor as well.

When Burt Munro ran his rat bike Indian 200+ mph at Bonneville, he hand shaved the tread off to combat these problems. You can probably buy tires made to purpose these days, I bet they cost a pretty penny.

If you are only going to 200ish mph then narrow rims with high rated tires will be fine. Much faster and BSTs won't be safe enough, you will need to go to forged magnesium.

just ask Brocks, "he" did it with the 14. He told me the heavier front one they have on their website is to control wheeling. They BST should be safe for a 200 mph run!

More like $3500 when it's all said and done!

I got the standard 6",so getting tires is not an issue,The wider rim I think is for drag racing, not LSR,contact Brock to be sure
