Brakes!!!!!
09/10/13 10:15 AM

Ok the stock brakes on my 2013 stuck, we all know that this beast will get up and go well I need something to stop this bad boy. Someone let me know what's the next best pad out there for some real stopping power thanks

Hmm...well...they are ABS.They will only 'stop' at a certain degree before the ABS kicks in.A harder grabbing brake would only activate the ABS 'quicker'...as in 'locking up' sooner. That's what you're wanting?Mine have never locked up...meaning..the ABS prevents it while a normal brake would start skidding. She stops very quickly(on mine).Much quicker than a non ABS.You DO have ABS,right?

"Ok the stock brakes on my 2013 stuck"

They stuck? Did you mean they suck? I still have the stock pads and I haven't had a problem with my brakes sticking or sucking... I do have EBC pads on my honda and they were a nice improvement over stock.

The brakes are great. The bike is just a lot heavier than most other sportbikes. The Gen1 will lock the front without coming close to pulling the lever all the way to the grip. That sucker os so hard, I doubt it can go all the way to the grip without bending or breaking off the lever.

I can lock up the front or rear. How hard does your front end dive? Tires?

Yea its ABS, I was just thinking if I bought some new EBC pads would they work better than the stock ones providing a better stopping power or about the same. And also less braking noise? I'm just not use to abs that's why I said they suck. When you go from a 08 gsxr 600 to this bike it's like upgrading from a Buick to a Cadillac. I'm gonna trying messing with the ABS tomorrow and see how much that helps

EBC's are good pads...probably wouldn't stop her any quicker however...the new ABS models have a new different pad in there...to compliment the ABS function.I think they're about the best you could get for the 2013 Ninja.Once that ABS kicks in...it will only stop you as per abs.Pads won't make any difference.(if that makes any sense).A lockup is a lockup...regardless of pad.(I could be wrong about this...so my thoughts are not written in stone;).

A good set of EBC HH pads and grippy tires will help your bike exploit it's maximum braking potential!! It will definitely stop more firmly and in a shorter distance with a brake pad and tire grip upgrade. Unless the tires have been already replaced from stock. Firm smooth application of braking force at the lever with three fingers should haul you down in a HURRY! :) keep your weight planted on the balls of ur feet and the saddle, grip tightly with knees, gear down hard and clutch out firmly while smashing three fingers down hard and applying rear brake pressure till she starts to wag her tail when you downshift from weight transfer. U will be stopping NOW. I don't have ABS but on Priscilla I can get her wagging her tail and both tires are howling. It's freakin fun as heck!!

Grn is correct! Lock up is lock up, so the way to better braking requires a two pronged attack of grip AND brake pad friction improvement.
The last piece of the pie would be 'modulation' or 'feel', some prefer the stiff unforgiving 'feel' of the stainless braided brake line. I like the stock lines a lot. They look very neatly set in, are already black, and I think give terrific feel. And excellent feedback with that pulsey pushback feel you get from good systems at the limit. I will eventually do some braking upgrades. but im thinkin there should be a carbon ceramic rotor upgrade for Priscilla!? Ie: less unsprung weight and with the proper pad, fast heat up and consistent performance on the street. They are by no means cheap however. But the best never is. :)) just my 2c.

I run Galfer HH pads for my non ABS 2012 model, better than the OEM pads but not a hugh difference. This is interesting as I am far from happy with the brakes on my bike. I have replaced the master cylinder with Brembo RCS19 which made a big improvement but still unsatisfied. I will order Galfer Rotos next and install braided lines which should make the difference, if not then I'll have to upgrade the calipers.

One thing I don't understand...is...all the mags and reviews praise the 14R for improved braking...yet there are some(here)that are saying they don't particularly care for the braking action.Personally...I don't see how it could get any better with her stock brakes...especially ABS systemed brakes. What are guys trying to get with this bike?I don't ask that mockingly...but I am curious just how a guy wants his brakes to act....you're stopping a 580+machine at probably triple digits...what do you really expect it to do?It can only decel so fast before it locks and skids....(without ABS)I honestly can't imagine my 2013 ABS stopping any faster or more securely than how it does now...it's incredible how good she stops. You aren't gonna want a lockup at turn approach...or entry...I don't get it.

