Need a radar detector ASAP
08/28/09 10:41 AM

Long story short, i bet a friend i could make it home from work in ten minutes. The first run i didnt have any problems made it home with time to spare. It started to become a habit and that was my routine for about a week. I cruised at about 114- 120, opened all the way up to 190 on the long straight aways. Before yall give me the ugly face, yeah i was asking for trouble or worse. But the damn bike handles like a f'ing dream and i dont think i hit more that 9k rpms, riding that fast its tunnel vision all the way so dont quote me on that one. Anyways... I passed a 18 wheeler and didnt see the cop on the other side. But he saw me and followed. I slowed down when i hit traffic further up the road. Thats when i first saw the cop and he lit me up with the lights, and i pulled over. Ticket # one. Again, getting off work and nothing on the road but 18 wheelers. After the first ticket didnt push my bike past 60 even on the interstate for 3 days. I obeyed the the traffic laws right up to that long straight away. There was nothing in front of me but one 18 wheeler and a one car. Car turned out to be unmarked statey. Makes you miss the days when all cops had those ten gallon size lights on top of their cars, you could spot them a mile away. When he caught up with me he commented on how well i handled the bike...the fugger, and gave me an option a ticket or jail. I rode home that night!
You can say i was scared straight, havent sped since. i dont even get on the interstate on my way home from work. It's gotten so bad little old ladies are passing me and i've come to the realization no one drives the speed limit.I dont plan on riding that fast outside of being on someones track but i want that feeling back of knowing im riding a beast. Even if i never truly unleash her.
I need a Radar Dectector. Looking for one online is a joke. All the sites claim theirs is the best but as you read about their specs they dont have this or dont have that. Or they cost more than six months of bank payments. Do you all have any suggestions on good detectors? The one stipulation i have is that i work the air force base and i need to be able to remove it before i enter the base.
Thanx in advance
TT

Thank you for the great article, Scott. If the thing really works, it would be worth the price.

ttate508, nobody does 190 on a regular basis. From polls taken here and on the old forum, I believe there are very few of us who ever do 190. A lot of owners haven't done 150. I think you'd go a long way toward avoiding tickets by scouting the area first - at least the stretch of road where you plan to do your felonious riding. If you maintain that kind of speed for miles I am afraid something very bad will happen to you one of these times and it might be a lot worse than a ticket. You got the balls of steal award. You have to limit these excursions or you are up against some tough odds. Nobody beats the odds for ever. You are a lot less likely to NOT receive a good scare at those speeds.

How the heck do you have any points left after getting a ticket for 125 miles over the posted limit, anyway? Oh, dumb question.

As far as the points on my license, i will find out next month whether i need to buy a ten speed or not after my court appearance.
I checked out the web site for the pass port. It looked great but again, its a sponsored web site. I was looking for first hand experience.

I paid my ticket today...the cop only gave me the 25mph over the speed limit. Came to $153.00. I was saving all my dimes and nickles thinking it would be four maybe five hundred. Now i can buy some new pipes for my bike. While i have you let me ask, do you have to get a power commander when you change you pipes?
Been driving my truck for the last few days. Have to unwrap my lady and ride out this weekend.

LOL You are my kind of guy, Tate! Get an unexpected break on a penalty for riding too fast, take the money and spend it on something to go faster. Oh well, what's life if you can't splurge once in a while? But do be careful and really, I would seriously think about limitimg your high speed runs a bit. Dangerous situations happen no matter what speed you are going to ride but just think how much more likely they are to result in an accident at higher speed. You need to find the ideal conditions to run at top speed and just do it at that time. OK- done preaching.

I would take a look in the Accessories forum for a topic about radar detectors/jammers. Start up a new thread there and you might get a lot more replies. There probably are a lot of members who do not check the Newbs forum regularily. Radar detectors have always been a hot topic so there should be a lot of opinions and info on them.

You do not need a PC when you change pipes but it will improve performance and protect you from running too lean with the increased flow of the pipe. I've heard the stock fuel/air is pretty rich across the powerband on the 08-09 so running lean is not much of a risk. If you have the 06-07, I would recommend the PC because they are leaner running at low rpm. Slipons should be safer to run without a PC than a full system.

I run a PC with stock pipes and it made a nice improvement in performance. I think the PC is a good first mod but I know the pipes are a little more exciting.

don't speed on the interstate. thats where the cops stay. thats easy for me to say here... i don't know where you live, but i tell all my riders locally, if your going to do something dumb, do it where there are fewer people, less traffic, and ultimatly, less surveillance. hopefully, if something bad does happen, it lessens the chances of other people being involved. and try to keep it to roads without intersections.... fewer surprises that way.

i have not needed a detector, KNOCK ON WOOD, for the better part of 17 years. and having one, i think, gives you a false sense of security. the ONE time i used one to get the 1700 miles from here to Austin(family emergency) i was pulled over when the guy paced me. i was not paying enough attention because of it.

not that i condone this kind of riding, but i know we all do it. ;0)

when in doubt, slow down. no one ever hit something by going too slow.

Hi ttate508

on my 08 ZX 14 SE I use a Valentine One Radar/Laser detector. I have it mounted on a Saeng mount attached to the throtle/switch gear housing, with an extended arm that locates the detector out above my throttle hand, so it can "see" both to the front and to the rear. I also use the remote accesories to move the indicator lights and the alarm sound to right in front of me on the underside of the lip of the windscreen.

http://www.valentine1.com/

the Valentine One typically tops all the other detectors by a wide margin in the independant tests done by various car magazines, very nice unit, works very well, the only one that also senses to the rear, but not the cheapest on the planet......

on the Saeng mount, the detector is atached by Velcro and a rubber safety tension strap. Takes seconds to unplug the detector and pop it off and stick it in a pocket.

if you intend to expose yourself to police observation on public roads at anywhere near the speeds you mentioned, you probably actually need a "plate flipper", http://www.plateflipper.com/ and just stay on the throttle as you vanish into the distance......

FYI radar that are installed in most patrol cars can tell if you have a Jammer.... it gives you an alert.... so if you live in a state or province where they are illegal you could be ticketed for that and have your car towed and inspected and they will find it.... technically it could be looked at as obstructing a peace officer.... and scott was right if you are travelling at high speed the copper is gonna get ya locked before your detector goes off.... and also fyi most highway cars have front and rear radar that are capable of doing both directions with a push of a button so if you come flying up the arse he'll get ya.... don't get me wrong radar detectors DO work to an extent, if you are investing a lot of money DO NOT BUY one that claims to be a LASER detector as well cause the laser would have to be pointed right at the unit for it to be detected.... hint hint thats not where you aim it on a bike(or a car) has to be a somewhat flat solid surface!!!! last time I checked most of those units are in the windshield area, and the aim wud be at the chest or somewhere on the front so if you do get a warn on your detector the copper has already gotten 3 or 4 or more readings as they give readins within nano seconds.... be weary all traffic cops are trained to estimate speed as well so if he can't get ya on the radar he can estimate your speed compared to his speed or other vehs on the road, pull you over and if you have a detector you get dinged for that.... Oh and you want to buy a RADAR detector with 360 coverage cause the like i sed the cars have forward facing and rearward facing radars and are capable of reading vehicle coming towards you and going away from you both directions.... pretty slick from the old radar..... there have been several people that had $400 detectors that have been blessed with a nice yellow gift.... DON"T WASTE YOU MONEY ON A RADAR/LASER DETECTOR, GO WITH A STRAIGHT RADAR DETECTOR..... good luck!!