You're much safer with an ABS machine IMO rather than attempting to haul this heavy bike down with the continuous 'start' of lockup/skid going on."better' pads and such will only create a more iffy situation won't it?My 07 could NEVER stopp as quick and safe as my 2012 and 2013 ABS.Even the 2012 had problems skidding. As with every zx14 I had.The 2013 has vastly made the stopping game MUCH safer and faster. It will NOT skid....at all.Full braking or not.At lower speeds...she hauls down so fast and straight...it's very good.A non abs bike would have trouble staying planted.

I totally agree with Grn14 on this one, there is only so much adhesion to be had.
I have seen a small improvement in feel since I installed my Hel braded lines, but nowhere as much as previous bikes that I have done this to. I guess it is a lot to do with feel & confidence, but these brakes are some of the best in the business imo.

RE: Brakes!!!!!

The lever feel on my bike is completely predictable and without drama.I have yet to lock the front ABS controlled wheel.I've tried...hauling her down with full lever and full rear brake.I can feel the rear doing the ABS deal...the front...not yet...she stops so fast that there isn't time I guess for the front to need to be ABS'd.It's a great feeling knowing she's not gonna skid out and come around on ya...no matter how hard ya apply the binders. No non-abs 14 could do this....no way...my 07 and my 2012....you had to be really cautious when applying with force the brakes.EBC's in both....HH sintered. You were at the mercy of the road conditions and stopping length.Had a couple close calls trying to stop quickly with those previous bikes.Just very heavy and hard to get stopped in an emergency.Even with those fine brake pads.

It's actually kinda hard to get used to the stopping ability of these abs systems on the 14R.You don't expect her to haul down and stay straight and all....but she does. Not a wiggle or anything.Lower speeds...you stop.I mean...right now with full application.Pull in the clutch...start downshifting...full brake....very safe.IN THE WET AS WELL.

IDK what kind of 'feel' a guy would want that'd be better than how the new ABS bikes are...I can't imagine pads and lines could possibly make her any better. You can only stop so fast...safely.I've got now right at around 9K on these brake rotors...had some hard braking fun with em...high temps as well during the braking action....the rotors feel perfect...not a trace of any warping or juddering.Nothing.And they've gotten VERY hot at times.I totally trust this system...and before...I couldn't see how ABS was something anyone would want.

I don't think pads and lines will make this bike perform any better.I don't understand really why a guy would want a more agressive braking system on a non-abs zx14,14R...seems to me the chances of locking up would be very easy in an emergency...it was so with my previous bikes. Not good.

If you're rolling hard in triple digits...the bike is flyin...all that momentum going on...trying to stop quickly with brakes that you have to seriously be careful of locking up while slowing is very hard to do.To find that limit while trying to avoid a wreck...nah....I wouldn't want the 'fastest, most grippy' brakes on MY 14.No way.Trying to keep the brakes from locking at speed in an emergency...nope....too dangerous.Get it wrong...yer done.Just my opinion here. It'd be good to hear some opposing views on this....or whatever.

I'd say...rather than get the 'top of the line' brake pads and calipers...go the other way...get the ABS system instead...it IS available. The bike is already factory prepped to install it.There may even be a 'switch' inside that ecu on the non-abs bikes that could be enabled to run the abs on there....the 2012's had it...just not in the US.

kawi1400 as a former owner of a 04 Hayabusa with EBC HH pads & EBC brake lines frt & rr that was noticeable improvement over the oem busa setup. Now to my current bike a 09 zx14 with the stock setup I would have to say the braking performance was on par with the busa. Well I have totaled replaced my 14's braking system with Galfer's, rotor's, brake lines & EBC HH pads... and to be honest the Oem feels way better then my Galfer setup. I had the bike checked out on three different occasions at three different shops and they found nothing wrong mechanical wise with my brakes. So the moral of this story is, You just don't REALLY realize how good your brakes actually are until you throw a lot money at it, Like I did. If I had to do it all over...I wouldn't do it for the braking performance, but more for the looks! lol. Just my 2cents.

I purchased everything separately for both bikes. The galfer setup was expensive, over a grand with labor.
